I think it was announced he had AIDS only a day or two before he died.
Can’t speak for the U.S. but Queen were pretty big in the late 70’s as far as I can tell. Then they dipped a bit in the early 80’s and lost some relevance before the legendary Live Aid performance which catapulted them back back to the big time. They were a stadium band after that until Freddies illness.
That's how I remember it. The "Flash Gordon" soundtrack took them down a notch because the movie was so negatively reviewed. "Radio Gaga" brought them back into the U.S. charts, but they never really toured North America at all in the 1980s. The band's Live Aid performance was cut short on MTV, so Americans never got to take in the full awesomeness of their set.
Axl's support of Queen, including the Freddie Mercury tribute concert and his comments about the band following the release of UYI, did a lot to bring the band back into popularity, and the inclusion of "Bohemian Rhapsody" - a song that NOBODY played on the radio - in "Wayne's World" cinched it. They're bigger now, in memory, than they ever were when the original quartet was active.

Actually, it occurs to me that Slash, Buckethead and Ashba all have a keen interest in classic horror films. Maybe they should get together and do an album.
THAT IS AN AWESOME IDEA!
They could call the band Creature from the Black Frog Lagoon.

I loved "Star Wars" and "Empire" because they came out when I was a kid and showed me things I'd never seen or imagined before. "Jedi" came as a letdown in comparison but in reflection the non-Jabba and non-Ewok portions were good.
These latest films have felt like retreads of characters and scenes we've seen before, only less interesting. I've given up on them after "Last Jedi." What they did to Luke, turning him into this weird, bitter loner when he'd redeemed his dad in "Jedi" felt so false. I didn't see "Solo" and will be skipping whatever else comes out in the future. I have the DVDs of the classic and good memories.

Burt Reynolds was cool. All of my friends and I used to watch "Smokey and the Bandit" on cable. When I got older, I appreciated "The Longest Yard." Whatever role he played, he seemed like he'd be a ton of fun to hang out with and have as a friend.
He once said that he made a lot of foolish career choices but always had fun. May we all be so lucky!
