Re: Axl Rose Insists Original Guns N' Roses Lineup Is Dead and Buried
You don't need an extra bass player for sub bass, and the sub bass definitely wasn't buried in the mix.
Sub bass is mainly just to enhance the overall sound/feel of the music.
Not saying you don't know what sub bass is, but I have a feeling some fans see those liner notes and picture Pitman holding a bass guitar and kicking Tommy out of the way.
No you're exactly right. That's how I imagined it.
Two bass players doing the work, and it being mixed together, just like the guitars, drums, and keys.

Yeah, its not what a lot of GNR fans were probably thinking about when reading the liner notes. Basically studio techs and even various DJs are the suppliers of sub bass.
If Axl will ever stop talking about Slash maybe he can give us the details on the recording of Chinese Democracy.
Re: Axl Rose Insists Original Guns N' Roses Lineup Is Dead and Buried
A good example of this "sub bass" is I.R.S. While Tommy does deserve kudos for his sound on this, it is clearly being enhanced by Pitman using the sub bass technique. Listen to this track low on your comp, and if you have a good audio system or a killer stereo in your house/car, crank it up. Unfortunately Bumblefoot's wanking gets in the way of the bass on this track, but you can hear it. When you crank it up, that bass you're hearing and feeling(the proverbial boom) is the sub bass at work.
Another example(although a bit different) is what Cornell is doing on the song Overfloater. Shepards's tone on this is superb, yet Cornell is using keyboards to enhance the music in the track. Go listen to it. It aint Dizzy tapping the keys like on UYI. Cornell is simply using keyboards as an effect to sort of mimic the overall groove/song structure.'
Sub bass is used in tons of rap, electronica, hip hop, etc. Hell, you don't even need a bass player to use the effect.

We're obviously off the topic of Slash and 1996, but here's Overfloater if you've never heard it. While technically not sub bass, it achieves the same effect and is a better example than songs with a trillion layers of noise.

The article was edited at the request of del, they took out the bit about Robert John being on crystal meth.
They should have removed that other allegation, you know, the one about del being a music jounalist.
