Complaint says top musician dissed over royalties

WASHINGTON — Which top-selling artist purportedly had his new single yanked from some radio stations playlists in retaliation for supporting royalties for musicians?
No one involved will name the recording artist, but his no-play treatment by several radio stations is alleged in a complaint filed with the Federal Communications Commission and obtained by The Associated Press. It claims recording artists are being threatened and intimidated.
In the filing, the musicFIRST Coalition says the top-selling artist — there are hints it could be U2 frontman Bono — recently released a new album and spoke during April in support of an effort to require radio stations to pay musicians royalties similar to those paid to songwriters.
Soon after, it said, "several stations within a major radio broadcast group notified the artist's label that they would no longer play his single on the air."
Representatives for musicFIRST refused to identify the artist.
U2's album, "No Line on the Horizon," was released in March with its leadoff single, "Get on Your Boots."
In April, Bono issued a statement on behalf of pay for musicians, saying, "It's only fair that when radio makes money by playing a recording artist's music ... the recording artist should be compensated just as songwriters are already."
Calls and e-mails to a spokeswoman for Bono were not immediately returned.
Other artists involved with musicFIRST include Don Henley, Celine Dion, Christina Aguilera and Wyclef Jean.
The filing also alleges unfair treatment of other artists by radio stations in Florida, Delaware and Texas. It does not identify any of the stations but accuses the stations of unlawfully putting their own financial interests above their obligation to serve the public. The group asks the FCC, which regulates the public airwaves, to investigate.
The controversy centers on legislation in Congress that would require radio stations to pay musicians royalties. Satellite radio, Internet radio and cable TV music channels already pay fees to performers and musicians, along with songwriter royalties. AM and FM radio stations just pay songwriters, not performers.
The National Association of Broadcasters opposes the bill, called the Performance Rights Act. The NAB says it amounts to a tax on U.S. radio stations and threatens thousands of jobs.
The filing by musicFIRST, made late Tuesday, also said:
_A Delaware radio station boycotted all artists affiliated with musicFIRST for an entire month.
_Before an interview, an artist was pressured by a Texas radio station to state on the air that the Performance Rights Act would cripple radio stations.

Interesting. I gotta admit I have noticed U2 not being played. AT ALL. New stuff at least. Haven't heard any new stuff in well over a month, & I listen to FM radio quite a bit.

IMHO if radio stations are forced to pay the "perfomers", then the songwriters will need to take a lesser cut. So in the end, it's' a wash.

Its on the verge of platinum here after its third month since release. Technically its not a bomb. It was just unable to sustain its initial momentum. I think one of the things that makes it so glaring is how huge the promo behind it was. It went from being everywhere to being nowhere.
Okay bomb was a bit harsh. It bombed in a similiar way to CD i.e. it sold well below expectations. One problem is Get Off Your Boots was a poor first single. It needs a new single to make it popular again and revitalise this album ala what M.I.A. did with Paper Planes.

That's a bullshit act. There's no way radio stations should be paying artists. If Bono's on board with this it's one time I'll say he's fucked. It's counterproductive. Radio's won't pay so they won't play, thus the band gets no free advertising and sells less albums. Even unknown bands should think this is garbage. All they want is to get their song on radio so they can be heard. This act is as if though the bands feel they are the ones doing radio a favor. Fuck that, it's radio doing the bands the favor. I dont' agree with this at all. The lack of common sense involved in an act like this makes it really hard to understadn why artists would even agree to it.

This same logic can be applied to the stance record labels take with youtube. youtube is this generations MTV, and removing videos because you're not making tons of cash is just completely idiotic. Its the absolute greatest outlet for free promotion, and in an industry that barely has any stores besides huge retail chains selling their products, they need as much free promotion as they can get.
That stage looks bad ass. Really sucks how they didn't add a SF/Oakland show. I'm basically just praying for a 2nd leg at this point.

Artists are completely retarded sometimes. There's this thing in Canada called Sound Scan(I think) and it's an organization that moderates what dj's play in clubs or at weddings or anywhere. They have a list of restricted artists which includes the likes of Metallica, Shania Twain, Janet Jackson etc etc. who have not agreed to have their music availabel for dj's to play because their mentality is that dj's are making money off their music and they should then be compensated for it. If Sound Scan were to come into the bar when I was djing and I got caught playing such an artist they could fine me big time. It's absolutely fucking moronic. Nothing is better for an artist than to have a dj in a club cranking their tunes yet they feel they're being cheated out of royalties. It's mind boggleing to think this is their mindset.
