#71 Re: Guns N' Roses » RUMOR: GN'R Planning SA tour around RIR » 743 weeks ago

The only ones who had any expectation of GNR "saving rock n' roll" are hyperbolic music journalists and record company executives. And what the fuck does that even mean, anyway? What does rock need to be saved from? As far as I can tell rock is doing just fine even if the music industry is going downhill. The Stones, AC/DC, U2, KISS, Aerosmith - any of the big classic rock dinosaurs can go on the road and still sell out arenas and/or stadiums every night. And while there may never be another band that will have the longevity or broad popular appeal as any of them, there's newer bands like the White Stripes, the Strokes, Wolfmother, etc. that are keeping the rock rolling.

They really need to do more from the UYI's when they tour again. And it would be good if they rotated songs in and out of the set from night to night. Like they could do one cover and switch between Live and Let Die, Knockin' On Heaven's Door, Sympathy for the Devil, Down On The Farm, or Since I Don't Have You. Civil War, Don't Cry, November Rain, and Estranged should be played at every show, and then another one or two of the other UYI tracks should be played every night.

And limit the AFD songs to Jungle, It' So Easy, Paradise City and Sweet Child Of Mine and then maybe rotate one or two of the other songs in every night.

Plus four or five from CD - there weren't any clear hits so they can change them around ever night. And two or three new tracks, too!

I'd imagine that legal bullshit has more to do with the reason why they didn't use Brian May's solo. Those sessions were produced by Roy Thomas Baker, right? And if he was dumped as a producer then it probably would be less messy legally to simply not use anything from the sessions he worked on.

I still would have preferred Brian May to re-record his solo, though, than have Ron or one of the other guys do it.

DJ has NO CLUE what he is doing right now.

It just doesn't work that way man. He could spend months writing stuff, walk in the door and have Axl throw every bit of it out in seconds. Not to mention, just because Axl approves some of it, doesn't mean he won't turn around and sit on it for years, before even dusting it off.

Axl can't even get his fuckin' vault out the door, let alone new shit, although knowing DJ's stuff with Sixx:AM, and that bitchin' single from Bumble coming up, they do have some chops potentially to write some good shit. So I feel a bit better about the creativity of the 2010 band than I used to. That's not counting what Tommy & Axl can bring.

I'd love to see the current band get from the vault what they want to redo, rearrange it, write some new stuff, and get it out there, and then just turn around one day in some down time and release the vault as 'lost sessions' in a box set, NIN-style.

It's pointless to keep re-recording Buckethead songs when he hasn't even been in the band for seven years. It's time to move on, if we're gonna move on. Otherwise reunite. You can't tour AFD & CD for decades on end.

Yeah, I have no interest in the current band reworking the Buckethead era (or older) stuff. They should just go though and find the best mixes and dump it all in a box set and/or iTunes edition. Maybe find one or two of the remaining "big guns" and polish them up enough for a couple of singles to promote the set, but just put it the rest of it all out there as-is. And then get to work with the current band on some new ass-kicking songs.

Universal has the final say in rather or not they will release an album. If they don't feel it well do well, they can hold it up as many labels do. Avril Lavigne has been fighting with RCA for over a year to release her latest album. They wouldn't agree unless she recorded What The Hell and released it as her first single, as they didn't feel there were any songs on her album that were commerical enough.

It's amazing that in this day and age of digital everything, that the major labels still look on anything less than multi-platinum CD sales as a failure. Imagine if they did something original and released a monthly EP of five or six songs from the Chi-Dem vault on iTunes with one or two strong tracks and two or three alternate takes, remixes, instrumentals, etc., and then after six months or a year of that put out a physical CD of the best tracks (plus a few new ones). And also a deluxe Reznor-esque limited edition box set. I mean, if they announced "New GNR track on iTunes today" I would buy it without thinking. But instead we get more rumors and aborted plans, and no new music.

Funny that Sorum's just listed as GUNS N ROSES with no mention of Velvet Revolver or The Cult.

I am VERY interested in this stuff.....

Although I admit I'm fascinated by the backstabbing and soap opera drama of the GNR camp, this is what I really care about - the music that we haven't heard.

I like it! I'd pick one up if I saw it at my local Hot Topic.

If MSL wants to shut up the naysayers who still don't believe him, all he has to do is post a new clip of Checkmate/Jackie Chan that goes about five seconds longer than the old one.

Another possibility, too, is that if there is a mole in Axl's organization who wants this stuff released and MSL doesn't do it, then he may simply send it someone else to leak. Or MSL's backup in China may get leaked. There's copies out there in the wild that are close to surfacing so the best they can do is to get CDII out before the leaks inevitably happen.
