Re: Ash and airplane cancellations - in the thick of it (pun intended)
I got right in the middle of this mess. Well, my wife did. She left Tel Aviv on Thursday morning. I knew the crap was coming, and warned her. She wanted to go anyway, as Prague was closer to home than Tel Aviv!
Coming to Prague, it all got cancelled. I had been on nightshift, and talked to her feeling hangover like crazy.
Czech Airlines put her up for 2 nights for free in a superb hotel, but once they saw how things were going, they backed out of more support. Who can blame them?
So, by the looks of it, she was stranded. She got herself a bus ticket, departing Wednesday from Prague, arriving in Oslo 21 hours later. With several nights in Prague, she would be in for an expensive extra-vacation.
Luckily, I saw an add online concerning some people hiring a bus from Vienna, going thru Prague on their way home. I got on the phone and got a seat for her at 200 euro. It was the second to last seat. With some luck tomorrow morning, she will be on her way home. Finally.
It's all interesting when you're not involved in these things, but when they hit home...they're not very fun at all.

That sucks, hope she gets home ok.
Not to sound insensitive, but sometimes I just love when Mother Earth puts humans in their place. We're so fucking arrogant for such a puny little species camped out on a gigantic boiling ball of molten rock and metal
Was gutted to not find any volcanic ash on my van this morning, like the weatherman promised, I'm a huge geology buff and seriously into the workings of ours and all the other planets of the solar system. It would have been so cool to find evidence of the living planet on my doorstep. Gonna have to travel one day to see a volcano one day, I'd have such a hard'on

Hope she made it home okay I'm closely following the news as I'm supposed to be flying to florida on April 30th for a fortnights holiday.
Its just one of those things, obviously safety for all has to be paramount, but try telling that to your girlfriend who's been looking forward to her first holiday abroad

on a sidenote....I really wish all you foreign chaps could see how beautiful my street is right now. Maybe one of the most prettiest days I can remember. Azaleas and Dogwoods are in full force. Every color you can imagine combined with the deep dark green of Spring. My house is surrounded by 20 Oak trees....

She came home alright, but just barely. She got on the bus and they kept driving for hours. By Sweden, the second bus driver was so tired he fell asleep while driving. The bus drove off the road. Luckily, Sweden is pretty flat and the bus wasn't damaged. They continued on after two hours. Picked her up at 9am in Oslo. What a few fucking days it was.
After that I spent four nerve-wrecking days watching the ash cloud move, as I was scared my trip to England would be canceled. Luckily, the ash moved on or disappeared, and I happily arrived in London yesterday. In for a great weekend with beer, ale and warbirds at North Weald!
