that is exactly the following...
"Shackler is the first single"
And if he's wrong, then for the 900th time he'll be proven an invaluable source.
I'm not nitpicking, just saying he didn't say it would be the first single. He said the band was hoping it would be the first single. Here's the exact quote.
The band are hoping to have 'Shackler's Revenge' as their first single and they are also hoping to have the new album out this year. I know this falls in the 'vague' category but is all I can give right now.
Is it possible the band wanted Shackler's as the first single but got overruled? Hasn't that happened with other bands before? I mean it's possible. I know you like to discredit Mysteron and say he knows nothing and all. I honestly don't know much about him, but I certainly don't know enough to jump on him for lying or misleading us. Maybe you know more about him than I do. I'm just going by what I read.
Anyway, it looks like neither Shackler's or ITW will be the first single. At least that's how it appears from here.

I thought we already knew nothing was "official" yet, at least regarding the album's release. No date has been finalized. Hopefully it'll be 11/25, but they better get moving if they want to reach that date.

I definitely don't think it is a good choice to introduce the world to the first original GNR track in a decade. If The World is a good tune, but it strikes me as the type of track that only the real fans can appreciate. I don't see it as mainstream radio material.
You're too late, they already introduced the world to Shackler last month.

A lot of songs don't appear on soundtracks. Most notable example would be Goodbye Horses on Silence of the Lambs. Song got huge and no one could hardly get it back then because it wasn't on the soundtrack and it was on a slightly obscure album.
Yeah, strange strategy to not release two new songs as singles. They can get a buzz and media attention without having to compete on any Billboard/Itunes charts.
Are there any TV shows that need a theme song? How about a commercial? Just thinking of other ways they can get their music out there. It is a little strange, but times have changed. Maybe this is just a sign of the times.

If it won't appear on the soundtrack, I'm guessing this won't be the first single either? I give them credit for getting songs out there without actually releasing any singles. They're creative I guess.

As James alluded to, I'm not gonna complain about WHATEVER song they choose as the first single. As long as it gets things rolling. I understand it's important to have a solid lead single (see "She Builds Quick Machines"), but I believe the rest of the material is very strong and I also agree that "If The World" is better than some of you are giving it credit for. My favorite of the 3 newest leaks.
Anyway, it's not necessarily set in stone it'd be a single right, or is it? It most likely will be on the soundtrack but they don't necessarily have to release it as a single. They could just throw it out there along with Shackler's and then release another song as a single. Possible?

I'm gonna resist temptation for now. Sounds like the songs aren't drastically different, so I'll wait to hear them in better quality at the very least. Can I let myself get excited yet?

It's interesting that this is making the rounds and the rumors being born out of sources that have no GN'R-bias.
Leads me to sway to it being 'truth'.
Something is happening, but me thinks if it's a Best Buy-only release, slated for Thanksgiving - some sort of announcement has to happen SOON for this thing to be happening. I don't see them just dropping it in stores (Merck).
Yeah it is interesting. If the rumor came from a GNR board, we'd have a "been there done that" approach. But someone from a Pearl Jam board or something of the like would have no reason to make up a story like that. Hopefully it's true.
