I dont thnk he was crying I think it was more  case of rain dripping down his face BUT he did look completey distracted during NR and the way he messed up the lyrics to NOVEMBER RAIN of all songs is very strange. Like Olorin said it's a very Britney Spears kinda meltdown.

Is it out of line to suggest maybe Axl was high on something???   I really think this may have been the worst performance of his career not because of lack of ability(which was admiteddly severely lacking lat night) but because of lack of presennce. I have never seen Axl Rose simply not there in spirit at a  Gn'R show.  he was NOT there last night.

I wonder if his lack of ability hurt his confidence and he simply checked out because of that. Would be an awful feeling as a performer to have a "Who am I kidding?" moment on stage let alone one of the biggest stages hmm

maybe, he checked out for sure because he put a good effort in on Estranged. I haven't seen any fire or real passion (however misdirected at times, he generally put in a solid effort) yet from the vids. Maybe he got some bad drugs and that is why he made the weird drug comment to Tommy.

It had crossed my mind too but who knows?

His voice is there in patches but he didn't seem to have much confidence in it. I thought Nightrain was ok, the classic Axl sound was there in the chorus but it was noticeably absent in other songs.

I don't that's really fair, only because he was on several times. Axl from 92-93 would not have even gone on last night, just like you thought would happen.  It was cool to see him try to get through it and when things broke down he didn't walk off like he has in the past.  Even when he fucked up the lyrics it sounded like the crowd started singing out loud trying to help him.  Something happened that just flipped his switch. He stayed. And there were some powerful moments, IMO.

And the intro to The General sounds friggin wicked.

How do we know it's the intro to The General by the way?

Think what you want but it has already caused people to not want to go see them when they tour the US. Just ask a few of the members here who's friends have now declined and the few members who are now reconsidering going themselves.  This happend last night. You seriously think that the press isn't gonna pick up on this?  Ok than.

Point out to me one mainstream US press article about ANY of sets from this edition of Rock in Rio.

Publications only come out once  week at best! The festival JUST ended. Give it a week. You honestly think RS isn't gonna do a story on it?  Gimem a break.

MTV did a story written by Kurt Loder the DAY AFTER the performance in 2001.  It was uploaded to MTV.com.  I've been a subscriber of RS for many years and in the last decade or so, many of the articles you see in the mag were first posted online, with the exception of feature some interviews/stories.

I don't think RS will do a review of this edition of RIR.  I could be wrong, but there has been no virtually no mention of this show in any mainstream press outlet that I've seen.  Also, RIR - Lisbon had no press coverage in 2006, either.

Live I heard Tommy say to Axl after Patience, "I haven't seen you in over a year..." Someone later said that he said, "I haven't seen you in over a year and I think you did fine." You can see Axl give Tommy a look at the beginning of the PC video and shrug.  Then Tommy starts clapping to the audiance to get them into it.  Axl's face at the start of PC says everything.

It reminds me of that video where he was interviewed at a basketball game in like 2000 or something.

Know the one? In that video it looked like he was on anti-depressents or something. The anger wasn't there, the confidence wasn't there. He seemed happy but also shy and seemed surprised anyone knew who he was. It was like it was a normal street guy accidently mistaken for Axl.

This reminds me of that. It's clearly Axl but he just isn't himself in this video.

I think one of the worst things in the world must be to have the level of talent that Axl has on a good night - or has had at his peak - and then have it randomly crap out on you.

Maybe that's why he doesn't rehrese much? Cos his voice is already stretched thin to get away with a show.

Add this to tommy's comments about "aww man i thought it sounded good and ui havn't seen you in a year" or whatever.

And maybe Axl wasn't liking how he sounded in his monitors - and was saying he was doing better last week or something.

It's entirely speculation. But I have a theory on some days Axl's voice works with a fair bit of power still, but on other days he has to fight to get through a show. We know he's always been an emotional guy. What I think we saw last night was a man who was deeply saddened that his voice was having an off night on a night he desperately wanted to have been great.

That's it! big_smile

Yup, that's what he said.

And holy shit Axl's face at the start of that clip. He looks REAL DOWN.
