#911 Re: Guns N' Roses » Where are the AFD on Steroids songs » 902 weeks ago
that Zakk Wylde quote was from when Slash and Duff were still in the band
most of this material was presumably written after they left (weren't Huge and Dizzy tasked with coming up with alot of tracks for a certain period?)
its no surpise to me and I always expected that CD would be ballad-heavy - Axl has always gravitated more towards ballads and now he is solely in the drivers seat it's logical to expect this trend would be played to a larger degree with no Slash etc... to bring the sleazy rockers....
I was just hoping for ballads of the quality of Estranged - and not Don't Cry (if you know what I mean)

I think it's Prostitute for the following reasons:
- It's one of the best songs
- it fits the description of 'fire and ice'
- I think that is what he says at 3.53
- it would suit the tone and message of the song

I'd be quite happy if this track was left off CD (for the love of god, please assign a pristine version of Catcher to the A-list?!)
It's pleasant enough and all I guess, but it just isn't all that impressive and is far too incoherent. It would work well as a jam-style interlude where the band mixes it up while Axl changes outfit and grabs some oxygen etc... between songs
It sounds indulgent, unfocused and basically just like Tommy teased out a fairly bog standard funk/jazz riff and the band layered shit over it. It doesn't bear the hallmarks of quality, structured and classic songwriting. I'm all for the odd bit of experimenting, but lets kep the experimentation at least interesting and unique.
The fact good old uncle Axls nasal and overly rangy vocal performance have also been thrown in the mix for good measure leaves us with a song the critics will have a field day with - held up as proof of what a farcical mess the album is.
Im sorry - this is not what I had in mind at all...

Loving this track and feel it is a solid if a little unremarkable rocker.
I'm afraid old uncle Axl is the weak link here - his vocals sound weak, strained, overproduced and forced.
Bucket, (yet again), is the standout here and really shines on all these leaks. Not matter how good BBF is, he cant hold a candle im afraid - from a playing and a charisma POV.
It's time for Axl to either mend fences with BH or mend fences with Slash and get a reunion going.
Axl and his current merry men can't do justice to CD or AFD imo

The more I hear this song, the more impressed I am with it.
I am starting to think this is one of Axls stronger numbers which furthers my belief that it is indeed the mythical Prostitute. As well being in the camp that thinks the lyric is 'prostitue' at 3.53 - context wise it would fit perfectly and it sounds pretty much like that is what he is saying to my ears at least.
This is a much better structure than some of the others - far less schizophrenic for want of a better word -with some nice subtle hooks and a few surprise melodic shifts that work nicely. It sounds like an important song to me. Axl's vocals are stronger than the other 2 recent leaks as well.
For the love of god I cannot see how some would prefer If the World but it's all a matter of taste I guess.
I see this one as getting closer to the mark to what perhaps TWAT would like to be than TWAT achieves if that makes any sense.

the only ones I could see are Better and The Blues
#917 Re: Guns N' Roses » If the World leak » 903 weeks ago
to me this one seems like a fairly routine jam session with Axl wailing over it
this is pretty uninspiring stuff frankly - a very mediocre track
Axls vocals aren't terribly good either - id wager his vox were recorded during the 02 helium phase
#918 Re: Guns N' Roses » Song #2 (Unknown Title) » 903 weeks ago
To me, this is the pick of the new leaks. A pretty solid song me thinks if not a little overbaked
One thing that strikes me in general on the CD era songs is the complete absence of anything that could resemble humour - it's a very earnest affair - to the point where it often sounds like it is taking itself rather too seriously
#919 Re: Guns N' Roses » two more leaks coming from mygnr » 903 weeks ago
well who thinks what we have are demos or the real thing? I cant decide
If they are the real thing, surely the rest (4 more?) isnt far away?
#920 Re: Guns N' Roses » Overall feelings on the CD era songs.... » 903 weeks ago
just listening to the likes of TWAT, CD, IRS etc.. the old songs and here are my thoughts
TWAT is a significant let down but I am starting to think it is just not that great of a song. It is trying to be Estranged and I am afraid it falls short by a considerable margin. It is nice to hear the outro solp with all the production and drama it deserves however - that solo almost saves the song. But this is not Axl's shining moment on CD I am afraid.
IRS sounds a hell of a lot better - but again, I am afraid it is just not that great a song and no amount of polishing can diminish that fact. Others may disagree, but if this is amongst what is the best 3 or 4 rockers Axl has produced in 16 years then that is frankly a sad state of affairs.
The BLUES - finally it is starting to sound glorious as it should. Amongst the best songs Axl has ever penned and the subtle changes give it the stately, regal feel it deserves. As i've said all along, wouldn't be at all surprised if this is the highlight of the album.
CD- Nice to hear it sounding fuller and see some of the coarseness is stripped away from the version we got a year ago. Overall a more rounded feel to it. Definitely the strongest rocker amongst the bunch.
MADAGASCAR - never been a big fan, buts its amazing what some decent mixing/mastering and production can do. It's sounding a bunch better although I still don't think its all that special. I go through stages with this one - I think this one in particular has a tendencey to sound dated to the 90s which is the last thing Axl needs. Timeless is what he should be aiming for
BETTER - Strong. Very similar to the last leak but bigger. No surprises here
Again, just my 2 cents
