Then what were the USC, Ohio State, and Miami implosions about? Sure corruption is widespread, in part because the rules are impossible to abide by, but NCAA does take these things as seriously as their resources allow. They don't have the capacity to handle all the infractions and illegal benefits that happen, but they did rip a Heisman away from a player and take a National Championship from a school. I disagree with those decisions, actually, but they do show that they're not out to protect people.

Huge win for the Bills today. Defense surviving on big plays and still giving up huge chunks of yards, so I don't know how far this team can actually go this year. But they're thrilling to watch, and a much better 4-1 than the 08 Bills, even if they're not one of the league's best.
Are the 49ers for real? If not for that miracle the Cowboys pulled off to beat them in OT, they'd be 5-0... crazy. I'm still not 100% sold on Detroit either although I won't dispute that they're the best they've been in a long long time.
Giants loss the shocker of the day. Giants/Bills next week will be an interesting match-up.

New England's style is great for September football, but I agree faldor that the identity probably won't cut it long term. That passing game gets a lot harder in December, we saw that happen last year, and then the defense HAS to play. I still think the Pats are the favorites for the AFC, but really only because Pittsburgh, San Diego, and Indianapolis all appear to be less than advertised. Oakland and Houston look to have legitimate shots now, although the Ravens/Jets/Bills and the teams I've already mentioned can be good to great. But I think the NFC should be licking their lips looking at this year's AFC, especially if Atlanta and Philly can right their ships.

That might've been the biggest Bills win of my life. This is the most likable and resilient Bills team I've ever watched, and I sat through all of those 15 consecutive losses to the Pats. I was 12 the last time they beat the Pats. I don't think I'd listened to Use Your Illusion yet! The feeling of finally getting over that hump... hard to describe. My chest really did (and still does) feel lighter. It was a great game and a great moment for a team I underestimated coming into the season. Fitz is due a big raise, I hope to see him locked up long term by the bye week. Chan Gailey's been doing an awesome job coaching this team and the offense specifically (he calls the plays), he hasn't yet gotten much credit for their play but his schemes have hid many weaknesses on the O-line. Fitz also knows how to adjust blocking presnap and reads blitzes much better than Edwards or Losman ever did.
This is the weirdest NFL season we've ever seen. I don't think defense is forever a thing of the past like some are saying, but certainly this is the most prolific passing season ever for the league. I'm enjoying it, and trust some D-coordinator will figure out how to shut down these 300-400 yard passers eventually.

That's funny, my suicide league I had the Browns to beat the Bengals... also ended poorly for me. Week 1 was full of surprises as it always is. I thought the Bills would win but didn't see the blowout coming at all, that was a shock. St. Louis and the Chiefs are in big trouble, and obviously Indy needs Peyton pretty bad. Also didn't think Chicago would be so dominant against Atlanta.
If I could be a bitter small market fan for a second, I also really enjoyed this weekend because I really think that if Fitzpatrick had put up the numbers he had last year on another team (or if he'd been a high draft pick) he'd have been of as much media interest as Mark Sanchez, Matt Cassel, or Tony Romo. Sanchez played decent but any notion of Cassel being a better quarterback than Fitzpatrick are surely dead, and I would never trade him for Romo. Romo's 31, has never won in the playoffs with allegedly one of the most talented teams of the past ten years, and makes a lot of big mistakes. He can take that team to the playoffs but he's never going to be elite. The Cowboys will always be looking up to Aaron Rodgers and Drew Brees.

Yeah the 49ers are where I think Luck would fit best and eventually become a star, but Cincinatti looks like the worst team in the league by far right now. It's a good time for a bad team to mail it in for a year or two, given the new labor deal's big reduction in rookie salaries. The Rams are in major cap trouble because of Bradford, Smith and Long's huge deals. Now it's going to be a lot more affordable to take on consecutive top 3 picks. Hopefully that'll also induce owners, GMs and coaches to be willing to sit unready players (like Cam Newton). Historically you have to play the guy you're paying - the Bills know that all too well, from Rob Johnson "winning" the QB battle with Doug Flutie by virtue of his paycheck which and now it looks like CJ Spiller will get starts over the better Fred Jackson, although maybe that's just because CJ was a Nix/Gailey draft pick and Jackson wasn't.
I think you can hand the Patriots the top seed in the AFC right now. Anything can happen in one playoff game, so I'm not crowning any champions, but that team is now stacked in talent to go with their elite QB/coach. They're scary. I think the Chargers will bounce back from last year to contend this year, and the Steelers and Ravens will be involved like always. The Browns are getting better but they'll struggle in that division. The Jets are a big question mark for me, I'm inclined to think they'll take a step back, but if Sanchez progresses a lot from last year he'll more than make up for their aging D and run game which hasn't been the same since Thomas Jones left. But I think this year Houston will be better than them, and finally be able to make the playoffs. The Colts are old, but if Manning's healthy, they still have the talent to compete with the best teams and win that division.
The NFC I don't follow nearly as closely so I don't have many predictions for them. The NFC West is so terrible it's a crapshoot. The Packers and Falcons and Saints will likely all contend, but I'm not sold on the Philadelphia 'dream team', although I don't know how strong Dallas or NYG will be (not implying they won't be strong, just straight up ignorance) so they might win the division without being elite.

I don't think so misterID but certainly they'll take Andrew Luck if they get the chance. A lot of fans have been talking about how the Bills of the last ten years have averaged about 6-10 without ever dipping bad enough to get a top 5 pick - until last year, and Dareus looks like the best draft pick the Bills have made in the first round in a decade. Some people would prefer to see the team get 1-4 wins rather than 6-8, especially with all of the first round whiffs the organization's had the past decade (Maybin, McKelvin's been disappointing,Whitner, Losman). Gailey's offense is a bit too cute, so with the shortened offseason it looks really bad. Pretty clear the offense hasn't found its timing yePr
