this just reinforces my comment that some peopel are "brainwashed" by the leaks....some people have listened to the leaks so much that the final product just seems off cuz its different from what you've come to know and expect in that particular song
for me i was never that enthralled with catcher but hearing the final mix i think its pretty awesome, somethign about it...amybe it seems a bit heavier and modern? i dunno, but I just like ron's tone more than what i remember of brian's tone on the song
I think you're going too far to call people brainwashed by the leaks.
For me, it's personal preference. It's not like I like Bucket's solo better because I heard it first, it's because I honestly believe it fits the vibe of the song better. Same goes with May's solo.
If it were the case that I wouldn't like new contributions because I have come to expect certain things from listening to the leaks, I wouldn't like the new stuff in CD, or the final mix of If the World, or Madagascar, or Better, or TWAT- but I think the final mixes of those songs all turned out better than the demos.

I disagree on the May solo, that solo no longer fits the song, as Neemo says it's a heavier song now than the 99 leak. Mays solo fitted it then but it would sound off in the final version of the track.

bigbri wrote:Shackler's Revenge is a perfect example. Bucket wrote it and probably played most/all guitars on it, then for some reason it becomes Ron's showcase. What you end up with is what most consider the worst song on CD.
this coming from a big BH fan who couldnt tell if it was BH or BBF who was doing the massive solo at the end of the track, but i do seem to recalll that you thought it was great no matter who did it....the long and short is that we don't know what the state of this track was at the time that ron joined the band and began working on it...for all we know it coulda just been nothing more than a rhythm/drum section when BH left and Ron fleshed out the track and Axl added vocals...if you look at the time when Beta came on to HTGTH and started ripping the fans a new asshole that Axl didnt owe them anything i think that maybe we can possibly get a picture when this track was completed....at least its a pet theory that i have...i'll give you a hint...it was after Bucket left
Axlin08 wrote:Problem is, I think no one can get a real idea for his ability, because all he's doing is copying material written by Bucket, the best he can. He does it well, very well considering Bucket's talent, but no one can really sit back and say the amazing BBF contributions.
quite frankly you are talking out of your ass here...we dont know what bucket did before bumble and what we do know that bumble replaced isnt the same thing bucket did...if you want to have an idea of Ron's ability check out his solo material...I have both Normal and Abnormal and i personally think they are both brilliant
Quite frankly, you're apparently not savvy in the leaks or reading liner notes.
I have practically a back catalog of leaks, all of GN'R material, recorded by Bucket, with NO contributions from Ron (confirmed by Ron HIMSELF), and the liner notes specifically state on these songs, written by Brian Carroll, and those liner notes give Bucket credit for those solos, respectively.
Yet it's re-recorded by Ron on the final album, credited to Ron as performed by, but STILL credited to Bucket as written.
So I know EXACTLY what i'm talking about.
In Ron's defense, nothing is better or worse, unlike some claim. But this is the definitive clusterfuck of CD's re-recording. What's the point in having Ron, Richard & Frank re-record identical parts to stuff written by Bucket, Paul & Brain, considering the fact the latter are still on the majority of the album? The only thing that stands out in my mind is the drumming on CD(the song)-final is vastly better than the leaks. Frank's definitve, and really only significant, contribution.
Like i've said before. The next album, unless it's just re-records of the CD sessions, and not recent material, will be what tells the tale on the 2006-07 era.
Re: Lars Comments on "Better" Video
axlin just cuz someone has a writing credit doesnt mean that they brought a completely finished song to the table....for instance look at songs that we dont have a demo with BH on
Catcher, Scraped, Shacklers, Sorry and This I Love...we have absolutely NO idea what BH recorded for these tracks and which of those parts were possibly taken off the track to make way for bucket....hell the tracks may be 100% complete up til the time bucket left and ron just added stuff on top...WE DONT KNOW....as for the amazing bumble contributions
i'd say he definately has some amazing moments on CD
another thing...we dont even know without a shadow of a doubt exactly what parts are done by which guitarist...some of the songs are so dense that its hard to distinguish where one guitar stars and another ends
It's not like I like Bucket's solo better because I heard it first
maybe not you specifically, but its hard to determine .... tink of all teh STP songs you know and love ..... now put scott singing STP tunes in front of VR....somethign sounds different. think of AIC with Layne....now listen with their new singer, what about blind melon? with shannon then the same songs without, orig gnr material done by the new band ... the list goes on, you set yourself up (me you whoever) by hearing a song done a certain way...when things are changed then you notice...same with the "splicing" that peopel complain about on CD...if you really objectively listen you cant hear where new material is added on top of old....you just know the leak like the back of your hand so you think you hear cutting and pasting
Re: Lars Comments on "Better" Video
Quite frankly, you're apparently not savvy in the leaks or reading liner notes.
no you're right i know nothing of the leaks...nor did i read the liner notes of the most anticipated album of my life which i've dedicated the past 5 years online following the saga as close or closer than many
reading liner notes is my favorite part of buying an album...its why i'm not a massive downloader like alot of people, i prefer to have the hard copy of the booklet in my hands and read it with a coffee or whatever....i didnt even download the booklet other than to share it with people of this community immediately after it became available through someone else, i didnt actually read it though until i had the damn thing in my own hand, not to mention the fact that i disected the booklet to add all the information to each and every track for the discography section here....
i never personally talked to MSL on the telephone either before he leaked the material to the online people (sarcasm)
so again you're talking out of your ass here, because i was closely watching as the material actually leaked....i was one of the ones who knew and had to keep things quiet before they happened...i wanst directly involved in any of the leaking but i knew the moment something leaked or even up to 2-3 days before

For what it's worth...
I love the solo on Shacklers.
I think that Bucket's solo on Rhaid is crap. Never understood why people talk it up like it's something really great. Bumbles is bad too, but it's better than the Bucket one. I mean, honestly, who could even say that Bucket's Rhaid solo is even close (in terms of quality) to some of Bucket's AVERAGE work? Buckethead is the bomb, but that solo wasn't.
And Bumble's solo in Catcher is pretty damn good if you ask me. Lots of emotion.
I honestly believe that Bucket is a great solo artist, but didn't preform well when confined to the GNR style. Not sure why.

I love Ron's contributions to the album as well....especially Catcher and Riad. There are Ron appreciators on this board, but as someone said earlier, we aren't as loud as the detractors.:haha:
I also love Bucket's stuff obviously and in a strange way think that the touring lineup should have Bucket, Ron, and Richard (or Paul). Bucket and Ron would be crazy together but I think it would work. Ron would do Robin's stuff and his stuff.

Rolling Stone reporting the mystery of the phantom new gnr video.
I wonder if the myth of the Better video will grow and grow like the CD myth did, and in a couple of years in the minds of GNR fans it must be the greatest video of all time that will bring about world peace upon its release.

I hear there's footage of Shaq in it, and that supposedly it's the most emotional video Axl's ever made!!!
