Re: Steven Adler on reunion: "Axl is being a real selfish prick about it"

Original GUNS N' ROSES drummer Steven Adler is still holding out for a reunion with the band's "Appetite For Destruction" lineup.

Adler, currently on a drum-clinic tour of Australia presented by Allans Music, answered a number of questions to fans at the Sydney clinic last night (Wednesday, May 27).

Most queries had to do with Adler's relationship with GN'R frontman Axl Rose and whether Steven is hopeful of a reunion.

Adler didn't hold back.

"Axl is being a real selfish prick about it," he said. "Forget about the original band for a second. Axl's not thinking about the fans. The fans want a reunion desperately. It's really sad because we are all still alive and I know there's so many people that want to see us. I hope Axl gets it together soon while the fans still want it."

Adler praised Axl Rose for his past efforts.

"Axl is a genius and I still love the guy," he insisted. "Last time we met — about two three years ago — things were great. We shared a $3000 bottle of tequila and things went smooth.

"I really hope for the fans that we do a reunion tour."

Adler said he'll return home from Australia later this week where he'll record a track on the upcoming solo album by former GN'R member Slash.

"I'm so happy that Slash asked me to be on this album and I record with him as soon as I return home," he said. "After that I'm going to hit the recording studio with (ADLER'S APPETITE) to do a new album. We'll be touring the U.S. after that.”

On his first drum kit:

"My first drum kit was actually my mother's Tupperware. I couldn't afford drums when I was a kid. I bought my first set of drums off a friend at school."

On his favourite GUNS N' ROSES song:

"I'd have to say 'Nightrain'. So much adrenaline rushes through me when I play that."

On whether he still listens to "Appetite For Destruction":

"All the time. I can never get sick of that."

On getting kicked out of GUNS N' ROSES:

"It was devastating. My dream had been taken away from me. Saddest part was I had their backs; we were a gang. There were so many times when I had their backs. I used to get into fights at bars defending them. We we a gang. I guess the hardest part was Slash not having my back. We were childhood friends and that was the hardest part not having Slash's back when I got kicked out. But my grandfather told me a good piece of advice and that's time heals all wounds. I'm excited to have Slash back as a friend and to be working with him again."

Steven is right. This boils down to the classic "Axl is GN'R" argument, where Axl knows he can tour (or at least used to) as Guns N' Roses with a bunch of hired musicians.

With that reunion, Axl knows, despite owning the band name, it goes back to equal say. Even if they are under contract to him, the world is still going to view them as all equals, just like it's 1987 again. The only reason Axl's given the limitless respect he's given now, is because he's Axl Rose, and the rest of the new Guns are a bunch of nobody's. Tommy & Dizzy included.

Maybe not with Steven, but with at least Slash, Duff & Izzy, you're adding alot more chef's to the kitchen, whereas in GNR's kitchen right now, there's only one - Axl. And he likes it that way.

I agree with Steven, I hope it happens before they are so old that even reunion fans aren't interested. Do it now while you still are great on stage, and have a few more albums left in you.

if this was to ever happen, i see it as a more of a staged world tour...separate planes, separate rooms, they only see each other on stage when they perform, no one speaks to anyone, Axl's management speaks to theirs, etc, etc...

cold as fuck, no chemistry between them, just get it over with, cash grab set of shows...

definitely cannot visualize them recording anything together, to be honest...

Me either, that was just wishful thinking. There's this delusional part of me that thinks maybe Slash & Izzy could get together and come up with some great songs, and Axl goes in there and adds lyrics and vocals and it is basically recorded like the old albums.

But it's a total pipe dream. Axl isn't going to change his fucked up way of recording. Slash, Izzy & Duff would be cool with that formula, but Axl would never sign off on it.

Plus, you'd have to worry about the extra wrench thrown in, of Axl being willing to perform with Slash, and willing to record with Izzy & Duff, but not willing to record with Slash.

I actually posted this because I remember him saying that he was done waiting on a reunion.

Well, that and to see random people bickering with each other...

Hence the video from The Wire at the bottom because I thought that the discussion had finally come to an end on his part.

To be fair to steven though, when i saw the melbourne version of this show - he said some diplomatic stuff but people in the audience kept pressing him and asking questions like 'Don't you think Axl's an asshole?', "why can't you guys just deak with each other" and this kind of thing and pushing his buttons.

Of course the guy wants a reunion. GNR, and the original AFD line up, is one of the most successful acts of all time, the album is still famous and now a classic, and the gnr of his time is not only the most successful thing he could do in his lifetime, but realisticly one of the most successful outcomes most musicans could possibiliy hope for. So it's reliving his happy days, rekindling old friendships, worldwide fame, recgonised success, pleasing his fan base, throw in a couple of million - vs what he is doing now - which is Adler's Appetite and Clinics and stuff - he'd be insane not to want a reunion. From his side of the story its the only common sence thing to do. And, as much as I enjoy Chinese, there's a lot of people like Buz who I think would agree with him that it's pretty much the logical thing.

So i think he's done waiting in that he's not going to not do Adler's Appetite, and he's not going to shoot up crying about it, but of course if they called him tomorrow and offered him the gig he'd jump on it. So would I. And so would anyone!

For the record I think adler gettting kicked out was questionable as a decision. Appart from loosing the feel and all that stuff we've talked about - it just doesn't make sence. I love Slash and Izzy - but them kicking a guy out for drug use? What is that? Adler must have been fucked up big time. And i always understood that business has to be business and if he couldnt drum. But then he said something that made me think, he said "Def Leppard's drummer lost a fucking arm, and they found a way man, they found a way back". And i have to say i agree. Given some of these guys were adlers mates from childhood, and given they were also junkies themselves, and hense not exactly supportave of him cleaning up lifestyle wise, you have to question how fast he was kicked from the group without more warnings, treatment first. I know the delay on the album would cost them money, but like, is that it? You cost someone some money and your done, despite the friendship?

He pointed out a story from slash's book...He was in a house with Slash and Izzy writing use your illusion and ready to go, Axl was more than 7 weeks late. I'm just saying none of these guys were saints, they were a band and gang of homeless people, junkies, and rockers, and like to an extent - it feels like he was thrown out pretty harshly.

Anyway...regarding the comments about Axl...when I was there the crowd was really pushing him to say stuff, and he was trying to be nice, but obviously from his point of view some of Axl's choices are hard to understand and accept. I think on some real level steven is hurt by what happens to. Like imagine watching session drummers replace you in your dream band. Generally he was cool about Axl and just being funny when he made remarks in our session.

He said another thing that made me think. He was asked about the night he was at a strip club with Axl in 2006 or whenever that was. He told the story about the $3000 drink, and said they talked to dawn and renewed his friendship and he left at 10am feeling great. Axl hasn't spoken to him since. Think of that on a human level - of course he might make the occasional jest about the guys being pricks to him in a situation like that. He's lost his friendship, most of his fame, and the chance to make millions of dollars and do what most of the world wants of them. It must be hard for him to comprehend. He isn't an elequient guy. And I think he's just trying to express his confusion. He'll i've seen Axl call himself an asshole on stage lol...

For the record i also understand why Axl (as dexter) said he doesn't see steven much. That he holds the key to stevens happiness in his head, and so that puts pressure on Axl. I can see that if you are Axl, and you have your own idea of what you want to do with the band, then it would be difficult to be friends with steven who's whole life is directed at an imcompatiable result with your own plan.

The end of the day both these guys are human and have their own desires and faults and whatever else, and they do what they will.
