#1791 Re: The Garden » Old WWF question... » 887 weeks ago

I think Warrior was just difficult to deal with and a general pain in the ass.  He returned at WM 8 and was scheduled to be in the main event at Survivor Series in the tag team match with Flair and Razor Ramon vs Randy Savage and himself.  He left like a month before the event.  Mcmahon was indicted in summer of 1993.  The changing of the guard really shouldn't be that suprising.  Hogan, Savage and Flair were all old, even though they left on separate issues.  Hogan-ego issues with WM.  Flair, I think he was unhappy and wanted to go back to WCW.  Savage--I'm not sure why he left.  I do think the fact that WCW had emerged as a player in this does account for some of the changes.  They signed Rick Rude and Jake the Snake in 1992 I think.  As far as Mr. Perfect goes, he was battling a persistent back problem that limited his in ring involvement.  I think  he had a high insurance premium which would have benefited him if he didn't wrestle.  The 1992-1993 upheaval hit its nadir when they had Hogan run in and win the WWF title in a ludicrous fashion at WM IX.  That was a horrible PPV as well.  Luckily Hogan left later that year.  The significant point of the change of 1992-1993 was the rise of the smaller wrestler.  Hart (Owen and Bret), Michaels and Razor (to the some extent) weren't the big well sculped guys favored by Vinnie Mac.  They had great work rates (Razor wasn't a full on drunk at this point, that would come later) and could go.  Didn't Sean Waltman aka 123 kid breakout as a star at this point too?  Unfortunately, Vince's big man fetish didn't totally go away--Giant Gonzales anyone?  If were looking at Spring 1993, does the fact that Monday Night Raw debuted during this time factor in here at all?  Anyway this is an interesting discussion that I hope continues.  I first started watching WWF during this period.  So this is a trip down memory lane for me too.

You win in the postseason by running the ball and stopping the run.  The Colts in their Superbowl winning year did exactly that.  They rushed 22 times for 64yds and allowed 167yds on 34 carries in the SD loss.  I always  thought that the Colts wining streak was a function of playing bad teams.  The divisonal round should be more smash mouth fun with TEN, CAR, PIT, NYG playing games next week.  If you like smash mouth football root for a BAL win because it will set up a bloodbath rivalry game with TEN.

Yup.  He had all this time to take care of this stuff and didn't do it.  It doesn't make much sense financially to rerelease CD with only alternate covers.  I'm not sure how many diehards will buy that.  I will only buy a rereleased CD if there is new material--new tracks or old demos of CD songs.

For those who are wondering, a DVDSCR has already leaked onto the internet.

I think NR is slightly overrated.  If you've ever heard the demo, the last two minutes of the song kind of wander. Luckily, the slash solos help pull it together and turn it from ok song to good song.  I get what war is saying as some of the synthesizer stuff can get kind of annoying whereas with TIL you can actually feel the raw emotions from Axl's vocals.

I disagree with SOD resembling NR.  If I were to guess, I'd say the one song faldors female friend hated would be either Scraped or This I Love.  Although If the World could be another choice.  I too am interested in what his friend's review.

Just out of curiosity, do you ever see Axl reuniting with original Gnr for purely monetary reasons?  Let's say at some point in the future he runs low on cash.  Now albums don't make money anymore.  So he's left with the tour option.  Nu Guns is not profitable as a touring act in the US.  Would he just reunite for a cash grab money tour?  Or would that go against his principles.  I think he might be faced with this decision a lot sooner than some of you might think.

I think people are complaining about album sales because of the amount and spent making the album.  It's simple business really.  Unfortunately, the "this album cost 13 million dollar to make" thing will always hamstring this album to some extent.

It's not my fault you set the standard at the wrong level for this album release.

This is actually a pretty interesting question.  What should the standard have been?  I remember reading a RS article in 2000 where CD is being compared to Physical Graffiti.

http://www.gnrevolution.com/viewtopic.php?id=2939  (link to RS article).

I never had those expectations though, to me all I wanted was a simple album made by one of my favorite bands while growing up.  Full disclosure:  I lost interest in the project probably in 2004-2006.  I found the leaks (the 2006 ones) in 2007 and was interested in the band again.  Most of the fans of this band aren't rooting for Axl to fail.  I feel a lot of sympathy for Axl and what he has been through.  However, some of these have been self-inflicted though and as a fan you really can't ignore some of the stuff.
My disappointments are twofold:  I don't particularly care for the amount of overproduction on the final product.  I prefer the basic structures of the songs on the demos.  The clusterfuck style in which the band is run and how information is released would be the other reason.  I think you and I are in agreement here.  The official website is a joke. (FWIW, I never understood why Gnr didn't give fans the opportunity to order CD online from the website.)  Flimsy excuses are given as to why things happen or don't happen.  Anybody remember Axl cancelling a tour in 2001 because he only just read about it over the internet.  I think the lack of professionalism is what irks people the most.  For example, if you release an album shouldn't you expect a video to go with that?  I don't think its holding to band to a superhigh standard to expect these basic things.

When Axl popped up to chat a few weeks ago, I found the timing curious.  At that time CD had sold poorly and he was getting criticized for not promoting the thing at all.  After he chatted on the forums, the subject went from disapointing cd sales to a rehash of topics involving Old Gnr.  He had effectively changed the topic.  He could have discussed these topics years ago, yet he chose not to.  Before anyone says there were "legal" issues regarding this--try to remember that Slash had spoke about these issues for years with zero problem.

Intercourse--I don't feel as sorry for the Nu Guns as you do.  After a few months or years of working for Axl, you pretty much know how its going to go.  He'll show up late for live shows and he won't be in the studio for large periods of time.  At some point you either accept it for what it is or you get frustrated and leave.  It's strange because now looking back Slash and Buckethead left the band for the exact same reasons:  Axl showing up late for the shows and not appearing at the studio.  Inversely, Tommy Stinson has stuck around for 10 years.  Of course the $250,000 a year paycheck surely doesn't hurt.

I do wish that he'd hire a PR guy to do the PR work instead of the Lebsesis' though.  Those two should NEVER comment on Gnr again.  It was easier with Slash and Duff in the band because those guys would do the PR work that Axl didn't want to.  Bumblefoot would be the obvious choice here with Nu Guns.  However, he didn't write any of the songs on CD (mostly written by 1997-2001 incarnation of the band) and it's kind of hard for fans to relate to that.

Unfortunately, I agree with you about this band being a car wreck that you can't turn away from.  Sometimes I feel as though I'm being a fun purely for "entertainment" purposes.  It seems as though Axl has done the "opposite" of what most other successful musicians have done.

I voted for Street of Dreams over IRS.  It's a cheesier song.
