Re: The 2010-11 NFL Season Thread
So is it a lack of pass rush or secondary issues for the Pats D? Looks like they'll have to outscore a bunch of teams.
It's mainly the lack of a pass rush. When Tully Banta Cain is your best pass rusher, a guy who was a special teamer/role player his entire career until last season. A guy who racked up 10 sacks, but 6 of them came against the Bills. That's not a good sign. Belichick always says that sacks are an overrated stat, and I can get on board with that. But they just don't get enough pressure on the QB. Their secondary is young and raw. They could be real good in a few years WITH some help from the front seven, but they can't do it on their own, at least not now.
Re: The 2010-11 NFL Season Thread
BAD day for the Patriots and they haven't played since Thursday. Leigh Bodden was placed on IR and is out for the season. He is their top DB. He may not be great, but he's solid and he's the lone veteran presence in their secondary. Now 2nd year UConn product, Darius Butler and rookie Devin McCourty move up to starting slots. They're young, they're fast, athletic, they've got some promise. But neither is nearly as good, or as trustworthy as Bodden.
The lone bright spot is I don't think their defense was going to be great with or without Bodden due to the shoddy pass rush, but this just goes from bad to worse. It's looking more and more like they're going to have to get into shootouts with teams and rack up some serious points ala 2007 to be successful. Losing two key guys on defense before the season even starts is not a good sign, Bodden and Ty Warren. We'll see what these young guys are made of.
Speaking of which. We saw WAY too much of what one of the rookies was made of today. Don't know if you guys heard about this, but rookie LB, Brandon Spikes had a sex tape leak online yesterday. Apparently he went onto Chat Roulette with his girlfriend while at college and filmed an intimate moment. Not exactly the greatest impression to make on the organization, after a very solid start to his pro career.

On the Spikes stuff--he already lost an endorsement deal with Reebok because of the sex tape. It won't affect them on the field.
The DB thing is tough but I think they should be offering up some draft picks next year if they're really concerned about the position. The Ravens (also hard hit by injuries to the secondary) just picked up Josh Wilson (young CB with starting experience) for a measly fifth rounder.
So Derrick Burgess and Cunningham (rookie OLB from Florida) haven't provided pass rush for them? I guess I can understand Burgess--he's old but I think they should have attempted to grab more 3-4 olb during the draft especially during the middle rounds.
The good news is the Butler had a year in the defensive system and should be better. Although the secondary is very young (Merriweather--4th year, Chung--2nd year, with the 2 corners), I'd rather have a bunch of young guys than some old guys who can't cover.
Re: The 2010-11 NFL Season Thread
Burgess hasn't done too much so far, and didn't too much last year either but he was needed for depth purposes. Cunningham hasn't played to my knowledge as of yet. Not sure what his deal is. Like I said, the secondary COULD be good. They've got a lot of potential there, but they need some help up front and I just don't see where that pass rush is going to come from. I don't know if trading for a DB would help at this point. I'd rather coax Aaron Schoebel out of retirement or trade for someone who can get the QB. Not the easiest thing to find though. as the Patriots have proven the last 2 years.
Re: The 2010-11 NFL Season Thread
Well, the Derrick Burgess experiment is officially over in New England. He was cut yesterday. Let's just say, that didn't work out quite how they planned. They also cut LB Pierre Woods, who had started a few games last year and special teamer/WR Sam Aiken. Oh, and they placed safety Brandon McGowan on IR, so they're down yet another DB. The defense just seems to be getting worse and worse by the day. I was highly optimistic about this team about a month ago, now I have some serious doubts. The offense needs to score early and often and avoid playing from behind to take the pressure off the defense. And they need to score TD's in the redzone instead of settling for FG's like last year. If not, they could be in some trouble.

I don't know faldor, judging by this thread, the only team in the NFL is the Patriots, so I'd say they have a pretty good shot at winning it all.

Bills questions:
Who's the starter at running back? How many touches is CJ Spiller expected to get (especially in Week 1)?
Also, the Broncos dumped CB Alphonso Smith to the Lions for some 3rd TE. This is only noteworthy because DEN traded the 14th pick in the draft for the rights to draft Smith. That is a very bad use of resources by DEN.
I'm sure the Pats talk will subside once the games start in a few days. Beats nothing but Favre talk on other sites.

Well here's a non Patriot story, albeit from a Patriot point of view.

Bad news for Patriots, Randy Moss
Posted by Albert Breer September 6, 2010
This probably isn't the news most of you wanted to wake up to, and since I just got done writing it up for the paper. ...
Darrelle Revis has signed a four-year deal with the New York Jets worth $46 million with $32 million guaranteed, as first reported by our pal Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News and ESPN's Adam Schefter. On the surface, seems as if Revis' camp gave on the total dollars, the Jets gave on the guaranteed money, and the star cornerback gets another crack at free agency/a new deal at the tender age of 28.
One party that did not win: Randy Moss. The Patriots star was held to nine catches and a measly 58 yards (6.4-yard average) in two meetings with Revis last year. The team and player grew pretty frustrated with Revis last year, to the point where they threw one up to Moss in garbage time of the New England November win to try and pad his stats.
When I was at Jets camp back in early August, Rex Ryan said that the minute Revis reports, he's starting. So he's likely to be out there opposite Antonio Cromartie a week from tomorrow at New Meadowlands Stadium, and the next week across from Moss.
A couple weeks ago, in casual conversation with a high-ranking personnel official from a rival team, the Jets came up. And when talking about the defense, and how potentially dominant it could be, he said, "But it doesn't work, the way they want to play, without 24."
Which is to say the AFC East just got a lot more interesting

It'll probably be Marshawn Lynch, since Fred Jackson is still recovering from a broken hand. But CJ will see a lot of work. They've developed a wildcat (or wildBill) offense just for him. Add on top of that he'll be seeing a lot of passes and regular runs. That'll probably change once F.Jackson comes back, but he looks to be good in the early weeks of the season. Just keep an eye out for Fred Jackson's health, because CJ's stats will go down once he comes back and CJ takes over as the main man on Special Teams.
Another Bills thing in relation to Revis: Revis said Lee Evans is the toughest WR he sees every year.
I really think The Bills could be a dark horse this season in the AFC east. All they need is a pass rusher and another Wide Out opposite Evans.

I've heard the Bills O-line is a joke, so that could hold them back.
