Re: Oscars 2009
I gotta stop watching season two of Party of Five and watch the rest of these films over the next couple weeks. Cant really make any predictions without seeing all these, but I do know that Marisa Tomei did not deserve an Oscar nomination for that role. Must be a very weak category this year.
I really hope M.I.A. wins the Oscar. Since all songs nominated are performed live, will be interesting to see if she even shows up since she is gonna have her baby at any moment.

I don't think she has any shot at winning. Adams, Henson and Davis all outact her in the drama department and Penelope Cruz gets the slightly off center/quirky performance usually nominated by the academy. Didn't Mira Sorvino win an Oscar for Mighty Aphrodite playing a similar role? Although, Cruz' performance is more dramatic in nature and less reliant on comedy.
I think Pitt will win.
I saw this the other day and thought he was great in it. However, I think they might give it to Langella.
Anne Hathaway, "Rachel Getting Married"
Did anyone actually see this? Does she deserve it? I find it odd that Cate Blanchette didn't get one for Benjamin Button since she was just as central to the movie as Pitt's character.
Re: Oscars 2009
I disagree. I think Tomei provided an added emotional undercurrent to the film and Rourke's storyline. I loved the movie and I think Tomei was really special in it. Wood's role amounted to little more than a bit part. A significant bit part, but a bit part nonetheless. As for WALL-E, animated films belong in the animated film category. Period. And can we please return to hand-drawn animation and stop spoon feeding kids this same shit over and over again?
The big snubs here, and there are unfortunately many, mostly belong to The Dark Knight. Where's best picture? Adapted screenplay? DIRECTOR? And The Wrestler? No picture, screenplay, or director (the brilliant Darren Aronofsky) for that either. Will Rourke win? He deserves to. It's hard to say, he's burned so many bridges in Hollywood. Not to discredit Penn's performance in Milk, which I found really moving, but I can easily see him winning and that would be a shame. Give it to Rourke, the underdog. Heath Ledger will finally and rightfully win, but only because he should've won for Brokeback Mountain and they snubbed him then. His Joker was a haunted, mesmerizing performance. Robert Downey Jr. was nominated for a fantastic but un-Oscar worthy performance because he's been so consistently overlooked they felt they owed him. Quite honestly, his Tony Stark performance was better. This is the way the Academy works. It isn't about quality, it's about politics.
And Springsteen not being nominated? Are you kidding me?

Re: Oscars 2009
If Wall-E didn't make it into best picture, no animated movie ever will. It was brilliant on so many levels.
How can you say that? The movie was terrible. Very weak storyline, and hardly any dialougue. That is unless you want to count "Wall-E.eee" and "Eveeeee." It was truely pathetic in my opinion and how it got nominated for an Oscar is beyond me.

Seriously A4L? The lack of dialogue is what made it so good - it connected people with a character that wasn't human, wasn't really cute, and didn't even speak. Those first 45 minutes or so without talking are the best moments in an animated movie I've ever seen.

quoted for truth.
not every movie needs dialogue to get a message through. i don't know if it's the best animated film i've seen but i wouldn't have been surprised if it got a best film nomination. i guess you either like it or hate it. there's no middle ground with it.
i hope heath gets his recognition, although it's too late now. and maybe van sant for director. the rest, i don't care so much

Re: Oscars 2009
All i can say is i hope (no bias here dudes lol ) Slumdog Millionaire wins at least 1 but it deserves more. Watched it last night and what a cracking film (means good)
Deals with a touchy subject, slum kids makin a livin (literally life) off the shit our governments should dispose of in landfill or by incinerator or plain old recycling, but find cheaper to dump on someone elses backyard.. Then how one kid ends up on a millionaire show and documents how through experiences growing up as a slumkid he came to know all the answers.. Very good movie..
