#71 Re: Guns N' Roses » Disecting Chinese Democracy: Album Art » 862 weeks ago
Heh. Sorry guys. I had planned to do thread about it and got sidetracked somewhere.
I'm fluent in Japanese, not Chinese. Japanese uses many of the same characters and variations of characters that Chinese does, but obviously it's not the same language. So this is based on my knowledge of Chinese characters, some internet research, and also from talking to a Chinese translator that works at my company.
I should figure out a better layout for this, but anyway...
Page 5:
First 2 are "dream", second 2 are "street". "Street of Dreams"
Page 6:
"China's democratic (political) system." I didn't notice this myself, but my Japanese GF said that this is crappy caligraphy - the individual characters are not well-balanced. She says it looks like someone who doesn't know Chinese wrote it while looking at something. Take that for what it's worth.
Page 9:
Had to look this one up. "To scrape"
Page 10-11 (both the same):
Chinese Democracy. Technically, I think it says China Democracy, but don't quote me on that.
Page 14:
The character for "Yuan", I think, which is the currency of China. Can also mean "money", which explains its use on the IRS lyrics page.
Page 15:
(The image I had was shitty)
Madagascar
Page 16:
The character for "love". Appropriate, but translating it to "This I Love" is a stretch IMO.
And finally...the bottom of the new logo:
"Democracy"
And the spine of the jewel case:
Guns and Roses.
This is interesting though. It does say "Guns n' Roses," but I think it's "wrong." I made this image to show how I think the band name is actually written in China:
Basically, the 2nd character is different, but both mean "and." However, this version gets about 87,200 hits on Google, while the album version gets only around 7,500 hits. When I first started translating these - back before the album release when we only had the leaked liner notes, I believe there were even less hits. Incidentally, the online translator Bablefish spits out the version that is on the CD jacket.
At any rate, that's my interpretations. Neemo....you sure your buddy asked his wife? I really disagree with some of her translations.

Well, Aussie, at the end of his last post there, he did say:
And Checkmate is a bogus title.
The working title is Jackie Chan.

He's more open to questions than I'd expected. Would love for him to come over here and chat with us. I guess it would be slightly more fluent then on those big sites
I think if Axl does come by to talk with us, many of you will be surprised at how open and nice he is. I met and talked to him last year in Tokyo and what struck me more than anything was how genuine and friendly he was. Certainly not the jackass that the media make him out to be.
But obviously, he's also a guy who speaks his mind, and some people can't handle that. I think he'd fit right in with us here.

Didn't see this posted here yet so...
(From http://www.time.com/time/cartoonsofthew … 38,00.html )
Not very funny and mostly cheap shots. Though I did chuckle at "trying to shut down the internet to avoid leaks." They should've made that take up half of the graph.

Man, that sucks. Sorry for your loss.
I'm sure if he's watching from somewhere right now, he's feeling pretty touched by what you wrote about him here. I'm sure it's a sad time for you, but be happy for those memories and the times you had while he was here.
#76 Re: Guns N' Roses » Least Favorite Song(s) » 865 weeks ago
I would have said Scraped the other day, but now I love it. I'm not a drooling fanboy, I swear, but I wouldn't dump anything off the album.
I thought the same thing. I've been loaning the disc to interested friends since I got it. They all ask what I think and my answer has been that I really like it except for Scraped, which "I don't really get yet."
After a week with it though, I like it. At this point, it is honestly difficult for me to pick a least favorite. Maybe IRS, but that's not because I don't like but more that it's not as fresh to me as the others (because I'm a DLMF of course. )
#77 Re: Guns N' Roses » Another skip? » 865 weeks ago
Playing it on the PC here so not the ideal listening environment, but I listened to it about 10 times and didn't hear a skip. There is kind of a syncopated drum fill right there that could be giving you the feeling of a skip.
#78 Re: The Garden » Problems ripping cd's » 865 weeks ago
Excellent (and free) ripper! I also recommend dbpoweramp:
http://www.dbpoweramp.com/download.htm
Both use AccurateRip to help ensure that your data is perfect.
I really think it's a copyright thing. I checked yahoo answers, didn't see much.
I did a bit of Googling, but can't find anything that says that either disc has copy protection. I don't have the Metallica yet, but I know I was able to rip ChiDem without any problems.
Edit to add: Just thought of one more thing. Check out where the files are being saved to. One time I got errors but it wasn't that it couldn't rip, but that my Hard Disk was full and it couldn't save. If you're writing to an external drive, make sure it's connected.
If you haven't yet, try ripping another disk (prefereably one you've ripped before) to see if it's just those 2 discs or all discs.

What kind of problem are you having? Ending up with no data at all? Or do the tracks have noise in them?
Have you tried any other discs? Depending on what the problem is, it's possible that maybe your drive is starting to go bad or maybe is just dirty.

I was just wondering what will happen with gunsnroses.com in another day and 4 hours. You guys think we'll get anything new/interesting up there? Or is it more likely that it just reverts back to the old "Guns react to arrest" page?
As a fan I'm hoping for something cool, but with the apparently little promotion this album is getting, I'm not expecting much.
It'll probably juest be a clock reading 00:00:00:00 for the next few months.
