Well, I thought it was time to do this since Metallica's return with Death Magnetic in late 2008. The title is pretty self-explanatory.
You can choose if you want to include live and cover albums.

there is something about the composition of justice, lightning and puppetz that is hard to top...DM is good but man against those others its not close...S&M is just amazing

S&M was a live album of a performance Metallica did with the San Francisco Philharmonic I believe. Very cool too. The symphony added a more gothic, almost hellish feel to the music.

didn't get around to listening death magnetic yet so i'll just do the other ones 
i think the black album was the last great album, the rest just had some good songs here and there but nothing extraordinary.
