Re: Dr Pepper: 'No apology for Guns N' Roses'
(Wednesday December 03, 2008 09:25 AM)
Bosses at soft drinks giant Dr Pepper have refused to apologise to Guns N' Roses for the debacle over their recent giveaway with the rockers' new album Chinese Democracy.
Executives refused to believe the band would release their long awaited LP this year, and offered to hand out free cans of soda to every US citizen if the record hit shelves before 2009.
The group released the album last month after a 15-year wait, and company bosses were forced to keep their promise.
Dr Pepper chiefs set up an internet scheme which encouraged people to register at the brand's website on the day of the LP's release to claim a coupon redeemable for a can of pop.
But the huge demand crashed the site's servers and left many fans without their vouchers. The scheme was extended for another day because of the problems, but lawyers for the band insisted the give away was not good enough - and demanded an apology.
And now the drinks manufacturer has hit out at the group, accusing them of ruining the spirit of the campaign.
A statement from Dr Pepper reads, "We are disappointed that GN'R's lawyers are turning a fun giveaway into a legal dispute. We simply commented on the delayed release of Chinese Democracy and openly encouraged the band to release it before the end of the year.
"Axl (Rose, frontman) even expressed support for our efforts earlier in the year. This was one of the largest responses we have ever received for a giveaway, and we're happy we were able to satisfy the thirst of so many Dr Pepper fans. We wish Guns N' Roses the best with their album."
Re: Dr Pepper: 'No apology for Guns N' Roses'
I don't blame them. They know a judge will laugh this thing out of court so they have no reason to hand out apologies. Dr Pepper was the only promotion GNR received this year.
This fiasco will actually make other companies keep their distance from GNR because they'll know when its excuse time the lawsuits will fly in their direction as well.
This never should have happened. If they truly felt the need to go after Dr Pepper, they could have at least waited a month or so while the album was their main concentration. Instead the album itself became an afterthought and they started licking their chops over this.

I agree, it's a fucking stupid move from the GN'R camp to do this.

Couldn't agree more.
Instead of bothering to do some shows or an interview, he wants to sue someone instead. At least they could have waited for a month or so and actually focused on what the fans are interested in. We don't give a flying fuck if we got a Dr. Pepper or not, we just want music.
This disaster is bloody embarressing.
