Re: The 2009 NFL Season Thread
Campbell found out about McNabb trade from reporter
By Doug Farrar
Generally speaking, players would prefer to learn about trades that affect them from their actual team '” that way, the team can do whatever damage control is necessary and assure the player in question that he's still a crucial part of their plans. The truth may be altogether different, but damage control isn't always about the truth.
What current (soon-to-be-former?) Redskins quarterback Jason Campbell(notes) now knows is that his team didn't think enough of him to let him know when they dropped the hammer on the Donovan McNabb(notes) trade. Campbell, who's been Washington's primary quarterback since 2007, found out about the trade when he got a phone call from John Keim of the Washington Examiner just after the deal was consummated.
Me: Did you hear about what happened?
Jason: What?
Me: The Redskins traded for Donovan.
Jason: Really? Ummm ... I didn't know that, man.
Me: I'm sorry I had to be the one who told you. I can't believe they didn't tell you.
Jason: No, that's the first I heard of it. ... I'd better go call my agent.
When I called back later, it went to voice mail. His mailbox was full.
Campbell has a first-round tender on his head that he hasn't signed, and that the Redskins will most likely rescind. According to ESPN 980, several teams are interested in Campbell's services '” the Bills, Raiders, Panthers and Jaguars (plus an "unknown team") are reportedly in line to make offers.
Though his performance in Washington was far from elite, it's also fair to say that Campbell never got a fair shot. He dealt with different offensive coordinators and a declining offense as the Dan Snyder/Vinny Cerrato "brain trust" mowed the offense down with a series of questionable moves. A new start would be best for all involved, and Campbell will most likely get it.
At this point, he's probably just hoping that when he is traded, he won't have to hear about it first from a reporter.

Re: The 2009 NFL Season Thread
Vick's status is the same as it's been for his whole career: extremely mediocre. He's 2nd string now, might get a few more snaps, but there is no point in his career where he was a better than average QB. Kolb blows him out of the water, I'm sure. His only opportunity to start anywhere would be a franchise that mights bad decisions regularly - mainly Oakland, Buffalo, or Jacksonville.
I don't know about Campbell. I hate to knock him because he had a terrible line in front of him, but the Bills line is even worse. He wouldn't be able to win any games in Buffalo that Edwards wouldn't win. Bills need a line and a consistent run game, which they are slowly getting with Fred Jackson. They also need a legitimate blitz, run tackling (better OLBs), and a better 3rd down defense. It's all a mess and Campbell can't fix it. He'll just lose a few more years of his career in another situation that's out of his hands.
Re: The 2009 NFL Season Thread
I got a twitter response from Chris Mortensen from ESPN, he says its more likey the Bills are going OT for their #1 pick in the draft. Maybe Trent Edwards will have a real chance this year. If they had big balls they'd draft Dez Bryant and go after a OT in the 2nd-4th rounds.
Re: The 2009 NFL Season Thread
Makes sense. Trent Williams, Brian Bulaga, Anthony Davis or Bruce Campbell--one of those guys will be there. Williams will probably be gone though probably to SEA, KC, OAK. Bulaga might only be a RT tackle though. Campbell is the "upside" guy as he ran the fastest time for an OT at the combine. I haven't really read/heard anything negative on Davis though.
I don't see all the teams from 4-8 taking tackles though. Someone will take Eric Berry before that and there's always the OAK surprise pick. WAS seems locked in on Okung.
Re: The 2009 NFL Season Thread
The Pittsburgh Steelers traded troubled wide receiver Santonio Holmes to the New York Jets for a fifth-round pick in next week's NFL draft, sources confirmed Sunday night.
ESPN 1050 in New York first reported the story. Holmes was contacted late Sunday and told that he had been traded to New York, sources said.
Holmes is facing a civil lawsuit in Florida from a woman who claims he threw a glass at her, cutting her above the eye, in an Orlando nightclub. The police also have been investigating the woman's claims. Holmes denies hurting the woman, and a witness has since taken responsibility for tossing the glass, according to Holmes' lawyer.
The player has run into trouble before this offseason. He was cited for marijuana possession, a misdemeanor, in Pennsylvania in 2008. The Steelers made Holmes inactive for the game following the incident and he subsequently apologized. In 2006, he was arrested on a domestic violence charge in Ohio, but that charge was later dropped.
In four seasons in Pittsburgh, the 26-year-old Holmes -- the MVP of the 2009 Super Bowl -- had 235 catches for 3,835 yards and 20 touchdowns.
In New York, Holmes gives quarterback Mark Sanchez another big-time target to throw to in an offense that already had Braylon Edwards, Jerricho Cotchery, promising tight end Dustin Keller and recently signed running back LaDainian Tomlinson.
Information from ESPN.com senior NFL writer John Clayton, ESPN.com AFC East blogger Tim Graham and The Associated Press was used in this report.

What the story doesn't say is that Holmes is likely to be given a 4 week suspension for a positive drug test(s)/ substance abuse violations. Still a 5th rounder is real cheap for a player of his calibur.
Luckily for the rest of the AFC, these bring in a bunch of big names in the offseason and hope to make a Super Bowl run plans almost never work. I'm not convinced that LT is an upgrade to Thomas Jones as well.
I like to rag on the Steelers but as long as their defense is still dominant they'll be in every game. This is assuming that Rothlesiberger doesn't miss a lot of time.
