Re: Classic Rock - And the new Velvet Revolver frontman is…

The next issue of Classic Rock brings you the inside story of the Velvet Revolver split - CR being the only magazine to interview all 5 members on their last tour.

As the band audition new singers, we recently drew up a list of possible replacements for Weiland - a mix of inside knowledge, wild cards and wishful thinking.

We ran them past Duff McKagan - his responses will be in our next issue, onsale Weds 30th April.

Meantime, which do you think would be the perfect frontman?

Lenny Kravitz
For: A supermodel magnet; has mainstream appeal.
Against: Not dangerous enough; would give the band an 80s vibe.

Gary Cherone
For: Can sing a bit.
Against: Was, like, unpopular with Van Halen; would make the band more of an 80s proposition; is back with Extreme.

Justin Hawkins
For: Can write songs; can play key-tar; looks good on flying pair of gigantic boobies; needs job.
Against: Is too '˜comedy rock'.

Eric Dover (former Slash's Snakepit frontman)
For: Familiar to Slash fans. Not a prima-donna.
Against: Not big enough; would be a step back for Slash.

Donovan Leitch (Camp Freddy/Nancy Boy)
For: Superman good-looks; rock royalty (son of Donovan); cool.
Against: Could seem contrived, fake.

Wes Scantlin (Puddle Of Mudd)
For: Young(ish), available, has guested with Camp Freddy
Against: Could turn them into Nickelback

Chester Bennington (Linkin Park)
For: Knows the band; can sing and write songs; has that skinny cool thing Weiland had; sang Paradise City with Camp Freddy
Against: Already has a job.
Click to watch him play Paradise City with Slash and Duff.

Almost anyone who's been in Camp Freddy
For: Camp Freddy's like one big audition for these guys. Front runners would include: Abby Gennet (of Slunt), Brandon Boyd (Incubus), Brett Scallions (Fuel), Gavin Rossdale, J.S. Clayden (Pitchshifter), Perry Farrell, Robbie Williams. They could hire them all and have a travelling carnival.

Against: Robbie Williams is on that list.

Chris Cornell
For: Great voice; cool grunge credentials.
Against: Forging solo career. Just left another '˜supergroup', Audioslave - people will question commitment.

Justin Tranter (Semi Precious Weapons)
For: Male model looks; glam attitude; looks good in high heels; Kate Moss magnet
Against: Is he 4 Real?

Chris Robinson (Black Crowes)
For: Great voice, can write songs.
Against: Wishful thinking. Is already in band; bit of a hippy.

Travis Meek (Days Of The New)
For: Sober; has that grungey-thing; looks the part.
Against: Tried out last time around.

Hal Ozsan (Poets and Pornstars)
For: Good voice; proper rawk; no real baggage.
Against: Doesn't have that edgy, modern thing Weiland had.

Shooter Jennings
For: Would bring a gutsy, Southern rock vibe. Bob Seger-ish good-old-boy look. No pretensions.
Against: Girls wouldn't dig it.

Royston Langdon (formerly of Spacehog)
For: Rock royalty (married to Liv Tyler); has relatively clean sheet (Spacehog were never that successful)
Against: Spacehog were never that successful

Josh Todd (Buckcherry)
For: Hot to trot; in the eyes of many, he's the guy who should have gotten it first time around
Against: He's the guy who should have gotten it first time around, but didn't. Buckcherry have just had a hit album.

Ginger (Wildhearts)
For: Can write songs; much loved; down to earth, wild years behind him
Against: Has been in more bands than Weiland's had hot knives.

Linda Perry
For: Good songwriter; great singer; played with Camp Freddy; sober; lesbian; would be proper reinvention.
Against: Would just be weird; lack of penis could be stumbling block for some people.

Sebastian Bach
For: Groundswell of good feeling towards him.
Against: Weiland's 'I think he'd be perfect' comment; could make it a retro 80s thing; friends with Axl.

I agree, and I'm pretty sure I already said it in another thread, so I hate to keep it up.  Their assessment is probably pretty correct though.

Still, imagine a Matt/Duff rhythm section and Slash solo in this song.

I agree, and I still laugh when I see Cornell get added to these lists.

Cornell should make a public statement saying he has no interest so the speculation regarding him is halted.

Never been a fan of Shooter Jennings, so that would be disappointing to me if he got the gig. Linda Perry fronting a band of Izzy, Slash, Duff, and Sorum is what I would like to see.

By the way, that Shooter Jennings thing would never fly in Europe, there's literally no southern rock affinity over here. The last slightly southern sounding thing to be successful over here was "Achy Breaky Heart"... no exaggeration.
