Contraband did not sound modern in any aspect aside from the production, because they hired a "nu-metal" producer who used those types of recording techniques
And Slash went out of his way to throw the producer under the bus after the fact by saying he didn't know how to properly record guitars. Instead of, you know, just getting another producer when they were recording the album. Kind of like he talked up Libertad like it was a great album, artistically liberating, totally organic and cohesive and amazing, and now he says that the rest of the band caved in and let Weiland dominate the direction of the album.
I remember the 1995 interview when Slash was complaining about how Axl was into Pearl Jam and was interested in doing some songs in that style, and how Pearl Jam sucks. Fast forward 11 years and he's in a band with a guy who a lot of people called an Eddie Vedder clone when he first came on the scene, making an album with a producer who producer 4 Pearl Jam albums
I also don't see how Slash doing an industrial song would be "copying" somebody else, anymore than him doing the same type of music he's always done is copying Joe Perry and Jimmy Page

I honestly think Axl would rather just go back into exile and stay there than do a reunion which no doubt he would view as crawling back to the other guys even if that wasn't the case
You mentioned the money issue but it's pretty obvious he isn't hurting for cash. It was just a couple years back where Sanctuary paid him $20 million to lease the licensing rights to his catalogue for 20 years
Axl is a different type of person than people like Vince Neil, Tommy Lee, and David Lee Roth. He's more of a Roger Waters type

As Axl said, the difference between him and Slash is that he (Axl) didn't hate every new type of music that came out.
Axl liked Aerosmith, Hanoi Rocks, Queen, and Zeppelin so he incorporated those styles into his music. Did that make him a poser?
So if he liked NIN and Pearl Jam why would adding those influences to what he was doing make him a poser?
There was a funny quote, I think it may have been from Lars, where back in like '89 before NIN had become big, Axl was playing their songs. There was a comment about how everyone else was still listening to Judas Priest. The metal meatheads were all like "what the fuck is this shit?" and Axl made a comment along the lines of "this is going to be huge"
The band always took bits and pieces from other bands they liked and incorporated those sounds into their music, so I don't really get the argument that incorporating a style you like from the 70's is cool but if it's from the 90's it's fake

Great job at analyzing the song. It's definitely the big 'fuck you' on this album, and the album needed that. Bucket's solo suits this song perfectly in its Slash-like vibe.
The album as a whole is very personal, and its why tracks such as Shackler's and Scraped stand out like sore thumbs. They don't belong in the context of the other tracks. If Chinese Democracy was a concept album, it would fail simply for the inclusion of those two tracks.
I would agree with you on the Shackler's point, however the lyrics in Scraped are pretty fitting with the mood of the album, even if they are more upbeat
They are very defiant but in a positive way. The stuff about feeling like the world's on his shoulders and his life's a catastrophe but overcoming it and refusing to relent or give up
Even Shackler's the "don't ever try to tell me how much you care for me" and "no one is stopping you from doing what you want to do" stuff is pretty fitting as well

Nice breakdown pollux
I definitely think the song is primarily about Slash. There are elements of it that could be about the media and certain groups of fans but overall it seems about a particular person, and definitely not a woman
I think that the parts about the person setting out to hurt him refers to the way Slash has repeatedly spoken about Axl in a negative light to the press. The implication being that Slash knows Axl, knows he is a very private person, and understands that saying those things in a public forum would hurt him and does it anyway.
The part about "nobody cares about you" probably has to do with how Slash has been interviewed about his Snakepit and VR albums but the interviewers always want him to talk about Guns and Axl.
The "you've got all the answers, you know everything" part seems about how Slash has talked at length about the "right" way to make music and how Axl's methods don't line up his view of what's right.
I love the "Nobody owes you, not one God damn thing" line, the way that it's sung and the way it fits the context of the song.
The other thing is that he chose a song with such a beautiful, melodic Bucket solo to express these feelings which seems like an additional "fuck you"

Yeah. Hell, it's just a buck

Sorry is probably the best song on the whole album, but as a single I'm not sure. I mean it's definitely hypnotic and gets stuck in your head, but it's 6 minutes long and takes almost 2 minutes to hit the chorus
Scraped would be a rock radio hit for sure, it is simple, heavy, the lyrics are easy to understand, and has the catchiest chorus on the album
This I Love, I refuse to judge based on the unlistenable version I heard, but it seems like it could go over well on top 40, pop radio

I actually think Catcher has been improved in every category aside from the actual solo. I thought the old version was flat and dry musically, the new one has more punch and energy to it
The intro sounded cluttered on my computer but actually quite good on the stereo.
One thing not to lose site of is that for as much technology was used creating this album, it's pretty clear that it's old school in the way it was mixed and mastered, and that it's really meant to be enjoyed on CD or LP on a real stereo, not a lossy, remastered digital file played on computer speakers
Hearing leaks is cool to get a general feel for the songs and the structure but I'm looking forward to hearing the real deal in a couple weeks
The one song I would "complain" about is The Blues. I wish they would do a hybrid 2006 and 2002 version. I liked the 2006 version's piano only intro but the 2002 whistling synths from Pitman during the "I don't know just what I should do" part were one of the coolest parts of the song, better than the strings
Sorry is absolutely sick. Baz's description was pretty good I thought. The melodies are completely hypnotic and get ingrained in your mind

Axl doesn't give a fuck about a reunion
If his motivation was money, he would have done a reunion or released 4 albums since the breakup by now
He is rich, and his legend is intact, and he never has to work again. His pride and principles will never allow a reunion to happen. Even though Slash and Duff have all but begged for one in their interviews, the public and press would view a reunion as Axl crawling back to them. He would rather vanish into the night than go out being viewed that way

Just the vocals and rhythm guitar parts
The coolest part is the rhythm section during the absent solo, it kicks ass
