Re: Alice's take on Axl
Calling DJ a Slash wannabe and downplaying his writing ability in SixxAM and with Motley sounds a little like trashing him to me. Sorry, that's just how I see it. People just seem to be overdoing sticking up for Slash, when NOBODY has claimed that Slash isn't a top 10 guitarist of all time. You seem to be creating arguments that aren't even there.
once again, im not downplaying DJ's abilities. but Saints OF Los Angeles was written by Simple Plan and is the best track guitar wise on SOLA and no one in their right mind is gonna sit here and say the guitar work on SOLA comes close to that of Wildside,Live Wire,Dr Feelgood,Kickstart My Heart etc.
DJ is a good riff writer however, and that will get GNR sounding more like the original, thus should allow them to get back to the top of the charts.
DJ is a Slash wannabe. that isn't a slight, its the truth but one can say Slash was a Joe perry Wannabe. not always a bad thing. U put a curly wig on DJ and its a match.
Re: Alice's take on Axl
If I die tomorrow was written by simple plan heres the SOLA credits :
Sixx, Michael, Ashba, Frederiksen.
Hate to have to state the obvious dude, but in a post original GNR world EVERY guitarist is a Slash wannabe he is one of the most influential guitarists of all time.
You'd be hard pressed to get a guy who isn't influenced heavily by slash

Good point, every guitarist 40 and younger is influeced by Slash on some level I am sure. Its not fair to compare these guys to an icon, and even if well compensated, it takes some guts to play on that stage each night knowing that a large portion of the crowd wished Slash was there... If I were in GNR, I would try to play as much like Slash as possible, its fucking GNR.

Re: Alice's take on Axl
^ Got to agree with that. And to be fair, in the whole robin was bashed for not respecting the old parts enough to play them like slash, not looking like slash, not sounding anything like slash, and so on....so if DJ is trying to look and sound like the slash era, then he's basicly just doing what suits the music and what people asked for.
Re: Alice's take on Axl
I don't like Ashba at all but monkey(and others) make a good point. Finck was butchering that classic material and people(including me) bitched. Now there's a 3rd rate Slash clone in the band and people are still bitching.
What do you want Axl to do? Is there someone besides Slash that can fill that spot and you'd be pleased?

my mistake, i got mixed up on songs.
yeah SOLA is an awesome/monster riff/song
I like DJ *cept when he twitters too much* but his playing and skill I am a huge fan of. always have been. I just don't think he is anywhere in Slash's league.
he is the perfect replacement for Slash though cause at least he is a fan and plays the shit correctly.
I guess what turned me off a lot about the new band was how most of them weren't fans of the band.. why would u join something u didn't like? thats why i always thought it was a paycheck for hire deal and maybe not 100 percent genuine. at least we know DJ is a major fan.

No, and I think that's the point. There's only one man who can cease that bitching.
Subconsciously the whole thing always comes back to the original band not being there, whether people want to recognize it or not.

Re: Alice's take on Axl
D and J.R. summed it well. Some things to add.
First of all, I need to point out that I'm satisfied with DJ's playing as a tribute band replacement. He's doing a great job. But it's ridiculous to idolize him as him being better for GN'R than Slash.
I have issues with DJ's being an asskisser, but I can get on with it. My main problem is with Axl Rose and how he runs this band. If he really wants to do something new, if he doesn't wanna live off the old success, if he's so proud of CD, then play 14 of the 14 songs every show. At least 12 and no AFD tribute fest.
Then go to the studio, release the old CD tracks to ease the wait, and write new songs with this line-up and release them in a year. Cause this new band has no identity - just like the 2002-2006 didn't have any. They are playing other people's songs better or worse. The absolute lack of identity is my biggest problem with the whole band.

Point taken, and while I'd be in full support of them moving in that direction, you have the obvious. A VAST majority of people that go to see Guns N' Roses would much rather hear the hits than anything off of Chinese Democracy or anything "new". Whether it's Slash playing up there, or DJ, or my Uncle Richie, it doesn't matter in the respect with what songs they want to hear. So it's not as simple as just burying the past and moving on. Plus, Axl had a huge part in the creation of those songs. If Slash, Steven, etc. can still play those songs, I'm not sure why Axl shouldn't. Even if the new band and CD blew up to epic proportions, which it didn't and won't, but even if it did, we'd still be getting much of the same. There are certain songs that they must play and always will. You can't just move on and forget the past completely, nor would I want them to.
Hell, even if this was called "The Axl Rose Project", I'm sure we'd be getting pretty much the same setlists. Would that still be a problem for some?
