Re: If VR Had Called Themselves GN'R Instead
What if Slash and co. had walked away with the rights to the GN'R name and left Axl in the dust? Could the band that ultimately was Velvet Revolver have emerged under the Guns N' Roses moniker and been accepted more eagerly by the fans and media as the real deal? Obviously, it's been an uphill battle for Axl in his using the name. Thoughts?

I think they'd be told how much 'they need Axl' all the time, just like now. Cause it's true. They'd get more bad press for continue as GN'R without Axl than they get now (although the more original members would give more legacy to them). The name and classics domindated setlist would sell their shows and albums better, and they'd have better options at record companies.

the only good thing that would come from that would be that we'd get to hear Slash, Duff and Matt ripping through more of the awesome GN'R back catalogue live
Re: If VR Had Called Themselves GN'R Instead
I agree with madagas. I think a lineup of Weiland or Bach, Slash, Izzy, Duff, and Matt could have kicked some ass. I'm not a fan of Bach's songwriting, but Izzy would have been there. I saw Dave as a bigger part of the problem than Scott or Matt. His tone sucks, I don't know what he brings to the table songwriting wise (though Get Out the Door was his I think). I think they could have made any singer work with Izzy because the song structures and guitar interaction would have been so much better.
They needed to be a guitar dominated band and while most of CB was, Libertad wasn't at all. Certainly there were other factors, but I see that as a big reason Libertad isn't as popular with people. I think Libertad actually has some very good guitar parts on it, but most of the time you can't hear it unless you're listening specifically for it.
Re: If VR Had Called Themselves GN'R Instead
It's difficult to say. I personally don't think Slash & Duff would've hired Weiland, if a re-launched GN'R was what they were attempting. Then you have the catch-22 of do you hire someone that brings something totally fresh (Weiland or Bach) or do you hire an Axl sound-a-like ala Tim "Ripper" Owens with Priest.
Personally I don't find Weiland, Slash, Duff, Matt and Izzy or possibly Gilby, anymore GN'R than I find Axl & Dizzy surrounded by a bunch of new guys. It's one of those things of being GN'R in name-only.
As far as new material goes, I prefer new GN'R ten-fold. By far.
BUT... as far as old material goes, VR performs the classic GN'R tracks much better than new Guns. Slash's guitar & Duff's bass gives it almost the same sound as when it was originally recorded.
I respected when Bucket was in new GN'R, because Bucket brought something totally fresh to the instrumentals, specifically the guitar solos. But when he left, it lost it's quality, and simply became a 'poor man's' real Guns.
That's not to say 2006-07 new Guns aren't an amazing live band. They're awesome, and I truely forgot all about the old guys, their show was so good. But still, if i'm having to critique, I guess I agree with everyone else. Axl needs them, and they need Axl.
My two cents.
