Fair enough, I thought you were raggin' on me 'cause of the AFD, Part II comment. Had to be sure before I lashed out
Strange thing is though: CITR, although a classic ballad in every sense of the word, does nothing for me; If The World (totally un-GNR and un-AFD) is my second favorite leak. Only thing wrong with it for me is Axl's opening lines (to squeeky for my tastes).

I don't really agree with him though. I reckon there's plenty of guitarists out there that could make nuGNR sound more "rock". I think he's changing his act to avoid direct comparisons.
But more relevantly: I agree with you, I would prefer if they did a more classic hardrock GNR type album. As I've always openly proclaimed: I'd love an AFD, part II.
yea, i mean don't confuse me with those tragic idiots who are stuck in a timewarp and a demanding a replica of appetite, but more songs like catcher, which i believe sound like updated versions of the classic ballads, and less of the cluster fuck songs like if the world. in saying that i do love all the leaks, but i do believe if Axl recorded more traditional bluesy rockers, they could sound relevant and contemporary, as catcher does.
Did you just call me a "tragic idiot stuck in a timewarp"?

Well, I remember Axl saying in an interview years back when asked what kept him from doing another blues-based rock album that is was Slash (or lack thereof).
Loder: What prevented you from doing, like, a traditional rock record?
Rose: Slash.
Loder: [Laughs] But you could have found another guitar player or something, right?
Rose: Well, not really.... Not to make a true Guns record.source: http://www.heretodaygonetohell.com/arti … ticleid=28

I like the chorus in SR the least. IMO it's horrible. On the other hand I think the "ooh..." OMG chorus (or more likely a bridge) is awful, too, but the "Oh My God, I can't deny..." chorus is pretty catchy and I really dig that. Although OMG has some horrible parts (out of tone guitars, out of place part), it's among the better rockers (CD, Better) of the Nu-Era. The others are barely listenable for me.
Right, that was the chorus in OMG. I indeed prefer the bridge then.

This will get me a lot of flack, but I've always had a soft spot for the remake of House on Haunted Hill.
I dunno, but I've always found this sort of "Noir" mental institution settings extremely unnerving. The humor in the remake puts the icing on the cake for me .

I feel that this song is similar to OMG in the industrial vibe, but this one succeeds where OMG struggles to maintain a melody that's catchy to a casual listener - as there are just too many forces pulling in different directions on that track - even though its cool....this one is chaos but with some kind of underlying logic to it....
Interesting, I think the OMG chorus the best part of that song, and much better than Shackler's. Or maybe I'm confusing OMG's chorus & bridge? It's been a long time since I heard that song... I'm talking about the part that starts with "ooh" .
TheMole wrote:Sadly, this obviously isn't true. Bucket (a major driving factor behind this song) is gone, and we've heard a bunch of other (in my opinion lesser) songs before this one.
I dunno...I think Axl working with bucket gives him the chance at some structure and might make his music more approachable. Don't get me wrong - bucket has formidable skills on the guitar - but I've got to admit - I find that creatively - in his own random way he's actually quite repedative...all his songs seem to have jumps and tempo/style changes..mid song....they are like show reals of really cool stuff you can do on guitar...but its like watching a movie of trailers - they lack the ch-herance of a proper song structure. I think thats what people like TWAT - its bucket playing in a trraditional rock context...hopefulyl there's more of that kind of thing on the album. Although it seems his use has been limited in most of the track's we've heard to the occasional tapping burst.
Oh no, sure. I'm not enough of a bucket fan to know for sure, but I can image his song writing skills have improved during his tenure in GNR. Agreed on the bucket-being-more-repetitive-than-some-give-him-credit-for thing. I'm not sure Bucket has been limited by Axl though. I think Shackler's Revenge and possibly If The World are Bucket's idea's and Axl expanded on those.

Dunno if anyone still check's MSL's site, but I haven't seen this posted here so I thought I'd share:
the events of the last week have really changed the GNR landscape when it comes to the hoarding of information and material. the more fernando attacked me, the more people i had emailing in to say that they'd received songs from him in the past. the more azoff threatened journalists, the more people i had emailing in with stories their editors were prohibiting them from writing.
i've had to sit on this story a day or two longer than i would have liked as it took quite a bit of time to double source the facts. however, after speaking to multiple sources with knowledge of the situation, mistersaintlaurent.com is pleased to report the following:
the current intended release date for CHINESE DEMOCRACY is november 25, 2008. it is azoff's strong preference that the release be done through best buy and not wal-mart. i've been told his reasoning is two-fold. #1, azoff's goal is to be able to create future bidding wars between the two retail giants for his other acts and feels best buy will lose interest in these type of promotions if they always lose out to wal-mart. #2, if he goes with wal-mart, he has to convince axl to swap a couple of tracks from volume 1 with tracks from the other volumes to avoid the dreaded parental advisory warning.
i was also told that the story was leaked by azoff to put pressure on best buy to up their offer and close the deal. it's no coincidence that this story hit right before wal-mart's AC/DC deal was finally publically announced. it is azoff's hope that fear of ending up with egg on their face will force best buy to roll out the red carpet in every imaginable way for chinese democracy.

Mr Winkler, Mr Mole, please chill! I only just came here and it's a little slice of heaven with brains compared to the garbage I've been ploughing through for the last 8 years. I know you can keep it above the belt. One long post that is disagreeable and flawed is a hell of a lot better than 20 idiots posting 'i fink it sux thers no tune'.
Trust me, I'm generally a very laid back guy. I hate single-line posts as well. In fact, I might get a bit long winded at times. Mr. Wrinkler's response was uncalled for by whatever standard you measure it.
But hey, as he said in another thread:
my apologies for the 'stupid' remark, i was so swept up in the excitement of hearing shackler's that anyone who dissed its it automatically became my enemy.
I guess I brought this onto myself, being how I'm less than 100% over-the-top in love with Shackler's Revenge...

The chorus itself is not good at all. It's bland, uninspired, messy and noisy. It's usually the other way around, but when the chorus comes on I start looking forward to the next verse. This is easily the weakest part of the song and kills it for me.
he was asking for it!!
ok sorry but that alone just got me pissed.
I am flabbergasted. The fact that I don't like the chorus pisses you off? Don't you think you should re-consider your value system?
As for me being a BH lover, puh-lease. I'm not going to dignify you by rebutting your "statements" one by one, but I assure you that it's not the case. My post history on here will support this.

I know it's a little late 'n all, but I'm gonna write down a more detailed review of the song, as I see it.
The intro (if you ignore the ridiculous distorted chord bashing the first two seconds) is amazing, signature buckethead. My only gripe with it might be that's it's very reminiscent in style of a lot of Bucket's stuff, but that's not really relevant to the general public anyway.
Then, when the verse kicks in, and Axl starts singing in that low, low voice. That is one of the highpoints of the song for me. The vocals are amazing in this one, the timing is perfect and the lyrics (although possibly overly simple) fit the song.
The pre-chorus is ok, but not great. Too Zombie-esque in the rhythm department and the riffs and fills over the B-chord are too uninspired to elevate it to great heights. But overall, I still like this part. The transition from the verse is too abrupt though.

The solo, well... I don't like it, but I think there are some cool ideas in there. I usually don't mind the "sound-effect" style segments in a solo, but this one overdoes it a little bit. I miss coherence, and most of all melody.
The guitar sounds are not my cup of tea, except for the bucket interludes. I love the smoothness of his sound. Very well rounded (as it usually is).
So all-in-all this song is the best Rocker we've had from these guys so far (possibly followed by CD). Still some way under my own personal expectations. Overall, if this was the first song I've heard from these guys, I wouldn't be disappointed as it seems as if it is a good start and leaves room for the band to grow.
Sadly, this obviously isn't true. Bucket (a major driving factor behind this song) is gone, and we've heard a bunch of other (in my opinion lesser) songs before this one.
I'm still waiting for that ace up Axl's sleeve.
