Fact is the big banks were losing business in the US at the end of the 19th century. Those old firms were built in archaic Europe on royal charters and bloodline corruption. They couldn't handle the fair rates offered by prospering american ventures. Enter the FED, now 4 banks control 60% of all assets in the United States. Rocky wasn't kidding when he said competition is a sin. And they sure did something about it.

Big companies does tend to swallow lesser competitors, but it is most often due to criminality (like Rocky bribing the railroads to drive out competition), not legal monetary leverage. Fairness need to be enforced and in all likelyhood things will work out just fine. A big part of the game is making you think it won't.
