Re: Alice's take on Axl

What do you want Axl to do? Is there someone besides Slash that can fill that spot and you'd be pleased?
No, and I think that's the point. There's only one man who can cease that bitching.
Subconsciously the whole thing always comes back to the original band not being there, whether people want to recognize it or not.
Exactly and it's even more amplified now that Slash is out touring and kicking so much ass in his live shows playing more and more of the old songs and playing them better than 'Gn'R' themselves. He's even performing Civil War. Funny how 'Guns N' Roses' won't even touch that song but the fans woudl love to hear Axl sing it.
I also think alot of people would stop bitching if it wasn't called Guns N' Roses. If it wasn't Guns N' Roses anyone could be in the band and be themselves and not worry about emulating anyone and the fans conciously or subconciously wouldn't expect them to.. Plus that way you'd get a more Pro CD crowd. Slash tours under Slash and VR so people expect to hear his new stuff. Axl tours under Gun N' Roses so he's fucked and has to play an AFD heavy set every single night and he's done nothing to change that.

Yes, but no. If Axl took that road when Slash/Duff left, this band would not be here, Chinese Democracy would not exist and so on.
Besides, it wouldn't be any fun.
And I'm all for the fun.
Just fucking leave the politics at the door and just have fun. People are so uptight about music.

We'll never know, but I'm of the belief that some people just hate Axl Rose and would refuse to support anything he does, regardless of the name he chooses to go by. People blame him for the breakup of the original band, people hate his prima donna attitude, his lateness, his inability to admit wrongdoing. The list goes on and on. You mean to tell me, he changes the name of the band and all that goes away and is forgiven? I just don't buy it.
A few things about the setlist. Obviously I HATE when people bitch about setlists, but there's a few things I don't fully understand. I'm completely fine with the number of new songs vs. old songs. I know some people want all of CD played and very little else. There are certain staples that I'd still like to hear played, and obviously that will continue. I wouldn't mind them alternating CD songs a little more though. But the one thing Bono brought up about Slash playing "Civil War". I'm not sure why the UYI's have been pretty much ignored by Axl over the years. We've never really been given an explanation why only a handful of those 30 songs are played. While AFD is one of the greatest albums ever, I don't think casual fans would mind hearing "Yesterdays", "Civil War", "Estranged", etc. over some of the AFD tracks. Did Axl ever address that in the chats or anytime else? Because I don't seem to remember him doing so. There must be a reason.
Re: Alice's take on Axl
Axl said he would like to play Civil War & Estranged down the line. But it never happened.
Axl's addressed his issue with those songs, a few times, over the span of a decade. He has personal issues with the Illusion songs. It emotionally bothers him to hear some of those songs. It's not the fan's, and he's appreciative some fans love the Illusion albums, but all Axl hears is the inner turmoil in the band at the time the songs were recorded. So he doesn't like to go there much, short of 4-5 UYI songs at a time. Thus the lack of UYI material.
As for Axl and the GN'R name, Axl continuing Guns without Guns was his ultimate egotistical "F U" to the old guys for abandoning him out of spite. This is what he gets for that move... simple as that. There's pros and cons to that brand name.
I frankly don't care anymore. The whole GN'R brand name argument was a dead duck about 8 years ago. It is what it is. Guns N' Roses exists as Axl + whoever. Fans can decided what they accept and what they don't. I personally feel Guns N' Roses hasn't performed since 1993. But I still call guys like Ron Thal & Tommy Stinson - "Guns N' Roses members". I really don't care all that much one way or the other.
I just want a new album. That's all.

Re: Alice's take on Axl
That makes sense about the UYI songs.
I wonder how much differently things would've been if the 2002 lineup stayed intact. I mean, that WAS Axl's vision for GNR 2.0. Yeah Paul left, but nobody would've really blinked an eye at that. But when you lose 2 more guitarists and your drummer and replace them and still go out there and play the material from that timeframe, I can see how that's a little hard to accept. At least for some "fans". I don't think it would've made much of a difference to the casuals. They either accepted GNR without Slash or not. I don't think it mattered WHO took his place.
Re: Alice's take on Axl
I blame Axl for breaking up the old band. I don't like 99% of his post 1994 music (including SFTD). But I love TWAT, and if he put out a bunch of songs that spoke to me like that song does, I would support him 100%.
The simple fact is I don't like it that much. That has nothing to do with my personal feelings about Axl. I blew off several opportunities to see Slash on this current tour because I don't like most of his solo album. I love what he's doing with the old stuff, but that's not enough to get me to go see Slash with fake Axl anymore than I'm running out to see Axl with fake Slash. Say what you want about me, but I am consistent with my approach.

No but all the bitching about what the guitar players look and sound like would go away. Lose the name Guns N' Roses and there's no expectations to sound anything like it save for when you play a handful of old songs in concerts but even then it's not Gun N' Roses so people would more easily accept it as a straight up cover. Lose the Gn'R name and he woudln't have to worry about playing a Gn'R back catelogue heavy set every night. Velvet Revolver is more Guns N' Roses then Gn'R but people didn't go to a VR show expecting to hear 15 Guns N' Roses songs. Axl NEEDS to play the old songs cause he's taken the name.
Use Slash right now for example. Slash does Gn'R songs with a different singer but nobody bitches cause it's not Gn'R and it isn't supposed to be. Believe me if this was just Axl Rose solo project or some other name his musical choices would be much more accepted without the comparisons. That's just straight up common sense.
