I gave up in 2009 once Robin left.

I checked in periodically and threw in the towel for good in 2011 after that Rock In Rio embarrassment.

I went in 2012 (my first post here on Evo) but it was clear it was a nostalgia / just for money thing at that point.

The thing about UYI is it feels very chaotic and never cohesive, for better and worse. That's why I like Double Talkin' Jive. It feels like a band jam.

Ironically enough they're incredibly sharp on The Spaghetti Incident but the material itself is pretty underwhelming.

The current music industry like most other entertainment industries is an embarrassing race to the bottom. The fact is most people liked GNR back in the day because Axl and Slash were fuckable, it's never about the music for most people, especially women.

I wish that we would've uncovered full Jackie Chan or a confirmation on whatever else was on the Piazza/Trunk disc.

Sigh.

I wish I had a couple mil to flush these guys out of hiding.

Someone wanna get me up to speed on this? I don't follow the trades these days.

The 2002 tour made Axl look like a bad joke. The 2006 tour made him look like a roaring lion. It was an amazing comeback.

The openers at Hammerstein got killer reviews, he was far more public, and the tour culminated with a glowing piece in the LA Times about Axl reclaiming his throne against the odds. The buzz was pretty great all year long but there was zero publicity and promotion which was a terrible decision and tour sales suffered because of it. It was all downhill from there.

I bet there is so much behind the scenes fuckery it'll make your head spin. It'll never get out though.

And James, that's obviously true in a broad sense but if Slash and Duff get their hands on the material it'll be John Williams instead of Tchaikovsky or be dumbed down bullshit like 2012 GNR's Oh My God. I want the best. Period. I could give a fuck that Slash is back. Slash can be a marketing puppet and play on 2 songs. Go get your fucking shine box.

The point was, it never got off the ground or finished because it kept on changing. Supergroups don't last for a reason. Gimmicky in themselves and too many egos in one room. I'd rather have a rotating door with an end product than an ever-metastasizing operation that never gets anything done. The early record had a different sound than every other version because there were too many cooks in the kitchen.

Axl wanted to be David Bowie. The record company should've managed him more closely but enabled him to get his rocks off. It it failed, it failed, and they could tell him to fuck off into retirement or back into Slash's desperate arms.

Go make your UYI III record Axl. That'll sell. Boom. Ok, now make your contemporary record. Great. Now make your industrial nu-metal soundscape record. Awesome.

The supergroup thing was the flaw of the whole operation. It lost and regained an identity each time someone quit or was added. Naturally. The early leaks are all Robin (and other players) and the mid-leaks are more Bucket. What's it gonna be? I love the finished record (it works better instrumentally than with vocals) but Axl had to include everyone. Fuck off with that. Bucket's pure melody could've carried most of the material, not this slap dick pastiche. Most people don't notice, I do, and so did the old timers who reviewed it when it went to market.

GNR should have been marketed as the Super Bowl of rock bands. It doesn't matter who's playing, we've got the best in the world. Rebrand the look of GNR every album cycle.

If they were to release a new album (doubt it) they could go one of two routes, the first is a semi-vault clearing via a 2-disc Best Of which consists of the aforementioned hits and a second disc of mid-1990s GNR stuff. Think Michael Jackson HIStory. The other route is Chinese Democracy "Mk. II" with Slash and Duff. Axl mixes the old GNR sound and tries to push it forward into contemporary areas.

I miss the possibility of a new album coming out. It was an exciting time to be a fan.

I also liked the community aspect. You'd come and hang out with your GNR friends basically. You'd have the "new kid" come in and post a fake Chinese Democracy album cover or say he had such-and-such a song and everybody would tell him to fuck off or shut the fuck up and then after a couple of weeks he was one of the bros. It's a great thing that's missing from our society, that sort of bonding.

I miss the half-trolls the most. The ones that would make fun of Merck, Del James, and Beta to their face or account suicide to rip Jarmo or Madison a new one. Great times.

I also miss the Wild West aspect of it. The internet was a different place back in the late 90s. It was like you were a prospector digging for gold and not just GNR stuff but anything else too you could find some crazy shit online that you'd never be able to find nowadays.

Same dude.

I've always loved Double Talkin Jive.

I love the kind of bridge interlude on the Catcher demo that is synth heavy.

#789 Re: Guns N' Roses » One Year Later - Did you get what you wanted? » 426 weeks ago

Not really.

It maybe proves the promoters thought wheeling out fat Axl might be bad for tour profits and/or the marketing team said holy shit no.

New album ready to go before the make-shift tour started? Nonsense.

I hate to be a drive-by shitposter but why you guys spend your time arguing over two parties that couldn't give a hot fuck about you seems to be a misallocation of resources to me.

At least when I talk about New GN'R 2002 I know that I'm just jerking off and wasting my time.
