Im not tryin to bust your balls Captain but, What if u told him why he was wrong and how u felt about it? See what Im saying?
I post on so many websites and u will have people who never add to a conversation, they will just say stuff like "U fail" or "STFU" or something like that.

I disagree with The Mole cause I think the song kicks ass how it starts. Also, the chorus has really grown on me and if u go back in GNR history, Axl has never been a Chorus writer.

Think about his biggest hits and the choruses.

SCOM "Whoa oh oh oh SCOM, who oh oh oh Sweet love of mine

NR doesnt even have a chorus, same for Estranged, Coma , Madagascar, The Blues,

He just isnt a writer that makes the Chorus the HOOK and THE part.

I think the chorus of Shackler's gets the message across perfectly.

I know it's a little late 'n all, but I'm gonna write down a more detailed review of the song, as I see it.

The intro (if you ignore the ridiculous distorted chord bashing the first two seconds) is amazing, signature buckethead. My only gripe with it might be that's it's very reminiscent in style of a lot of Bucket's stuff, but that's not really relevant to the general public anyway.

Then, when the verse kicks in, and Axl starts singing in that low, low voice. That is one of the highpoints of the song for me. The vocals are amazing in this one, the timing is perfect and the lyrics (although possibly overly simple) fit the song.

The pre-chorus is ok, but not great. Too Zombie-esque in the rhythm department and the riffs and fills over the B-chord are too uninspired to elevate it to great heights. But overall, I still like this part. The transition from the verse is too abrupt though.

The chorus itself is not good at all. It's bland, uninspired, messy and noisy. It's usually the other way around, but when the chorus comes on I start looking forward to the next verse. This is easily the weakest part of the song and kills it for me.

The solo, well... I don't like it, but I think there are some cool ideas in there. I usually don't mind the "sound-effect" style segments in a solo, but this one overdoes it a little bit. I miss coherence, and most of all melody.

The guitar sounds are not my cup of tea, except for the bucket interludes. I love the smoothness of his sound. Very well rounded (as it usually is).

So all-in-all this song is the best Rocker we've had from these guys so far (possibly followed by CD). Still some way under my own personal expectations. Overall, if this was the first song I've heard from these guys, I wouldn't be disappointed as it seems as if it is a good start and leaves room for the band to grow.

Sadly, this obviously isn't true. Bucket (a major driving factor behind this song) is gone, and we've heard a bunch of other (in my opinion lesser) songs before this one.

I'm still waiting for that ace up Axl's sleeve.

your review is fundamentally flawed and contrived, it is trying so tragically to sound pretentious but even fails at doing that, your opinion is invalid and you should apologise.

your post is fundamentally flawed and contrived.

How about instead of talking shit to the guy and running your mouth, U TELL HIM WHY he is wrong? I don't necessarily agree with all of his review but its at least honest and how he feels.

Id rather someone post something I disagree with then have some person just talk shit without having any sort of addition to the conversation.

To put it simply, out of all the new studio tracks we've heard from the new band (11 QUALITY studio plus Silk and CITR), there is not one track that I don't have some form of "issue" with. I like them and some I like a lot. However, they simply don't impress me the way SCOM, Civil War, Estranged, The Garden and Coma (to name a few favorites) did when I originally listened to those.

Agree. there are different kinds of music listeners though.

There are people who are more vocal/lyric oriented.
U have people who are about the beat and the music
then u got all around listeners that take everything in etc.

I am the latter.

Now if u are someone who just loves great lyrics, vocals, melodies etc. These songs are fantastic even compared to the old, lyrically, vocally, they are right there for the most part.

whats lacking is music.  I've seen some tabs for the leaks and the guitar parts minus the shredding are just ridiculously plain, bland and easy.

I was listening to my running mix again today while running and I was determined to put my finger on what exactly is wrong with the leaks.

I heard Message For You/track2 again and Estranged popped on afterwards.

With Estranged, u have so many changes, so much diversity in the music, amazing guitar fills and solos, the vocal melodies change, the style of singing changes, u have stops, u have breaks, tempo changes, the song builds..... it is epic wit so much greatness.

Message For You, weak horrible intro, piano music with simple guitar lines and orchestration thats pretty  much the same throughout followed by a solo that I like to call the CC Deville.

If u ever listen to Poison, CC is a one trick pony guitar player, he never serves a song he simply uses the solo to show off his wammy bar and speed but it ruins the tone/mood of the song.

With Track 2, the solo just doesnt fit the song and the song is the same tempo, feel, vocal, chord progression throughout.

Its almost like GNR recorded hours and hours of music and Axl went I like that on recording 22, lets paste that with recording 56 and make it work.
the songs just aren't very cohesive and they just aren't diverse like the old school stuff was.

Its like i hear people goin on about TWAT and its solo......... honestly, that solo is maybe and I do mean Maybe on par with the So Fine solo or something but if u really listen to old GNR and TWAT mixed in with old GNR, u would see that solo comes close but just falls short of truly delivering.

Sometimes the songs to me feel like Axl is playing dress up to disguise the mediocre guitar playing. U have Pro Tools induced choir type stuff, Movie quotes, trip hop drum beats all in the place where an awesome riff or solo normally would be.

I think Shackler's and If The World are definitely the two best songs. If The World is the only leak that for me sounds timeless, like its sort of Pink Floydish and I could hear that song being around for a long time.

Yeah, one argument I always field at HTGTH is:

"What has Slash done since leaving GNR"

And u know, it makes me sound Anti Axl and like a hater, but I have to ask them: "What the fuck has Axl done since Slash left"

I think people talk shit about Slash without knowing all the facts. U ARE GUNS N FUCKING ROSES and yet your singer wants to BE like other people.  Slash I think was/is way more secure with what he does, who he is and the style of music he makes whereas Axl wants to be Trent Reznor or some shit but the thing is, Trent can't come close to Axl.

I think Axl doesn't have a lot of confidence and he forgets just who the fuck he is. when u are as big as Axl Rose, u dont try to copy and do other people's styles of music. I havent heard any leak that doesn't sound like a rip of another Genre of music.

I love Shacklers but u can fucking sing Thunderkiss 65 or whatever that song is called over the music etc.

Better for me, just sounds like 3 songs pieced into one. maybe thats bad mixing and the ultimate final version will be different. Plus I am a melodic Chorus kind of person and Better's chorus just kind of lacks that Hook.

Also, I really really wish they'd take those Super Mario Bros bloop crap takin bleeps out of the breakdown part before the "I never wanted u to be so full of anger" parts.

I loved Better when it first came out, but after a few months, Its one of those that is already just worn out for me. I've been listening to Madagascar for almost 8 years now and I still love it. Blues RIR3 is still fantastic. All the other versions of the blues for me are subpar.

CD to me just is an ok song, IRS, I am actually liking it more and more with each leak we get.

If The World is awesome, Song 2, I love it, but for me, I wish it were more of a NR, Estranged type where it had some changes.

The song is just kind of the same riff, same melody the entire song with a little variation here and there but there are no musical changes really, no vocal changes etc.

Once again, Im not tryin to start an old vs new debate. I have a habit of doing that but its one of those things that u cant get a point across unless u use the old as an example.

The thing that really drew me into GNR was the diversity. How each song just had so much awesomeness packed into one song. Take Rocket Queen for instance. u havea an awesome intro, a great classic opening riff. A genius breakdown section and then the outro with the beautiful guitar licks/picking melodies and Axl's heartfelt, beautiful lyrics and vocals.

Estranged is like 3 songs in one but it all flows and never sounds forced the way "Better" sort of feels forced.

If u can listen to this stuff for what it is and forget about the old, its great top level stuff. But when i revisit the old...... it for me, and Im not saying everyone should feel this way, but for me, it just feels lacking.

oustanding post!

Its like I'll listen to a boot and I'll be all into etc, like SCOM or NR for example and then u hear a bunch of  just sour notes and it kills the whole mood.

Monkeychow, I've only been here a few days or so, but I can tell we see eye to eye on a lot of issues.

What u said about the guitar lines being like the lyrics. I've used that analogy 100 times over at HTGTH but no one seems to understand. Changing Slash's lines would be no different than VR doing a GNR song and Scott writing new lyrics.

Just because we are hardcore fans doesn't mean much when it comes to opinions.  I know James hates song 2, when others claim it's the best GNR song ever.  I myself don't like Silkworms and think Oh My God is just average at best.

Not everyone on the forums are hardcore fans, but almost everyone likes Shackler's... a lot.

I can tell you one thing, i have a lot of friends who aren't GNR fans for the same reasons dj's would bash new songs (Axl is a dick), but when i play them the leaks, they love them.  I have a friend who LOVES all that mainstream rock shit, but i gave him a disc of CD, he was hessitant to listen because GNR sucks, but then fell in love with Better, IRS, CD and Maddy.  When i show him Shackler's, i know he will like that one a lot as well.

The point is, hardcore fans don't kiss Axl's ass no matter what he does.  I promise you, if Axl had put out Libertad, i'd be tired of it too and not have any urge whatsoever to listen to it.

The leaks. Better............ God I hate that fucking song, IRS, Chinese Democracy, Rhiad, The Blues.... I personally never care to hear these songs again.

Message For You definitely hasnt had the staying power I thought it would.

Shacklers is amazing. I let my brother hear it and he is what u'd call casual, he only knows the hits and he fucking loves Shacklers.

Really the only songs of the leaks, I find that I dont tire of are Shackler's and Madagascar.  the rest, after about 2 weeks, I just dont have a lot of desire to pop them in.

I was listening to a mix today while running, and the leaks came on between Coma and Estranged and yeah.................. Im not wanting to start a big this vs that debate. But the difference was pretty easy to tell for me quality wise.

I was the opposite. I couldnt wait to hear them and I took Axl's side after his onstage rants. Thing is, what is epic and great to us, the casual fan may not share our enthusiasm.

Being objective, can you hear any leak that u can honestly say will be a smash sensation make u wanna puke everytime u hear it cause its been worn out so much hit?
Cause Im not sure there is anything close to that.
