I don't know folks. I've just checked out about three or four charts at billboard and didn't see anything there on M.J.

I'm confused. 10

He was a very talented guy who was surrounded during his peak years by the best in the business...Quincy Jones, Berry Gordy...he was a pop product no different than Madonna or Mariah Carey.

Madonno - wrote her own songs?  Mostly not. Great singer? No. Great Dancer? Pretty good.

Mariah Carey - Wrote her own songs? Absolutely Not. Great singer? Yes. Great dancer? Not at all.

MJ - Wrote his own songs?  Yes.  Great singer? Pretty good. Great Dancer?  Absolutely.

Mike was head & shoulders above those two. Talented, yes. One other thing, he did himself see the potential of music videos, and was one of the first to do so. He paid for the Thriller video himself, because the record company thought it was not a worthwhile investment. Name 1 great video that came out before 1983? Genius, I agree that myb going to far, but I'm not doing out of my way to disprove it either. Also, as for your OP, I don't think he became a joke after Thriller as much as you & I think he did. I think we just grew out of him. Bad has some great songs on it (Mirror, Diana, Bad) and if you look at the "Favorite MJ album" thread, quite a few people picked Dangerous. I'm shocked by that, but myb it's people younger than me who that was their MJ album as Thriller was sto me and Off The Wall may have been to people older than me. I was in about 3rd or 4th grade when THriller came out & was into it. By the time Bad came out, I was in 8th grade, & I thought it was ok, but for me, my time with MJ was done. Wish I gave him more respect in hindsight. Thriller is one helluvan album, that's for sure. And I'll tell you, 3 threads with probably close to 30 pages of posts on a Guns N Roses fan site for a Pop Star, that may not be genius... but he's the only pop star who could have come close to pulling something like that off after their death. Unreal. 19

Michael Jackson Breaks Billboard Charts Records

June 30, 2009 10:58 PM ET

Keith Caulfield, L.A.
As predicted, Michael Jackson is once again the King of the Pop charts.

Based on preliminary sales numbers from Nielsen SoundScan, the entire top nine positions on Billboard's Top Pop Catalog Albums chart will house Jackson-related titles when the tally is released in the early morning on Wednesday (July 1). Nielsen SoundScan's sales tracking week ended at the close of business on Sunday (June 28) night.

Jackson himself has a record eight out of the top 10, while a Jackson 5 compilation also finds its way into the upper tier.

The King of Pop's "Number Ones" will fittingly lead the pack at No. 1 with 108,000 (an increase of 2,340%) while "The Essential Michael Jackson" and "Thriller" are in the Nos. 2 and 3 slots with 102,000 and 101,000, respectively. Last week "Number Ones" was the only Jackson title on the chart, at No. 20 with 4,000 copies; both "Essential" and "Thriller" re-enter the tally this week.

I think Billboard has REALLY lost some of its relevance by overdoing it with these charts.

Michael sold MORE than the Black Eyed Peas, period...therefore it should be reflected as number 1 on the CURRENT chart because he has CURRENTLY outsold the Black Eyed Peas and enough to own the two and three spots as well.  Just stupid in my opinion and not only lessens (in appearance) his remarkable accomplishment but gives a bit of false "gleam" to the Black Eyed Peas.  They did NOT sell the most records therefore giving them the top spot is giving them a paper crown.

Yeah, I know. Sounds like a technicality. Anyway, it appears Mike will be in 9 of the Top 10 top selling albums. Unbelievable.

G&R folks, hey anything is possible. It can change within an hour from now or a day or two. Who know.
I do have some respect for M.J.
For me I thought he was an amasing talent when he was a kid with the J5.
I really didn't get into his solo career. Although I did admire the bass-line from Billy Jean. : )
