Re: Does anyone else get the impression that Axl is trying to re-build ...
If we're being honest here, every single replacement since 1990 has been a degradation to the musician that they have replaced. Judging by the majority of posts that I read on this forum, it seems to be the consensus that the 2002 lineup was far better than (what we know to be) the line-up that we have today.
Look at our lineup today. Do any of you see Fortus, Ferrar, Pittman, Ashba, or Bumble walking out on Axl? I sure as hell don't. What better do they have to do? What more are they capable of? They're all 40 something average musicians who are barely recognizable (if at all) to the general public. If these guys were to leave it would likely be because Axl chose to fire them.
Do you guys think this is what Axl was aiming for? Surely it has to get old replacing guitar players and drummers every tour simply because they get sick and tired of wasting their lives doing nothing. But if Axl is able to keep a bunch of over the hill, nowhere else to go, average at best, studio musicians on the payroll, this is one concern that he will no longer have.
I read this on another forum:
This is like when Jefferson Airplane turned into Jefferson Starship and finally to just Starship. This is the Starship lineup of Axl and friends. Bumblefoot and Frank equal bargain basement.
I agree.
Re: Does anyone else get the impression that Axl is trying to re-build ...
People were moshing to Chinese Democracy in 2006.
Pretty unique experience to see that reaction. Axl was dead fuckin' on, and the energy was through the roof. It might as well been Jungle...
Yeah I agree, also a question, has anyone else who was within sight of the band (I mean them seeing you) felt a bit like a dick for singing along to what at the time only, what was it Axl called "downloading bastards" or something could have had?
Swear I caught that big bouncer guy glaring at me & my neighbouring sing-a-longa downloaders during those songs!
Yeah exactly, casual fans never want to hear new songs. They want to hear the hits that they know. And if the lead singer EVER announces "this is something off our new album", you're guaranteed a mass exodus to the concession stand/bathrooms.... It just happens.
Done it myself with other bands, it sucks to be hit with stuff you don't know and doubly so when the band's "changed direction" or whatever and the new stuff sounds NOTHING like the old stuff.
Esy to be on the inside looking out at people who act like that to GnR when we all heard the new stuff anyway (like I said above) but yeah, new stuff you don't know, that's not what you might think you've paid for, and oftentimes the first time you hear a song live the lyrics and hooks are just so much mush.

Circa 2006
He condemns his fans for downloading the leaks of new his songs, and then plays those same songs in concert.
:shrugs:
Mr. Lofton could probably articulate this better than I can.

I'm pretty sure every time Axl mentioned any 'downloading motherfuckers' when he saw them singing along to the leaks it was said with a glint in his eye and a smile.
I might be wrong but I'm not sure there's a single Axl quote that condemns the fans for downloading the leaks. I think he's condemned the leakers but not the the fans who've downloaded them.

There were some people in the audience that thought I was a roadie, because I was singing along with the new songs.
Probably the most significant moment was when I was singing along with Better and Axl gave me the thumbs up.

They were probably figruing the songs had already been heard by a large number of fans and they might as well shake them out live, after everything I've read ity seems like the delays on ChiDem were not of the band's choosing, so why not make the best of several bad situations and just play the stuff people are forumming and stuff about?

Sweet!
Re: Does anyone else get the impression that Axl is trying to re-build ...
so you guys think that axl has these guys in gnt because he figures they wont leave? seriously?
hmmm, i dont think so, they are all great musicians in their own rights, and as i see it each one represents a different part of the music that axl has admired over the years, Tommy has rock music in his bones and brings credibility from the 80's us punk scene, Pittman is cut fro the same cloth as TooL and industrial rock emerged from, Dizzy is a tie to the old band, Ron is a world class guitar virtuoso, Richard brings a tie to pop music and is a session musician extraordinaire that has been on countless pop hits, ashba is one of the ones responsible for motley crue's (and thus 80's rock) return to prominance, frank is a hard hitting drummer ala Matt sorum, to boot he is a protege of Brain (ala a nice mix between the old and new sound of gnr)
the formula is there to bring it all together, but until the tour and promo wheels begin they cant do a whole lot...at the end of the day its Axl that needs to be ready and Axl that needs to lead the charge, i think that he has a superb team in place to bring respectability back the the GnR name, but until the red headed recluse decides to come out of his cave its all for naught
as for rebuilding? rebuilding what exactly? the topic title says rebuild but the context of the post doesnt touch that particular subject at all ... do i think he's surrounded by "yes-men"? no not really, just surrounded himself with peopel that respect that GnR is his baby and they have helped him put together the first album after he has attempeted to rebuild what once was...the time for rebuilding is long over....it was over before the 2001 lineup hit the stage in Vegas
