Re: The 2009 NFL Season Thread
LOL at Belicheat. What an asshole. Love seeing this shit blow up in his face. If you're going to go for it, give the damn ball to Welker!
It took me a couple days to accept the loss and move on. Once I finally did though and actually watched the replay of 4th and 2, it appeared to me that Welker was wide open on that play and would've had the first down with ease. I agree it was sort of an odd play call. Belichick was probably thinking the Colts were expecting the ball to go to Welker so he went with Faulk. It did appear that Faulk was the primary option, for whatever reason.
Re: The 2009 NFL Season Thread
That was a great game. I ended up rooting for the Colts, which will probably never happen again, but that 4th and 2 was shocking. I really thought it was just a ploy to get the Colts to jump offsides. I think it was a case of old Bill getting greedy, arrogant and trying to be a genius. Wow, a total back fire in the face. It was lovely.
Sorry, faldor.
Thanks. It was a crushing loss, I just had to keep reminding myself that it wasn't a season ending loss like the Super Bowl a few years back or the AFC Championship comeback by the Colts in 2006. For all the success the Pats have had this decade, they've had their fair share of crushing losses. And while this one hurt, there's still plenty of time to recover. It pretty much ruins any chance they had at home field advantage in the playoffs. That will go to the Colts unless something crazy happens. Can't say I'd be "scared" to play them in Indy again though. I'll take the opportunity if it comes to that. New England still seems to be getting better each week, which is obviously the goal. The only things that could hold them back are their lack of a (consistent) running game and pass rush. They've pretty much become the Colts of a few seasons ago on offense. All pass, no run. And they just can't get after the quarterback, which makes the secondary's job that much harder.
And one final thought on Pats/Colts. Early on in Peyton's career he'd wilt against the Pats. Belichick had his number and it showed. He was "in his head". Well, I think the tables have turned. I think it's Peyton who is now in Belichick's head. He's been going for it on 4th down against him for years now because he fears the hell out of giving him the ball.
And for the record, I obviously did not agree with the decision to go for it on 4th and 2. BUT, if they were going to go for it they should've at least run the ball on 3rd and 2 to force Indy to take their last timeout AND the Pats shouldn't have burned their last timeout themselves. Just bad clock management down the stretch leading up to 4th down. AND, the Pats left too many points on the field yet again. Maroney's fumble at the goal line, Brady's INT in the endzone, settling for FG's instead of getting 7. You just can't do those things if you expect to beat the Colts. So while the 4th and 2 stands out as the reason the Pats lost that game, it was far from the only reason.
I expect the Pats to bounce back this week and crush the Jets. Otherwise I'll be depressed for another week.

Re: The 2009 NFL Season Thread
My Sunday recap: Bills break my heart again. Indy got a scare but now Baltimore's playoff hopes are in big trouble. Browns are truly horrible if they can blow a 24-3 lead against Detroit, wish I could've seen that game though. Steelers lose in a shocker, which buys the ever-collapsing Broncos some more time and gives the Bengals a break for losing to Oakland. I really think the Chargers could win a couple games in the playoffs, watch out for them. And Cutler is not very good.

Notes:
I'd hate to see Lovie Smith fired, which is what a lot of people are saying. The Bear's problem isn't with him. Chicago's big needs are at saftey, WR and another RB. If they have a chance for T.O. next year they need to take him. And draft Mike Williams if he's still around by the third round. Devin Hester is NOT a wideout, let alone your #1 reciever. They should also think about Larry Johnson to compliment Matt Forte, or snag Javaris James in the draft. Cutler isn't going to win this on his own.
Mark Sanchez... I'm actually starting to feel sorry for him.
Mathew Stafford. He's going to end up being a really friggin good QB.
Eric Mangini... will be looking for a new job at the end of the year.
The Cowboys... They are who I thought they were!!!
I'm still going with the Vikes all the way.

He should have been fired years ago. He is the reason they didn't win at least one Super Bowl during his tenure, and they actually should have went to several. Had a domininating defense, a great running game, receivers good enough to get the job done, and all they needed was a QB that could simply manage the game and not fuck things up. Instead of zeroing in on Orton like he should have, he gets obsessed with Grossman which literally destroys the franchise.
Fuck Lovie and the sooner he is gone, the better.

Re: The 2009 NFL Season Thread
Firing coaches because they got you to a Super Bowl is dumb. They've been pretty successful during his time there, and have made the playoffs a couple times. You don't fire coaches who can get you into the playoffs, or you risk not getting there for the next 10 years.

Thoughts:
Jay Cutler is skilled but inconsistent. A headcase.
Lovie Smith is average. He'll get you to the playoffs every 3 or 4 years. I think a team can do better, but as CC said, you can do worse. Same as the guy in Cinci, win this year, lose next year.
Mangini will be out of work for a while. Should probably look to go to college to coach. I doubt he'll get an NFL gig, even doubt he'd get a coordinator gig.
The NFL is the Have's, the have nots; and the awfuls this season. There's a huge disparity between the ends of the spectrum, but most teams are in the middle.
What Stafford did took stones. HIs left shoulder was banged up but he was ok because "He doesn't need it to throw" is pretty good stuff. That's old school.
Cowboys are bad. Speaking of which I am so sick of Jimmy Johnson always on the pre-game show picking the COwboys & talking about how good Romo is. The Romo show is over. He's at best a marginal QB. Like a Trent Dilfer if he's lucky. He's not terrible, he'll probably remain in the league for a couple years but come on. He's far from the Troy Aikman the NFL wants him to be. And Aikman wasn't even that good, but he won games and kept them in them, he didn't lose games very often.
December should be a good month.

I agree with most of this but I'd add an another OL lineman to the list too. I don't think the Bears have a pick in the first two rounds (traded away for Gaines Adams and Cutler). Mike Williams is the Syracuse WR who just quit the team after he got caught in a casino, right? I'd stay away from him. Matt Forte regression has been one of the keys in the Bears disappointing season, as I can't blame it all on the OL.
Eric Mangini... will be looking for a new job at the end of the year.
His tenure in CLE is approaching Rich Kotite level. I gotta admit though it was kinda entertaining how they lost in DET by committing a PI on the last play of the game and giving DET one final untimed play. And DET scored a TD on the gift. His team (CLE) hates him for a variety of reasons too.

He reminds me of Jeff Fisher, with above average talent he excels. The issue is who are they going to hire to replace him-I guess they could look at the available coaches. I didn't get the Rex Grossman fascination either.

I think you're underating Aikman here: he was very accurate and precise especially in clutch games. I remember the play in 1992 NFC Championship (the pass to Alvin Harper) that sealed the game and sent DAL to the SB. I think they ran the ball a lot and his stats weren't as good as they should have been.
I've never believed in the Romo hype as well. Look it's a nice story and he's an ok player. But the guy has not delivered in the 2nd half of the season or the playoffs. I think his OL is pretty average too. Interesting to see if a WC comes from the divison and who actually wins this. I think the Giants have a shot after looking dead for a month.
But hey the Titans won and I'm very happy.

Ron Rivera is the reason the Bears lost the SB. And he was fired right afterwards. I remember watching that game and it was one of the worst defensive coached games I've ever seen. Rivera was even high on the list for several headcoaching jobs. That SB ended all that.
I understand why Lovie tried to stay with Grossman. He WAS their QB of the future. And helped win games that got them to the SB. Lovie gave him his shot and supported him the way a good head coach is supposed to with a number 1 drafted, franchise QB. Grossman blew it. Not Lovie.
And Orton is doing good now because of a great Denver O-Line, great running game and WR's. I remember him stinking up the place several times in Chicago. Orton was never as great as people are making out now.
