IOMMI Says Original BLACK SABBATH Members Rehearsed At OZZY's House Earlier This Year - Nov. 7, 2011
Legendary guitarist Tony Iommi told Billboard.com that he and fellow original BLACK SABBATH members Ozzy Osbourne, Geezer Butler and Bill Ward assembled earlier this year at Osbourne's home in California to play some music "for a bit of fun, and to see if we could all play. It was good, but it was just purely, 'Let's have a go and see what happens.'" Iommi said the group planned to get together again "very soon...to discuss things and see what's going to happen and see what we're going to do. It's all in the air at the moment, but it'd be nice to think we can actually do something."

Iommi did not give any hints about the press conference the group is holding in Los Angeles, but said, "We're talking. We've always been talking, to be honest. We've always been in touch with each other. There might be a lawsuit in-between us, but we still talk to each other like nothing's happened."

All four original BLACK SABBATH members will reunite for a press conference on November 11 at the Whisky A Go Go in Hollywood, California — the same venue where the band made its Los Angeles debut on November 11, 1970 (41 years ago), opening for ALICE COOPER — at exactly 11:11 a.m. They are widely expected to announce that they have begun writing material for a new album in addition to preparing to play their first live shows since the summer of 2005.

Guns N’ Roses with Buckcherry Live at Philips Arena in Atlanta 11-2-11: Interview with Ron “Bumblefoot” Thal
by ellen on November 4, 2011

I begged my mom to buy me the controversial cassette tape Appetite for Destruction; the one my best friend’s parents refused to buy for her. I didn’t know what the big deal was when I was a mere fifth grader, but I wanted in! I remember LOVING the song “Mr. Brownstone” and singing it on the blacktop during recess. Years later I discovered its meaning – the spiral of heroin addiction. Guns N’ Roses solidified in my personality my love for heavy, button-pushing music. I enjoyed a wee bit of the hair metal by bands like Poison and even excited myself with a love affair with Warrant’s Dirty Rotten Filthy Stinking Rich.

I liked the thrill of listening to edgy themes of sex drugs and rock ‘n roll. The ideas played out like a fantasy, and only in adulthood while watching bands like Buckcherry announce to the Philips Arena crowd on November 2, “A crazy bitch is the kind of girl you’re fucking for 2 weeks and hallucinating thinking you’re in love when your friends say ‘you’re just fucked up on GHB and she fucks good – have some fun’. But you decide to bring her to meet your parents for Thanksgiving dinner and she shows up in a sundress with no bra and no panties. You say, ‘these are my fucking parents; it’s the holidays’ and she says ‘don’t be so uptight.’ Then, after dinner you take her to a local bar to blow off steam and your 16-year-old brother texts in repeatedly saying he needs to talk. When you ask him what’s up he says, ‘your girlfriend blew me in the bathroom before you left.’ And the crazy bitch says, ‘yeah, don’t be so uptight; he looked like he needed it.’” Sex, drugs, and Rock ‘n’ Roll still have their place with fun-loving bands like Buckcherry, but no one should take away the deep sentiments and emotional connections in some of the solos and heart-ripping lyrics put out by Guns N’ Roses.

Looking over the discography for Guns N’ Roses, it pales in comparison to Megadeth – a band that just released its 13th  full-length. Axl Rose fought to stay controversial; whether or not his work suffered for it I won’t say, but I will acknowledge my love for Guns that began with my very first tape and continued through every single release. I went through my formative years with the Use Your Illusion releases. I screamed along with “14 Years” thinking the song was written for my 14th  birthday! Again, only years later did I learn the song told the story of the relationship between friends and band mates Izzy Stradlin and Axl Rose.  But in examining the songs on each album from Appetite for Destrustion to Chinese Democracy one can’t help but give Rose his due –even if it took more than 20 years to get a chance to see them live.

Rose seemed in an uncharacteristic good mood at Philips Arena in Atlanta. He poked fun at being arrested last time he played Atlanta – when he jumped off stage and landed in a local holding cell too arrogant to say anything but “Fuck You” to those who would release him. The band walked onstage to the theme song for “Dexter,” and opened with “Chinese Democracy.” Toying with the opening riff, “Welcome to the Jungle” came next; appropriate for Rose’s return to Atlanta.

Each member took a solo break as Rose introduced those who believe in the passion of the project though none of them were there for that first release. If you missed the Philips Arena show Nov. 2, you missed a rare opportunity to see Guns N’ Roses play some of its timeless tunes including “Estranged,” “Don’t Cry,” “Mr. Brownstone,” “It’s So Easy,” and “Better,” “Sorry,” and “This I Love” off Chinese Democracy. You missed Rose’s piano tribute to Pink Floyd’s “Another Brick in the Wall,” that moved into a beautifully haunting rendition of “November Rain.” You missed Bumblefoot toying with the “Pink Panther Theme” for his solo and Tommy Stinson’s performance of “My Generation” where he sang. If you didn’t make your way out on Wednesday, you missed the constantly burning cigarette on DJ Ashba’s guitar. These are images you can find in pictures and recollections you can extract from low-quality YouTube bootlegs, but I’m glad I finally got to see the fun holding on to the guns brought to make life roses (I’m loosely quoting “Breakdown” here).

Guitarist Ron “Bumblefoot” Thal took the time to speak with me after the Atlanta show. He opened up about the extent of his recent injuries, and showed me that his May 31 car accident took a much larger toll than he originally thought. Thal also commented on his work producing Poc, an artist who opened for Guns in Mexico. The fact that Bumblefoot has overcome an earthquake, heat wave, the flooding of his studio from Hurricane Irene, and a potentially fatal car crash before embarking on a worldwide tour with Guns N Roses testifies to his honor and passion as an artist.

Those who are not familiar with the solo projects of Bumblefoot should check out his recent releases  – he even includes “player” and “producer” packs for his fans. He says, “I know my fans. I included the things I often wished I could get with a CD or song.”

The Secret to Getting the Singer Gig With Velvet Revolver

Duff McKagan
The Secret to Getting the Singer Gig With Velvet Revolver (Or Any Band, For That Matter)
By Duff McKagan Thu., Nov. 3 2011 at 6:30 AM

At this moment in time, I am absolutely balls to the wall, with touring with Loaded, as well as doing a book tour over here in the UK.

Typical day: Wake up in bus on ferry being tossed violently in Irish Sea. Get out of bunk to find that the bus power is off. That means? No coffee. No internet. No light, and NO going above decks as the door going upstairs are locked during the voyage.
Arrive at dock in Belfast, where car from U.K. publishing company is waiting to take me to HMV store for book signing (still no coffee). LOTS of people there. I get coffee.

Then to sound check, where we run through stuff that needs a running through. Eat. Can't forget to do THAT!

Call home.

Play rock show, and do meet and great type of thingy afterwards. Go to sleep.

Repeat all of this for next 9 straight days.

Day off (well, this "day off," actually turned into a flight to Santiago, Chile from London).

Repeat above steps for following 10 days.

Day off (THIS "day off' is a flight back to Germany from Sau Paulo, Brazil)

Tour with Motorhead in Germany for remainder of November.

My point to all of this is that, well, I get a lot of questions from singers wanting to know how to get the singer gig in my other band, Velvet Revolver, and I wanted all the aspiring frontmen and women to know how glamorous it is out here. Speaking of questions. I think I'll answer this one directly.

Hey, Duff.
How can an unknown (me) orchestrate the "chance of a lifetime" opportunity to tryout for VR?
Cheers,
Lee

Hi, Lee:

We don't actually play "orchestra" music in Velvet Revolver. It is classified in the "rock n' roll" genre. But that is a good idea. Maybe if we played orchestra music and the like, we wouldn't have to find a singer, eh?

Of course, I am just fuckin' with ya. Send an MP3 to Rick Canny at Sanctuary Music Management. Be resourceful, mate: if you can't find his email address, then maybe you should re-consider trying to join our group. We'd never let you hear the end of THAT!

Iconic frontman Axl Rose and his revamped Guns N’ Roses performed at Philips Arena on Wednesday night. This was the fourth date of the long-awaited tour, and the building was close to half full. Despite the slight turnout, and starting late at 11:00, Rose and his new bandmates were in excellent form. Buckcherry(pictured) and Kelen Heller were the openers.

BLABBERMOUTH.NET
DUFF MCKAGAN Says VELVET REVOLVER Will Audition New Singer In December

Duff told OC Weekly, last month that he "played in New York [in Setember as part of the Road Recovery benefit concert] and Matt Sorum [VELVET REVOLVER/ex-GUNS N' ROSES drummer] was there. There was a singer there [possibly referring to Jimmy Gnecco of OURS. — Ed.] we might write some songs with."

He continued, "None of us have really tried [to find anyone] in the last few years. We've all been busy with other things.

"I think once that whole thing went down with Scott, we thought we'd find a guy right away. Once a few months went by, it was like, 'Oh fuck.'"

He added, "We didn't give up on the band but you can't force a singer into a situation. It's got to just kind of happen. So playing a few weeks ago with that singer, it seemed really natural. So we'll see. I'll come back to you on that."

Jimmy Gnecco of OURS sang lead vocals on three songs ("Slither" by VELVET REVOLVER, "It's So Easy" by GUNS N' ROSES and "Hey Joe" by JIMI HENDRIX) during the Road Recovery concert with Slash, McKagan, Sorum, Gilby Clarke (ex-GUNS N' ROSES) and Dave Kushner (VELVET REVOLVER). Fan-filmed video footage of his performance can be seen below.

VELVET REVOLVER has been more or less on hiatus since its split with Weiland, although it was recently revealed that the group recorded an album's worth of material with STONE SOUR and SLIPKNOT frontman Corey Taylor.

In a recent interview with Brazil's "Lokaos Rock Show", VELVET REVOLVER drummer Matt Sorum said about the band's current status, "After [we parted ways with] Scott Weiland [in 2008]… We had such a great first record, especially. The second album is still a good album, but… It's hard to replace Scott for that particular band, I think.

"When we did VELVET REVOLVER, we wanted to make a modern rock album, and we had to figure out a way to make that work. We didn't wanna be like GUNS N' ROSES. We knew we had that in us anyway, especially the Slash and Duff sound was the initial sound of [GN'R's classic debut album] 'Appetite For Destruction', the way they played together and everything. Part of that chemistry was there, and when we added Scott, it brought it into a more modern rock element. He came more from grunge — the Seattle [sound like] SOUNDGARDEN, PEARL JAM and bands like that. So it took it sort of forward. We became more of a modern rock band and we were on modern rock radio."

Matt Re: fan tweets

Hence similar to drum fills in Don't Cry, NR and Estranged the idea was they were tied together as a trilogy. Axl and I discussed the fills as an idea

True story!RT @chuck_rocks: @mattsorum cool ! Is it true back in the guns days you once took a porsche @ an airport and when the owner stopped you, you just bought it?

Oh yah It is a November Rain. Piece of trivia November Rain and Estranged were originally one complete song, a very long song

Axl first played the finished version of November Rain for me in the parking lot of El Compadre on Sunset Blvd. He had a killer car stereo . Slash n Duff stayed inside drinking

Gary Graff of Billboard.com recently conducted an interview with legendary guitarist Slash (VELVET REVOLVER, GUNS N' ROSES). A couple of excerpts from the chat follow below.

On his next solo album, which is being recorded with the same Myles Kennedy-fronted band he took on tour to promote 2010's "Slash" and with whom he recorded the upcoming live set "Made in Stoke 24/7/11":

Slash: "Based on the relationship that we've developed and the chemistry we've got going, I started writing material with Myles and the guys in the band in mind . . It's very different from the last one. There's a lot of freedom on this record; it's very diverse, but it's definitely the sound of one band with a lot of different ideas. This is probably the most 'live' recorded album I've ever done, too. The way I like to do records is rehearse, rehearse, rehears and then go in and get to know the song like the back of your hand and then go in and bang it out. That's how we're doing it."

On the current status of VELVET REVOLVER, which has been singer-less since parting ways with Scott Weiland in April 2008:

Slash: "[We will get together in December to] spend some time with a couple of singers — that's all I can tell you."

On havings taken ownership of all the music he's played on over the years:

Slash: "I realized that I actually have a catalog at this point. There's a body of work that I can refer to. And I just pulled stuff that I wanted to play, a lot of stuff that I hadn't played in a really long time. Playing 'Nightrain' was a gas; that's something I hadn't done since the mid-90s. I just had this freedom to do whatever I wanted, so it was really fun and there was a lot of material to pull from."

On GUNS N' ROSES' nomination for the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame's class of 2012:

Slash: "It's become very prestigious over the years, and it's become a huge honor for anybody to be inducted into it — or even nominated, for that matter. It's a cool accolade, I suppose. Obviously we're in really, really great company . . . Of course, you have those thoughts of how it might work in case it does happen, but with GUNS 'N ROSES, there's really no guessing exactly how it will go. I suppose if it happens, everybody will get some sort of ducks in order. But I think the first thing to do is wait and see if we actually get inducted, because you know how unpredictable that is."
