Re: US Mid-Term Elections 2010
They elect the house or something. The guys making the laws, kinda like parliament I suppose. It's got a democractic majority currently, which means it's alot easier for the President to pass resolutions. They predict the republicans will take over, making it almost certain Obama will become a 1 term President.
Re: US Mid-Term Elections 2010
so what the fuck is a mid term election? can Obama lose his presidency?
forgive my total lack of US political knowledge
No, Obama can't lose his presidency. It's two years after a president was elected both the senate and Houses are up for reelection. The Democrats will have to lose a lot for them to lose power. They'll probably lose a bunch of seats not enough for the Republicans to have a majority and control the agenda.
Bill Clinton survived 1994 Republican beatdown and made it to a second term though. It depends on the state of the US and which person the Republicans nominate as their Presidential nominee.
Edit: On further reading, the Republicans are likely to win back the house as they need something like 40 seats. But they won't get the Senate as they have too much ground to make up there and they nominated some really suspect candidates.
Re: US Mid-Term Elections 2010
and a governor is like the person "in charge" of a particular state?
in Canada they are Premier's of our Provinces
Exactly. State Governors as well as U.S. Senators tend, not always, to be the ones who also run for our President of the U.S. job.
I.e., Obama was an Illinois Senator before getting the job. George W. Bush was a governor of Texas before being president, etc.
The midterms have no bearing on the presidential election in 2012. That election will be about the economy. If the economy improves, Obama is re-elected. If it does not improve, he'll be blamed and lose. Just like George Sr. in 92.
I thought it was very classy of Obama to come out and take full responsibility for the lack of improvement in his first two years. But with the way the elections went yesterday, it's looking like another 1980.
A "feel good Democrat" (Carter) get ousted after one term for the back to business Republican (Reagan).
This is playing out SOOO similar.
