#1751 Re: Guns N' Roses » Former GN'R Manager Alan Niven Counters Axl's Claims » 884 weeks ago

I'm pretty sure that Niven's refusal to speak has a lot to do with legal reasons.  Here's something I dug up from an old May 11, 2000 Rolling Stone article by Peter Wilkinson:

"Lately, Axl has been using threats of legal action to limit what people say about him.  A few days after I talked with Alan Niven, G n' R's former manager, who was fired in 1991, Doug Goldstein called me, threatening to sue Niven for allegedly breaching a confidentiality agreement.  Niven later received a letter from Axl's personal lawyer in Los Angeles, demanding he contact ROLLING STONE and attempt to withdraw his comments.  Failure to do so Axl's lawyer warned would result in 'swift and sure legal action'." (Wilkinson, 75)

Axl most likely will not respond at all to this, because typically no matter how intellectually well written or spoken Axl's responses are, if you look deep into the subject matter, rarely does Axl ever back stuff up with evidence, or shed any real light on anything. He just throws his hand grenade into the room, and runs.

This is unfortunately true--he'll either change the subject or go into a long winded rant which at the end of you'll have no clue what he is speaking about.  He'll just go into the familiar victim mode where everyone's out to get him.  I just want concrete answers--he doesn't need to go into paragraphs of discussion.  Sometimes when he writes these long rambling sentences I just get confused and glaze over the material.  Can anyone explain the Oh my God press release from 1999?

Madagascar is one of my fave GNR songs EVER. I have listened to it for 8 years now and still love it.

It took me a long time to actually get what this song is talking about and how the soundbites and everything fit into the context of Axl's life.  I think it suffers from the subpar Axl vocal work and the placement at the back end of the album.  I just get tired from listening to all those other epics.

Sorry is good, If the World i give u that one also

Agreed on this.

TWAT musically is great but I feel Axl drops the ball for the first 3/4 of the song until the amazing outro. the verses and lyrics just for me make no fucking sense at all.

I think of the exact opposite of this song.  I dig like the lyrics and the first 2/3 of the song.  However, the last 1/3 just bores me and I end up not caring about the song.  I'm probably the only one who has this opinion though.

Catcher has some of the greatest melodies, lyrics and piano.synth stuff of any GNR song in history.

Guitar is just fucking ridiculously horrible though and takes the song from a masterpiece to a fucking clusterfuck.  This is what Estranged would sound like without Slash.

I'd love a piano/snyth,drum only version of that song.

Yes!  I'd also add that the wailing backing vocals (check around 3:04) and some of the piano work adds to the clusterfuck of the song.  I also believe the guitar is mixed too high at some points and drowns out Axl's beautiful vocal melodies.  It's too bad as the last verse is truly brilliant but gets kind of overshadowed by the wanky guitar solo.

#1753 Re: Dust N' Bones & Cyborg Slunks » Slash to sue because he can't party » 885 weeks ago

oh please. buying a house is a big deal. if slash was on tour, and perla was with him, they could have gotten a friend or relative to check it out for them. it's a big enough purchase to ask someone to help with. i would do it for any friend of mine. and if they couldn't have waited for tour to end to look for a house, then that is retarded too

Agreed.  A house is a major purchase and should be looked over before buying.  As far as his claim that the real estate agent misrepresented the house, don't all real estate agents do that?  Your usual defense against that is just go over and look at the house and bring up any issues that arise then.  Slash has purchased houses before so he knows the drill.

Last point, why does it seem that members/former members of this band seem to be in litigation so much?  This is not restricted to Axl as I think VR settled a plagurism suit brought on by some guy who claimed VR stole one of his songs.

My vote was between There Was A Time and Catcher in the Rye.  Ultimately I ended up voting for There Was A Time as it is just a bit more messed up than Catcher.

I can't believe the amount of votes ITW is getting.  The music composition itself is excellent and diverse; Axl lyrics could be better but that's nitpicking.

Sweet, I scored cheap Royal Rumble tickets for tomorrow.

Finally, I'll have seen all five classics in person!.

Congratulations! Hope you have a great time! How much did the tickets costs for you?  I'll be watching this on monday and maybe they'll get a shot of you when they do the crowd shots.

Ok...this weeks episode...vaguely disturbing...I mean, commeon! seizures in you nuts?

Some spoilers came out on the 100th episode.  Read at your own peril

Hidden Text:

The Foreman/Thirteen spoilers for episode 100:
Thirteen is having trouble with her vision. It turns out to be because of a brain tumor.

Both Thirteen and House find out that Foreman switched the drugs. Thirteen gets angry, House tries to protect Foreman.

Thirteen becomes blind. House and Foreman operate on her, protecting Foreman and curing Thirteen. Taub suspects but doesn't want to know what's going on. Kutner figures it out and confronts House and later Foreman.

Foreman publicly admits to switching the drugs and is prohibited from doing more drug studies but he gets to keep his license and his job.

Taub is the one doing brain surgery on the PotW, House and Foreman on Thirteen. No Chase in this episode.

Cant really make any predictions without seeing all these, but I do know that Marisa Tomei did not deserve an Oscar nomination for that role

I don't think she has any shot at winning.  Adams, Henson and Davis all outact her in the drama department and Penelope Cruz gets the slightly off center/quirky performance usually nominated by the academy.  Didn't Mira Sorvino win an Oscar for Mighty Aphrodite playing a similar role?  Although, Cruz' performance is more dramatic in nature and less reliant on comedy.

I think Pitt will win.

I saw this the other day and thought he was great in it.  However, I think they might give it to Langella.

Anne Hathaway, "Rachel Getting Married"

Did anyone actually see this?  Does she deserve it?  I find it odd that Cate Blanchette didn't get one for Benjamin Button since she was just as central to the movie as Pitt's character.

#1758 Re: The Garden » 2008 NFL season » 885 weeks ago

Really, "your" team should be the one in your hometown or where you lived at one point.

Seriously, what if you're in near a town that has a professional sports team? How do you determine which team is your home team?

I've been a diehard Cub fan all my life, and suddenly after 2003, there was this explosion in "so-called" Cub fans, who jumped on board and loved the Cubbies, simply because they got within 5 outs of the WS in the 2003 NLCS.

I'll raise you one better: I've been rooting for the Pirates since 1990.  They haven't had a winning record since 1992.  GNR was still doing the Illusion tour.  So, if by some miracle chance of god they actually reach a World Series, and you see all these "fans" pop up; you just know those people are bandwagoners.  Oh yeah, the last time the Pirates were in the NLCS they were 2 strikes away and lost on a play at the plate when the slowest guy in baseball (Sid Bream) scored the winning run.

I'm not a bandwagoner just because I root for the Cardinals to beat the Steelers.  The circumstances dictate I have to pick one team or not watch the game at all.  In truth, I'm an equal opportunity hater rooting against 31 teams except my favorite team.

#1759 Re: The Garden » 2008 NFL season » 886 weeks ago

I'm rooting for the Cardinals too since I can't stand the Steelers.

However, this thread does make an interesting point regarding parity.  Would you rather have a league where essentially regular season accomplishments mean nothing (NFL)?  Or would you prefer a sport where the regular season holds some meaning (NBA)?

As much as I like some aspects of parity--quicker rebuild time for a franchise, genuine hope for say 75% of teams to have some kind of playoff aspirations--part of me wonders whether or not some of those Super Bowls would have been better had the higher seeded team won.  I can't even remember when the last time there was a one seed vs one seed in the Super Bowl; I think Super Bowl 26 WAS vs BUF might have been the last one.  I think the general goal of every team should be to make the playoffs since its pretty much a crapshoot now and the records are wiped clean and everyone is 0-0.

#1760 Re: The Garden » Had a medical emergency last night » 886 weeks ago

I have the same problem too.  The tests come back clean.  Unfortunately, the only option the doctor told me is to take MORE tests if it persists.  So I don't worry about it right now.
