Re: Vince Neil: "Axl Rose Let His Fans Down"
It's plain and simple: if you wanna bury AFD, Lies, UYI, the past, then don't play a shitload of songs from that era.
Re: Vince Neil: "Axl Rose Let His Fans Down"
MIA has way more guts than Axl now.
While it is a good example, its not exactly the same thing. She's a current artist, does what she wants, and has people starving for new material. While us GNR nerds debate Vince Neil commenting on a guitarist that's done nothing, her fans are going apeshit because she posted a 'tweet' last week about being "7 songs deep" into the recording of the new record.
Like Cornell, she's one of those "all action, little talk" artists.
Axl is tackling a different beast. The name GNR brings certain expectations. Can he hit the road playing a set comprised of 70-90% unheard material? Probably not, as people do expect certain songs. Could he up the average a bit? Sure.
If he had wanted to veer away from the oldies, he could have slowly phased in the new era and as the band evolved musically, the fan base would have adapted.
Its situations like that where going solo instead of having the GNR label around his neck would have done wonders, and yes I realize that's the deadest horse of all.

While you do make a point that MIA is different than Axl you surely can see the analogy. Like you said she does what she wants and her fans are starving for new music. Axl does what he wants but the difference now is that he ain't hungry anymore. When GNR came out and even in the Illusion era, GNR were hungry to be the best and to take the world by storm. While MIA fans are hungry for new material, she is probably hungry to give it thme and be the best at what she does. Axl ain't anymore. And at least she tweeted about being in recording. Axl.... Well. MIA is little talk and all action. Axl is no talk but no action.
Re: Vince Neil: "Axl Rose Let His Fans Down"
If Axl hit the road playing nothing but CD and announced that was what he would be doing, it would be the shortest and least successful tour in music history. 500 outspoken internet people want to hear new music, millions of other people want to hear AFD and UYI. That's the reality of the situation.

I agree and to my mind there's nothing wrong with that. People who go see Ac/Dc will enjoy Black Ice, but everyone wants them to play "Back in Black" or some of the other old favourites at some point in the set. Likewise if you go see motley you want a bit of "Dr Feelgood", mixed in with "saints of La" Metallica no doubt get endless calls for 'Enter Sandman' and 'Master of Puppets' - along with the death magnetic tracks.
UYI and AFD are the records that made GNR famous....so it's only natural for bulk of the audience to want to hear the songs they know and love. If axl refused to ever play jungle again, the audiences would be sad, they love the song.
There are hardcores like some of us here who adore the new album, and would love for a new setlist to be very heavy in tracks from it, but realisticly most of the audience will expect a sizable portion of the classics to go with it.
I'd like a bit of both myself, some of the old favourites, and some of the new tracks that i've grown to love and that showcase the new band well.

The major difference though is that AC/DC haven't changed their sound at all in the last 20 years. They stuck with something that worked. GN'R is a different beast. Old GN'R and Nu GN'R is like comparing Deep Purple to Ritchie Blackmore's solo Midevil folk albums.

faldor wrote:Oh please don't give me the whole "they played UYI songs well before those albums were out" excuse. That was also 18 years ago before the internet, leaking songs, etc. Playing new songs was a cool thing and would only be heard by the "fans" who attended the shows. Nowadays it's a whole lot different. Give me a more current example and I'll let that slide, but let's not reach back to 1991.
Again, Axl played the songs that were leaked. If he had no balls or was afraid to play something new, why would he play those songs? It wasn't written in stone that he had to play new songs. He chose to play them, presumably because they were leaked, and he kept the other songs on CD to himself for the time being. So again, we now have heard a full album's worth of material, and he's not gonna play any of it? I find that hard to believe.
We won't know for sure until they actually get out on the road, but I like the chances of hearing some "other" songs being played.
*lol* Would you prefer I play the ostrich game and pretend Axl's the shit? Ok. Axl's has balls the size of grapefruits. Makes me laugh cause I give you a perfect example and you refuse to hear it. And James nice example. MIA has way more guts than Axl now. And faldor lemme tell you the only reason you heard 5 new songs live or even the album is because leaks happened or else Axl would still be scared to release his songs.
That's exactly what I've been trying to say. He played the new songs that leaked. He didn't have to, but he did. Now he's got a full album of new material out. If history repeats itself, he WILL play those songs. Again, not sure where you're pulling this idea that we're not gonna hear the songs live. So he didn't perform the songs until they were out there. That happened, we can't change that fact. But now we have them and IF/when they hit the road again I'm sure we'll get to hear some more. Just sit back and relax in the meantime.
As for the MIA example, James summed it up well. She's a current artist with an active fanbase who is hungry to hear new material. And while I admire her effort to play her new songs, her discography was/is a little more limited than GNR's. I know people on THESE boards want to hear new songs, but the people on these boards probably makes up a large minority of the people who go to the shows night in and night out. With the attention Chinese Democracy has gotten, like Buzz said, if they played a bulk of new songs there would be a massive outcry.
And when did Axl ever say he wanted to bury AFD, Lies, UYI? I don't recall him saying that. All I've heard from him recently is how he plays songs for people who attend the shows, and obviously the setlist is geared towards them. Back in the early 90's GNR was the most dangerous band in the world and they could do no wrong. They could play anything they wanted and get away with pretty much anything. That's not the case anymore. Axl is not a young punk from Indiana anymore. Times have changed. If you want Axl to give a big middle finger to the world and play all of CD, new songs, and bury the classics you'll see crowds a lot smaller than they've been in the past. Maybe one day when you get Axl to play a show in your backyard you can get him to play exactly what you want to hear. Until then, I'll take whatever I can get.

they could still do a CD heavy set and still add classics....and axl could explain the composition of the setlist to the crowd so that the fans who arent in he know would understand
say an 18 song set
jungle
scom
patience
nr
PC
DC
ycbm
kohd
lald
which is 9 that should satisfy and classic guns fan .... then fill out the rest of the set with whatever CD tracks they feel like on any particular night (ie)
better
twat
irs
scraped
sorry
madagascar
cd
street of dreams
catcher
