Neemo, my point is there are class players out there are are also class writers, but most wouldn't want to deal with the GNR bs. Zakk was approached again after 1996... The told Axl to basically fuck off and get Slash back. That was that. Zakk's skills eroded pretty bad for a while when everything he wrote sounded like imitation black sabbath. Sounds like Zakk is now back in top form.
Doug is an amazing player. Originally in the Band "Lion". He is just a chops machine, but Chops in the "rock" genre... Unlike Bucket and Bumble... He is really humble and cool too, like Bumble. And he plays the solos true to form.

i dunno the comings and goings of who was approached or whatever to play in guns...even when Bucket came in i dont think they were looking for a writer...just someone to take the existing songs that they had written and move them to the next level...reason maybe why Axl didnt get Class players is that GnR only has room for one ego in his view? or maybe the class players dont like the idea of being pigeon-holed into being Slash's replacement? maybe some guys like Zakk say that Axl and Slash belong together and i'm not gonna stand in the way of that...who knows whats goin on there...maybe it is Axl's rep...i dunno
the core "writing" group of the Chinese sessions looks like it was Axl, Pitman, Tobias, Dizzy, and .... to a lesser extent, Robin and Tommy...any others were brought in later to flesh out the material
now from someone like me or you we would say get someone like Izzy in to write the songs...well how many Izzy's are out there really? another thing going for DJ is that he's an indiana boy....may explain why him and axl seem so tight, Axl always seeems to gravitate to people from his home town (state), seems to go a long way for axl to have things in common like that

I'm not sure any class guitar with a big name, say Brian May, in reality would bother to take up the position as a replacement to Slash. It just doesn't work well. Something in my mind is totally against such change of monsters.
It's better, and Axl did this with Bucket and Ashba, to bring in potentially monsters, and not produced monsters from another band.
GNR guitarist is a spot which is almost impossible to do, because people bring in the Slash card at any given moment. Either you try to look like Slash, or you're a freak when you wanna do something different.

I would take Zakk Wylde or Doug Aldrich in GNR over Ashba, thing is, most big name players would never want to put up with Axl's BS. So he is stuck with guys like DJ, Fortus, and Ron (who is awesome, but under the radar). B listers.
well wylde was there a long time ago as we all know but it didnt pan out...and we all know that was Slash's doing not axl's, cant blame him though really
nowadays Zakk has BLS to worry about instead of being in GNR and following the initial gnr thing i think Zakk went on and recorded Ozzmosis with Ozzy
not really familiar with doug aldrich's works...but back when CD was started Axl was looking for a departure from the classic guns sound and based on his associatons with Dio and Whitesnake i doubt that he was the kind of guy axl was interested in at the time
anyway you are picking hypothetical choices, maybe those guys were asked and turned the gig down....we dont know, might as well prefer hendrix being in guns for all the good it does
Doug Aldrich would be fucking sweet in GN'R. Especially if combined with Ron. Doug is a really understated guitarist, because he unfortunately just was never apart of bands that ever really took off.
During the mid-to-late 80's, Aldrich was in the band Lion. Probably most famous for their "Transformers Theme" which was on the 1986 film. They also had a bit of cult fame with fans for contributions to other soundtracks, such as "Never Surrender" & "Power Love" to The Wraith soundtrack, as well as "Love Is A Lie" to Friday The 13th Part IV. They only released two albums, Dangerous Attraction in 1986 and Trouble In Angel City in 1989.
Aldrich, and singer Kal Swan reformed with a new band called Bad Moon Rising and released a debut self-titled album in 1991. Two other releases followed, Blood in 1993, and Opium For The Masses in 1995. The band called it quits in 1998.
Both Lion & Bad Moon Rising were primarily popular in Japan, which has probably the world's biggest love of melodic/power rock.
Aldrich is now with Whitesnake. Despite the guy's melodic/glam roots, Doug is a fuckin' awesome guitarist. Really underrated guy.

I think people go a little over the top with the personal taste thing just so people can't call them out and say they are wrong.
hey my personal taste, I'll take Motley Crue greatest hits over Led Zeppelin or The Beatles but I'd never sit here and say MC are a better band cause objectively i can listen and realize they aren't better, i just prefer it.
I'd never go into a room and debate Motley as being better just cause my "taste" likes them more.
Seems anytime axl gets a new guitar player.. the whole "Taste" thing comes into play. Finck now DJ.

But that's how it is. Are we discussing the mathematical side to music or do we discuss the art of it. I'm not gonna admit to The Beatles being better than Motley Crue just because the majority think so. How do you conclude on that subject by the way? Are there any certain mathematical formula to use, because that's what it sounds like. That you can mathematically prove that a band like Led Zeppelin is a better band. Well, not in my ears. In my ears they are quite boring. At least Motley Crue makes me wanna drink beer.
You can always refer to changes in keys, complexity of a song etc etc, but that doesn't automatically make the song good in peoples ear, and peoples ears are different. The day I let rationality and mathematics decide over what I like, is the day I stop listening.
