Re: 14 Year-Old Boy Shoots Armed Intruder
That's one thing about Europe I don't like. They seem to be the exact opposite of the problem.
People shouldn't be gun nuts. I've been around them, and they are a joke.
At the same time people shouldn't be so terrified over them, to villianize them without cause. It'd be like taking steak knifes away because they can kill a man.
Even in America, we wake up everyday and can walk the streets without guns or a fear of getting shot. It's really not the big deal it's made out to be.
It's really not a big deal in Europe too. It's a certain type of person who likes to vilify america and make europe out to be a utopia that does that.
It's easy to get guns in europe if you want them.
Even the thing of certain police forces being unarmed is a joke.
There are armed and unarmed units. If an unarmed unit has an issue, the armed unit is deployed. All the detectives carry weapons. The only sections of the policing forces in EU countries that don't have guns are the traffic cops.
Re: 14 Year-Old Boy Shoots Armed Intruder
Getting a gun, easy in any country, carrying and using it, not recommended unless you're a full time criminal.
Apart from in some states the US is the only country on earth where gun ownership is truly legal.
All the bs about guns leading to a more dangerous society really gets to me over here. Of all the countries I've been to in Europe the UK was the most unsafe place, and they have the strictest laws on the continent. Switzerland and Norway on the other hand are like a kindergarden and they have one of the largest gun ownership in the world.

I love the usa...but growing up in Australia...i find it hard to understand how people can argue that guns don't make stuff more dangerous.
Say you sleep with some guys GF.
Over here he's going to come after me with a broken bottle or a fucking knife or something. Unless he's a mobster. But if he's an average joe. It's baseball bat or knife on my doorstep...but over there he's coming around with a fucking shotgun....
It's self evident to me that it's more dangerous.
Re: 14 Year-Old Boy Shoots Armed Intruder
If the UK had our gun laws their crime rate would be way, way, worse, so Monkey has a point there.
We have a bigger population than most countries, our poverty, revolving door prison systems, deteriorating education, irresponsible parents, mixed with easy access to guns, makes the problem worse.
Those countries you mentioned like Germany, just look at their political system... It doesn't take a genius to figure things out.
Re: 14 Year-Old Boy Shoots Armed Intruder
Crime rate is determined by social policy, not gun availability. Like I said, you don't see people shooting each other up in those countries even though there are lots of guns, because there are no ghettos where that type of crime can flourish.
And while sleeping with the gf of a guy with a gun is more dangerous than one without I'd say that's a situation fairly easily avoided. Going around being a dick will cause you problems in any society.
I for one would prefer the option of defending myself against criminals and rouge governments. There's a reason dictatorships always seizes the population's guns first, like in Germany.
Re: 14 Year-Old Boy Shoots Armed Intruder
Dude, I just can't get on board with the Black Helicopter stuff.
If the thugs in the UK had access to more guns, there would be incredible amounts of gun violence. Not having access to a gun in certain places keeps the murder rates low. I think that's a given.
But you're basically saying what I did, but there's also a psychological aspect to it in America. There was a great documentary that chronicled the history of violence in America and there was a direct connection to our Civil War and how violence just skyrocketed afterwards, with a direct link to violence today, the communities where violence is the most prevalent, along with economics, alcohol and drug addictions and race relations. Incredible stuff.
Our history is etched with gun violence. America was the first nation born by a gun.

I agree....but hypothetically speaking....a certain amount of the population are going to do stupid things. The guns don't make the problems, but they make the problems worse. That is:
A stupid decision with a knife is usually better than a stupid decision with a gun.
Sure the extreme criminals will still have guns here, but we have an armed police force to deal with that element. And, I suspect that for every heroic-citizen who saves the day because he had a gun (like the 14yo in this story) there would be many more people who lost their temper at someone, accidentally shot themselves.
Even in the evil government scenario you propose, how often does it happen in western countries that the goverment sends around storm troops to take control vs how many times a year does someone go shoot their ex-girlfriends new lover or something. It's not that the guns themselves are bad, it's that problems that exist without them seem to be magnified with them around.
Re: 14 Year-Old Boy Shoots Armed Intruder
Problem is once you get the storm troopers around all those cheating girlfriend survivors are going to be dead anyway. I'd say that's a fair trade off for the stability and longevity of a free society.
And saying it can't happen is ridiculous, the reason it's an amendment in the first place is because it did happen.

Re: 14 Year-Old Boy Shoots Armed Intruder
I'm not saying it can't happen - but it doesn't happen very often.
For example my father lived and died his whole life here without a storm-trouper incident occurring, but, for every one of those years here, over in the USA - X thousand people died in gun accidents, and X thousand died in intentional gun incidents, and X thousand were injured without death.
It's about the proportional likelihood to me.
