Re: Oil giant BP concedes Gulf spill is bigger than estimated
By Rick Jervis, USA TODAY
VENICE, La. '” Oil giant BP conceded Thursday that
the Gulf of Mexico oil leak is larger than it
originally estimated, adding more worry as portions
of the massive spill began trickling ashore for the
first time.
Mark Proegler, a BP spokesman, said workers are
capturing about 210,000 gallons a day '” the total
daily amount the company and the Coast Guard have
estimated is gushing into the sea '” but some is still
escaping. He would not say how much.
Proegler said the figure has always been just an
estimate because there is no way to measure how
much is spilling from the well.
Tentacles of the oil spill were seeping Thursday into
Louisiana's lower marshes.
Some of the crude seeped into the Loop Current, a
fast-moving current south of the well that could
swing the oil east toward Florida's coastline, said
Jane Lubchenco, head of the National Oceanic and
Atmospheric Administration. But she said only a
small amount of oil is entering the current and will
likely break down by the time it nears Florida.
"The bulk of the oil on the surface is still far away
from the Loop Current," she said.
Crews have been struggling for nearly a month to
cap the well that began gushing oil following last
month's explosion and sinking of the Deepwater
Horizon rig about 50 miles offshore. The downing
of the rig killed 11 workers and sparked an
ecological emergency in the Gulf.
Oil pushing into marshes ratchets up the urgency
and marks the start of a complex cleanup effort, said K
urt Fromherz, a spokesman for Plaquemines Parish,
who toured the oily marshes with parish leaders and
Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal.
Re: Oil giant BP concedes Gulf spill is bigger than estimated
Yeah this is a disaster of biblical proportions. Sickening how its turned into a political game. Liberals making fun of Palin's "Drill, baby, drill" remarks while repubs mention how Obama himself supports offshore drilling.
If Los Angeles and New York went up in a nuclear furnace, people wouldn't talk about the millions dead. They'd bitch about Obama being soft on defense or bitch about Reagan not funneling enough money into SDI....
The partisan bickering has to stop. This country is a virtual pit of quicksand while we all laugh and run in place.
Re: Oil giant BP concedes Gulf spill is bigger than estimated
It only takes a quart of oil to make 250,000 gallons of water toxic. Imagine what this is doing. It's being kept quiet because the reality is almost too much to handle.
Let's say they can't stop it. Which I assume they will. But if they can't, all ocean life will be killed. That's where the food chain begins. Connect the dots for what happens next.
Re: Oil giant BP concedes Gulf spill is bigger than estimated
I've been curious how much oxygen supply in the world comes from the Gulf. Obviously it's not the Pacific basin, but will there be any effect on the air we breathe, especially those like myself which live adjacent to the Gulf.
11 dead doesn't begin to compare to the environmental disaster unfolding. It's life-changing. This is like 9/11 for the environment. Unlike 9/11, we won't realize it for years after.
The point is 11 workers ARE DEAD from this disaster, and BP's still having to worry about containment.
Those men were people, and they and their families deserve justice and closure. I hope it's not swept under the rug, due to the larger issue at hand.

Yeah, nobody talks about the 11 dead workers....
We've got to worry about the "environment"
I'm more worried about the crippled fishing industry, which will affect the ability to live for thousands of people on the coast.
I've heard the word "homicide" thrown around to describe the 11 dead workers. When you consider that BP basically cheaped out by using saltwater instead of drilling mud in the first place, perhaps that word isn't as hyperbolic as it might seem on the surface. They put those people in danger just so they could cut corners and make more profit. It backfired because now they not only caused the death of the 11 workers, they caused a huge blowout and loss of their own oil as well as massive punitive lawsuits for the environmental damage they are causing. They're pretty much ruining the fishing industry in the Gulf.
Somehow I wouldn't be surprised if BP becomes a pariah in this country. Go ruin someone else's country, ya bunch of cheapskate pricks.
