Just out of curiosity, other than playing other people's songs fairly well, what exactly has dj brought to the band? I have no problem with him as a replacement, but all this crap about his contributions is ridiculous.
I can't wait to see how DJ lovers answer this question! 
To be fair, it could take us ten years to hear what he contributes.

Here's a problem I have with radio and citing charts. Since D brought it up, I haven't once heard that Slash song on the radio. Nor did I hear Better. CD I heard a ton.
The rock radio charts reflect a very small number of stations, stations that fit a certain format, etc. that the majority of the general public never touch, let alone have a preset for.
Making it on the rock charts really isn't anything to crow about. Apparently, AIC had two big hits off their CD, which I own. I've never heard them on the radio. Not once.
So, color me ambivalent.
Are you serious man? I couldn't escape Your Decision for like the better part of a fucking year. Every day, if I listened to modern rock radio, I heard that track at least 5 times a day. It's a great track, but still, radio beat into the ground. They were proud AIC was back, I guess. Ironically, I still thought the strongest tracks like Private Hell & Black Gives Way To Blue didn't get much airplay, yet they are the strongest cuts on the album imo.
Mike Portnoy's stuff got me to thinking alot about Dream Theater again the otehr day. There's a perfect example of radio don't mean much. Although they are technically one hit wonders, and never really been a "huge" band, DT has been making constantly quality music for 20 years. They have a great relationship with their fans, and Portnoy specifically seemed to go out of his way to appease them. And they've stayed musically and band strong because of it after all these years.
Yet they remain in the purgatory between "big act" and "underground", and have never been radio popular, mainly because some of their best stuff are epic 12 minute songs.
All i'm saying is, sometimes it pays to NOT be a radio darling. They are loved for exactly who they are, because they came out of the gate like that, and also fighting their label who wanted to just make them a melodic Metallica in the beginning.
GN'R kind of fucked themselves like that. They started out with those intentions, then suddenly became famous, loved every fucking moment, and went out of their way in the UYI albums to cut radio-specific tunes, because they felt it was their obligation. Now, Axl wants to do the underground road, yet expectations have been set. You can't do it big, then go small. You just can't.
It's just those reasons and a few others why I think GN'R have to produce radio-ready tunes, otherwise they're just gonna be constantly ripped. Their mold has been set.

Nikki Sixx? Please drop that, you are acting like he is fucking Mick Jagger. "Saint of Los Angeles" sounds cool, not because of Ashba, but because of Tommy's Drum's and Vince's voice. I like the song. I guess Ashba gets some credit for helping write a kick ass tune. "Life is Beautiful" is good too...
Mick Jagger? To me, Mick Jagger is an overrated bloke who got lucky at the right time, not because he ever did write good songs. I take Nikki Sixx and some cheesy lyrics any day over that guy. But that's just me and something called taste, and I'm totally aware that people won't agree. But it's still just taste.

We don't know yet, but there's this thing called "potential" which Buckethead had plenty of, and Robin Finck had none of. Ashba got plenty of it.

what has he had the opportunity to do so far? what are you looking for him to accomplish?
- i'm sure that he has brought some of his own fans (and or SixxAM fans) into the gnr landscape
- his ballad of death solo is pretty cool
- he modified the This I Love solo somewhat
- his stage presence is pretty cool (kida 80's 90's throwback attitude) he gets the fans involved and interacts with those close to him directly

They are there to imitate something which they are not.
And when they did not and Buckethead dressed in a yellow rain coat and Robin Finck dressed like some kind of goth alien, they got shit because they "looked like freaks".
Damned if you do and damned if you don't.
And I personally dug Finck's 2002 look because it was his image alone.

So why are they nobodies and Ashba writing with Nikki Sixx and Axl Rose? What you are saying is that you actually claim to know Ashba's skills better than two of the most legendary rockers in the world.
And I am mentioning Ashbas name with Slash, because Slash haven' done anything of interest since 1993 in my honest opinion, and DJ has. There I've mentioned them in the same sentence because that's my taste and opinion.
While Ashba prolly won't ever write a new Jungle or SCOM or PC, he and Sixx wipes the floor with Slash 1993-2010 on "Saint of Los Angeles". Yet another personal opinion there.
That 2002 bunch was another cover band, who pretended they were Guns N' Roses. I don't care about Ashba's look too much, but is fits GN'R. 2002 was worse with that awful Finck image, not to mention his playing 'skills'. To tell the truth I'm happy that Robin is out, and DJ's doing a much better job. 
Ashba's writing with Axl Rose? It's news to me. This 'band' hasn't written jack shit for 4 years at least, but I think it's 8 years.
BTW neglecting Slash's amazing work post 1993 never stops surprise me. He's doing the same great stuff, with exploring new territories of music. Anyone who criticize the quality of his post 1993 work, cannot like (or love) his old GN'R work, cause the man's still there, and, to tell the truth, he's better than ever. Just the other players changed. Messages guitar work is on par with Estranged, Slither isn't worse than Jungle, and so on. Just listen the acoustic show with Myles Kennedy. He plays like in the Lies days, just much better.

Nikki Sixx>Mick Jagger.... UNFUCKING BELIEVEABLE!!!
Nikki Sixx is probably the worst Bass player in a huge band ever, he only played bass as his vehicle to be in a famous band, he is a terrible bass player. He gets the job done, that is it. Mick has written some amazing lyrics, up there with John Lennon... Axl Rose, Slash, Izzy, all love Mick and Stones, yet you say Nikki fuckin Sixx owns him. Amazing.

and the motley SOLA shit.... Simple Plan wrote the title track and gave it to Nikki. Rest of the album is pretty subpar music wise and i am a diehard Motley fan. None of SOLA is on par with any of Motley's guitar riffs let alone GNR stuff.
Ghost shits all over anything DJ has ever done musically....ditto for By THe Sword Slither even Fall To Pieces.
