#271 Re: Guns N' Roses » pink floyd - in the flesh vs OIAM » 643 weeks ago

Yeah i know i'm too drunk to place them apart, they're in the same verse and as a whole its just naive venom imo. I like the song but I find it embarrassing, Axls vocals and the music are fantastic but the lyrics are weak. I cant crank that song out and sing along and feel proud, it just doesnt sit right with me. I think thats what Axl was going for, to be controversial rather than have a real point. He was trying to get under peoples skin to create a furore, its like someone saying something really offensive then turning round and saying "I was only joking", its a cop out, Axl said it wasnt him it was a character he was describing - cop out.

The Wall was a concept album and it had paranoid and discriminatory themes popping up all through it, in the context of the album that verse wasnt shocking at all, it was all part of the theatre.

OIAM came out of left field and had no context, it was like it was just another Axl Rose rant from that scary band Guns N Roses and it rather than being theatre, it was genuine venom. I like the melody and passion of the song but I still find the line of immigrants and faggots spreading diseases uncomfortable.

Figured it was only a matter of time.  Luckily I was able to sneak in the full viewing.  I know I'm not the harshest critic, but I thought it was awesome!  Can't wait to see it again on VH1 and VH1 Classic.  I'm sure both channels will have abbreviated versions and not the full 2 hours and 44 minutes.

One note I had, and I'm probably reading too much into things.  But at the end of the show as they came out for the encore, Axl addressed the crowd and said they had to cut things short so everyone could get out safely and in time for the last train.  They panned to Ron and he closed his eyes, almost with a look of, "well if you took the stage earlier, we wouldn't have to cut the show short."  Again, I'm sure I'm just reading into things.  After all ticking in at just under 3 hours isn't exactly cutting things all that short.  But only PC was played for the encore.  No Patience, Maddy, TWAT, etc.

They were late as usual, but blah blah blah we've said it all before...

I caught this and watched this right up till Nightrain before UziI'maCuntSuicidal sabotaged it. I thought it was pretty cool as a whole, Axl sounded weak in parts but in the grand scheme of things it for a 50 year old Axl Rose he did an awesome performance. 14 Years was weak imo, but other than that nothing struck me as disapointing, I really enjoyed it. I thought Axl had much more power and consistancy at the show I seen live but thems the breaks, GNR never record their best shows. I dunno how I'd feel if I'd went to the cinema expecting a real slick production, cause it wasnt that, but as a youtube freebie it was good enough for me. I give it 7 out of 10 9

That sounds good.

Here, you'll need this to prise them from Axl's cold dead hands.

I can see the stag party being a disaster, our mates are the most unreliable and selfish people on earth, if theres money to be put up front for any kind of party, I expect all I'll get in return is a chorus of crickets. Unless I pay for it up front, then they'll all be there and "promise" to pay me back later.

Finally seen The Hobbit yesterday, I thought it was pretty good though I was glad when it ended, its a long time to be wedged into a uncomfortable wee cinema seat.

I thought some of it seemed a bit rushed, meaning that some of the performances and delivery of lines at times seemed a bit flat, like they just rushed through filming some scenes and did it in one take, whereas in the other films they would do them over and over until they got the one where the actor really put their heart into it.

I was disapointed with the soundtrack, it didnt really grab me or was as evocative as the past scores, in fact it didnt seem like a labour of love as what the other soundtracks obviously were.

One thing I was pleased about was, although the film doesnt follow the structure of the book, I'd say about 80 to 85% of the film is pure Tolkien, they've just expanded the story by using all the other information Tolkien wrote about that period in Middle Earth in the LOTR Appendices, The Silmarrillion and The Unfinished Tales.

The main change is them being hunted by the Orcs lead by Azog, that doesnt happen in the book, in fact Azog is killed in that huge battle between the Dwarves and Orcs outside Moria long before the events in the Hobbit.
During the Battle Of The Five Armies which happens at the end of book version of the Hobbit, its actually Azogs son Bolg who leads the Orc army.

I'll have to watch it again to really absorb it, I was nursing a hellish hangover when I seen it and I wasnt exactly fully compos mentis.
