Weiland-Izzy-Slash-Duff-Matt is a very solid band. I can't stand Weiland, but I see why people like him.

I don't like him that much either, but he's been very successful as a lead singer.

Is that kind of like the van that the guys were driving when they killed Doc Brown in Back to the Future?

I respected when Bucket was in new GN'R, because Bucket brought something totally fresh to the instrumentals, specifically the guitar solos.

Hell yes to that.

Knocking on heavens door never sounded better. Nightrain as well. It was a totally new beast and I loved how they ripped thru it.

As for VR, the songs ain't good enough. A lot of it is down to Scott. If Scott had been given the songs that Axl was given in new Guns, he would have fucked them up nice and good. Doesn't matter how good it is if you don't have someone like Axl to write the melodies. Goddamnit, imagine what Axl could have done with a song like Slither.

In the end, VR fell thru like a ton of bricks. Contraband was decent, Libertad was a pile of shit. Mostly thanks to Scott.

Just like Nu-GN'R's music is mostly robotic and dead (instead of Slash's alive and 'sexy' tunes), VR's lyrics and melodies are mostly uninspired and repetitive, unlike Nu-GN'R's, where Axl clearly sings about something (except a few songs). Do the math.

It would possibly work if Izzy was in place of Kushner. It would have been like Floyd without Waters....not the best, but not bad.

That's my feelings as well. Put Izzy into the mix, and things change awfully quick. Hell, let Izzy write the songs and sing. Couldn't have been any worse than what VR became.

Regarding the thread title, it isn't GNR without Axl. Period.

Great post. Axl + Slash + Duff + Izzy + drummer = magic. Too bad there was too many chefs in the kitchen to make it work long term.

16  Yeah i fixed it. Thanks. 14

I really don't think anyone should call themselves GNR unless Axl is at the front of the band.  For me, it would be the same as Soundgarden without Cornell.

Never had that feeling when listening, ever.
