James, I completely disagree with your take on these songs, but, out of curiosity, which parts are reminding you of the Cure?

I think it was Axl during the Eddie Trunk interview that said it'd probably be on the second album. But I guess that might have changed a million times since then for all we know.

Yeah, I know enough *about* the song. I'd just went out of my way not to hear it. In 2006, when "Better", "IRS", and "There Was a Time" leaked, I thought "We've probably got about half of the final album now; I don't want to ruin the experience". So, when "Catcher in the Rye" leaked shortly after, I didn't give into the temptation. Two years later, I'm looking at it a little differently.

I think it's stronger than a couple of the first album leaks, and would be really interested in knowing why it's "Probably going to go on the second or third album".

Thanks.

I've been a member there since about 2003, but only post when I have something sarcastic or condescending to add.

Glad to be here!

I actually took the nine "Chinese Democracy" leaks, the non-Chinese Democracy leaks ("Catcher in the Rye" - which I'd never heard before a couple days ago), and the three songs from "Angel Down", and tried to make a semi-cohesive mix out of it.

1.  IRS
2.  Madagascar
3.  Silkworms
4.  (Love Is) A Bitchslap
5.  Riyadh and the Bedouins
6.  If the World
7.  Chinese Democracy
8.  There Was a Time
9.  Message for You
10. Back in the Saddle
11. Stuck Inside
12. Oh My God
13. Catcher in the Rye
14. The Blues
15. Better

If I had to think of it in "Chinese Democracy" terms though, out of the stuff we've already got, I'd probably go with...

1. Chinese Democracy
2. Madagascar
3. If the World
4. IRS
5. Better
6. Message for You
7. The Blues
8. There Was a Time

"Better" and "The Blues" seem like the clear one-two punch to me. "Better", in particular, I feel comfortable playing for people that might be skeptical.

I consider myself more of a HTGTH type, but since the topic's banned there and I found the leaks through GNREvolution, I might as well weigh in with my thoughts.

Riyadh and the Bedouins

I'm not a big fan of this one. I know it's getting a lot of love here. The vocals don't do much for me though, and the fact that it's so reminiscent of a Buckethead track isn't necessarily a good thing. With all that said, it's a huge improvement from the live version. So maybe I'll really enjoy the final version.

If the World

I thought this was pretty good. As different from old GNR as anything the band's done. That's the first thing that you notice, but once you get past that, it starts growing on you. Very cool vibe.

Message for You

I thought this was best of the three new ones. Definitely another one that grows on you. It's not an obvious single (none of the three are), but, more likely, the "Breakdown" or (with a lot of work) "Estranged" of the new album. The lyrics and vocals are among the best that we've heard so far, especially the section that starts with "I told you when I found you". Powerful stuff.

Overall, I'm really liking the way that the album's shaping up. Somehow, it's exactly what I expected and nothing like I expected at the same time.
