Re: Alice's take on Axl
to finish the thought... from rolling stone mag ....via wiki
"After finishing work with Simple Plan, producer Bob Rock brought the song to Mötley Crüe knowing that they were looking to record new material to include on their new compilation album (red white and crue). After hearing the song, Mötley Crüe bassist Nikki Sixx made several lyrical and music changes to it before the band recorded it."
as for Nikki's talents...the man assembled and made Motley crue huge...nearly every single hit was written by Sixx ... lyrics and musical structure
and DJ has a songwriting credit from nearly every single song on SOLA

Duff and Tommy would play circles around Nikki. Nikki is cool and can write good songs, doesn't mean he is a proficient bass player.

Re: Alice's take on Axl
personally I find SOLA as uninspired and generic as green day..it does nothing whatsoever for me.. I guess I just left motley behind long ago, they're just so dated.. If Axl wants to relive the 80`s again like Adler, then him and DJ will live happily ever after.
Re: Alice's take on Axl
Just out of curiosity, other than playing other people's songs fairly well, what exactly has dj brought to the band? I have no problem with him as a replacement, but all this crap about his contributions is ridiculous.
Who said he has brought anything? People are speculating what he COULD bring to the band, based on his recent work with SixxAM, Motley Crue, "Ballad Of Death", etc.
People seem to be blowing this out of proportion. Nobody has claimed that DJ is the best guitarist that has ever stepped foot into GNR, so I'm not so sure why people are getting all bent out of shape.
Re: Alice's take on Axl
I just love how Slash hasn't done shit when Contraband blew Chinese Democracy out of the water not only on sales but hit singles and is an amazing rock album.
Yeah that Slash can't write shit anymore.
Hell Back From Cali got higher than Better on the charts.
Your comparison between Contraband and CD are completely your opinion but if you want to compare sales and hit singles. "The Heroin Diaries" had more hit singles and sold better than "Slash". Did it not? I know it's not over yet and people still believe that "Beautiful Dangerous" is gonna set the world on fire, but until then.
I loved Contraband too, and I liked Slash's solo effort as well, but it shouldn't be too far fetched to imagine that a few people in this world prefer SixxAM, Chinese Democracy, Beautiful Creatures, Saints of Los Angeles, Britney Spears, etc., etc. Is that so hard to accept?

oh i agree...even nikki himself admits that he isnt that good....but i mean he still has a ton of hit songs and a massive amount of record sales...so whatever to his "ability" the guy is as about as successful as ou can be in a rock n roll band
and to boot Nikki managed to get Crue back all their rights to their back catalogue
Re: Alice's take on Axl
DCK wrote:They are there to imitate something which they are not.
And when they did not and Buckethead dressed in a yellow rain coat and Robin Finck dressed like some kind of goth alien, they got shit because they "looked like freaks".
Damned if you do and damned if you don't.
And I personally dug Finck's 2002 look because it was his image alone.
I heard Ashba's stuff, he can play, but he's nothing more than one of the 1 million guitarists in LA. Even mentioning his name with Slash's in the same sentence would be ridiculous.
So why are they nobodies and Ashba writing with Nikki Sixx and Axl Rose? What you are saying is that you actually claim to know Ashba's skills better than two of the most legendary rockers in the world.
And I am mentioning Ashbas name with Slash, because Slash haven' done anything of interest since 1993 in my honest opinion, and DJ has. There I've mentioned them in the same sentence because that's my taste and opinion.
While Ashba prolly won't ever write a new Jungle or SCOM or PC, he and Sixx wipes the floor with Slash 1993-2010 on "Saint of Los Angeles". Yet another personal opinion there.
That 2002 bunch was another cover band, who pretended they were Guns N' Roses. I don't care about Ashba's look too much, but is fits GN'R. 2002 was worse with that awful Finck image, not to mention his playing 'skills'. To tell the truth I'm happy that Robin is out, and DJ's doing a much better job.
Ashba's writing with Axl Rose? It's news to me. This 'band' hasn't written jack shit for 4 years at least, but I think it's 8 years.
BTW neglecting Slash's amazing work post 1993 never stops surprise me. He's doing the same great stuff, with exploring new territories of music. Anyone who criticize the quality of his post 1993 work, cannot like (or love) his old GN'R work, cause the man's still there, and, to tell the truth, he's better than ever. Just the other players changed. Messages guitar work is on par with Estranged, Slither isn't worse than Jungle, and so on. Just listen the acoustic show with Myles Kennedy. He plays like in the Lies days, just much better.
So, 2002 was a cover band with the wrong image. 2010 is a cover band with the right image and therefore too much like Slash? I don't really understand, what would be prefered? That is, if you leave out the silly reunion crap. Nothing?
Ashba is working with Axl Rose, as in on stage. Axl picked him to perform duties, and that includes live shows and possible song writing. Potential.
It never stops surprise you that people don't like Slash's stuff post 1993 because it's your taste. I don't think he's better than ever, I think his solo album was a complete fart. It's taste and you can't debate it and make me convinced that I'm wrong.
One can debate the technical side to Nikkis bass playing as sub par, and sure, it is. Luckily, I don't listen to music based on technical skills, I listen to music based on other input than that. If I wanted only technical skills, I'd listen to Bach or Mozart, not Nikki Sixx.

Re: Alice's take on Axl
I would take Zakk Wylde or Doug Aldrich in GNR over Ashba, thing is, most big name players would never want to put up with Axl's BS. So he is stuck with guys like DJ, Fortus, and Ron (who is awesome, but under the radar). B listers.
Re: Alice's take on Axl
well wylde was there a long time ago as we all know but it didnt pan out...and we all know that was Slash's doing not axl's, cant blame him though really
nowadays Zakk has BLS to worry about instead of being in GNR and following the initial gnr thing i think Zakk went on and recorded Ozzmosis with Ozzy
not really familiar with doug aldrich's works...but back when CD was started Axl was looking for a departure from the classic guns sound and based on his associatons with Dio and Whitesnake i doubt that he was the kind of guy axl was interested in at the time
anyway you are picking hypothetical choices, maybe those guys were asked and turned the gig down....we dont know, might as well prefer hendrix being in guns for all the good it does
