Re: The World Cup 2010
USA got no good strikers. They suffered from it. Donovan is world class, but who else?
More on England today: I'm very optimistic. Norway ain't there, Sweden ain't there, Denmark ain't there and Scotland ain't there. I support England like it's my home country now.
I think they can beat these Krauts. Just lost their striker due to injury, Ballack nowhere to be seen, Shweinsteiger doubtful. If there's a chance, this is the one. I actually think they'll pull through even if it goes to penalties. Statistically they should do that.
I'm very hopeful.
Not for Argentina in Quarter finale, but at least for this mediocre German team.
2-0 England. Rooney and Lampard scoring.

So ermmm... This is your first real football tornament?
Re: The World Cup 2010
Donovan plays for Everton. That's not world class that's just a good football player. This is a young German team and they are missing the guy that makes their midfield tick (Shweinsteiger) but they can still destroy England. The German team is, and always has operated like a well oiled machine. If this goes to penalties we're out. Most teams would be out. Germany are the masters of the penalty shoot out, they've never lost one at the World Cup.

Nice try son, but I've been watching WC's and European championships since 1990.
Anyway...
That was a mess.
Couldn't believe what I was seeing. England falling on their arses after just 20 minutes time and then amazingly enough, picking up the pieces and getting 1-2. Then, the game-changing moment when Lampard should have gotten 2-2. Going to half time with 2-2 is different than 1-2, starting to chase that equalizer instead of being on a roll after a superb pick up from being 0-2 down.
England did well for the first parts of the second half, but were then raped by a superb counter-attacking Germany. Shouldn't have been like that, not if it was 2-2. 1-2 made England chase and Germany play the game they really wanna play, a counter attacking football style.
Doing it like that, Englands mediocre players like Barry, Johnson, Upson (why not play Dawson?) stood absolutely no chance. To see Ozil run away from Barry was humiliation. To see Rooney stroll around in the German box like a junior player was a disgrace. To see Fab play Gerrard on the wing was a total failure. To see him replace Milner, who was the only one creating chances on the only weak Germany side with Wright-Phillips made me laugh. To put Heskey on in order to chase a goal made me not sure whether to laugh hysterically or cry.
We can all conclude that England were shit. They don't deserve a semi final.
But, they could actually have managed to win that Germany match. With 2-2 at half time, the Germans would have had a major mental blow to their confidence. England could have played their game instead of leaving room in the back for Upson to fuck up at every chance he got. It could actually have gone their way.
But in the end, they were shit and Argentina would have won anyway. Not that I'm very impressed with them either.
And, in the following years, more of the same. Premier League filled with foreigners, and an English mentality of that "bulldog" style. "Pull up your sleeves and get stuck in" deal that doesn't work. A couple of good players in Walcott, Rooney etc, and the rest are mediocre West Ham players making a fool out of themselves getting stressed because their country thinks they can win the tournament.
Better start re-thinking how to bring new talent up from the younger ranks, because this won't get better any time soon. Might even start to call Erikson's time as the "golden age" of English national football.
Re: The World Cup 2010
OMG as if we (Netherlands) beat Brazil. I thought this was the end of the road for sure, Brazil was seemingly an unbeatable opponent. I am in disbelief right now, and I'm sure there are a few Brazilians that can't believe it either... on to the Semi's
Re: The World Cup 2010
Haven't followed the World Cup at all since the US lost. BUT, these 2 stories piqued my interest a bit.

Paraguay may have been eliminated from the World Cup by Spain, but their biggest fan is going to reward them for their great effort. Larissa Riquelme made headlines after saying she would streak down the main street in Asuncion naked if Paraguay won the World Cup. But Spain ousted Paraguay 1-0 behind a David Villa goal. So no stripping, right? Wrong.
Riquelme has decided to go through with it anyway. "It will be a present to all of the players, and for all the people in Paraguay to enjoy. They tried as hard as possible and gave it their all on the field.", she said.
Paraguay's hottest fan has been quite a topic of conversation with her pledge and her skimpy outfits. Argentina coach and soccer legend Diego Maradona had made a similar promise, but oddly no one was quite as excited about that.
She had one sponsor on her chest during Paraguay's matches. I wonder how many more she'll have on the rest of her body? She's going to make some serious cash and please an entire nation (maybe world) in the process.
And, everyone may want to start following this girl on twitter AND cheering for the Netherlands.

In a year already featuring odd World Cup promises, porn star Bobbi Eden appears to have outdone her competitors. The Dutch erotic actress wrote on Twitter that she "will give a BJ to all my followers" if the Netherlands wins the soccer tournament this weekend.
Having vanquished Uruguay in the semifinals, the Netherlands is just one win away from potentially triggering an oral sex extravaganza. According to the bizarre tweet, several fellow actresses could join the the festivities. Eden currently has more than 23,000 followers.
Eden is not the first woman to make an erotic oath during the 2010 World Cup. Gorgeous lingerie model Larissa Riquelme promised to run naked through the streets of Paraguay if her team won the tournament. When the Paraguayans were eliminated in the quarterfinals, it seemed that the South American beauty's vow would not be realized. However, Riquelme has decided to run nude after all, as a "present" to Paraguay's soccer players.
Re: The World Cup 2010
What is soccer?
That's pretty much what 99.9% of Americans would say. The sport just doesn't translate well with American audiences. Every few years they try shoving it down our throats but the public immediately pukes it back up. You're old enough to remember the 1994 fiasco. ESPN forced that garbage on everybody and there were a ton of sponsors. It backfired big time. Ratings went way down, even on non soccer programming. Its because the loyal sports audience(including me) changed the channel because they knew that soccer would eventually get mentioned regardless of the sport being discussed.
You'll never see a blitz like that again because no one is willing to lose that much of the audience and of course money.
The only time(and I do mean ONLY time) the American public cared about soccer was the 1999 womens World Cup. It wasn't because they cared about soccer, it's because everyone and their grandma wanted to fuck Mia Hamm so they tuned in. I will give props to them because it was promoted flawlessly. They knew pussy is what was selling it so pretty much just embraced it and went with it. Once the Hamm craze died down, we the people went back to not giving two shits.
They overplayed their hand by thinking people would keep caring and started some new soccer league, but of course it failed.
