Sad but true. The modern climate of religious extremism has really undermined military logic. When your main enemy is so overtly illogical fragmented and unpredictable things get complicated.

Again, agreed.

What happens is you're no longer dealing with an enemy who is willing to fight "to an extent" to protect and/or represent their country.

You're dealing with an enemy who is willing to die at a moment's notice for what they believe it. They become radicals and delusional. Suddenly they feel everything they do is righteous.

Reminds me more kamikaze pilots in WW2.

Agreed. The U.S. might not have the financial resources of once upon a time.... but neither does the rest of the world. The U.S. stock market is tied into the world stock market. If we do bad, world investors do bad, everyone does bad.

Based on that map alone, the U.S. has lost no foothold.

No one is taking our place. The sooner people realize that, the better. This EU, China, Russia, India pipe dream of a "multi-polar" world is just that....a pipe dream. Anyone who doesn't realize that needs to take a look at that map again and realize that the color red is expanding. People talk of the current world stage as multipolar, but come on.
