Re: Memo puts WGN news staffers at a loss for words
As a copy editor and grammarian, I agree with a lot of this. Broadcast news is some of the worst journalism out there. It might seem weird to issue a list like this, but look at those words and ask yourself, "Who besides broadcasters talks like that?"
Other things, like "completely destroyed" or "close proximity" or "fatal death" are just dumb and wrong. All deaths are fatals, dumbfuck.
Re: Memo puts WGN news staffers at a loss for words
But some of this is impossible to eliminate!! "Officials" "Motorist" "Sources say". 50% of it is neccesary to the story. Instead of motorist should they say "A person driving a car was killed today"?!

Dubbaya when you mean double you
I interned and worked at a radio station years ago. That one drove my Program Director crazy. He also hated the way people constantly mis-use amateur and professional.
Reading the whole thing made me think of this for some reason.

I was listening to a podcast today where they made the point that the word "fascist" is thrown around on the internet as often as "lol". Add that to the list.
