Re: Man with HIV & Leukemia Cured of Both Diseases!?
Posted December 15, 2010 1:54 PM.
HIV treatment and leukemia doctors in Berlin, working with an American patient with both diseases, have declared in a peer-reviewed journal that they believe they have cured both illnesses. It would be the first time an HIV patient has been cured. Experts here call the development encouraging, but warn that years of work remain before the treatment could lead to a general therapy against HIV.
" 'Cured' is a strong word. But this is very encouraging," said Dr. David Scadden, codirector of the Harvard University Stem Cell Institute.
"I would call this a functional cure," said Dr. Margaret Fischl, pioneering AIDS researcher at the University of Miami. "It's on the level and a very remarkable case. But would we do this with an HIV patient? No."
The treatment's side effects are too harsh for general use, Fischl said. Still, it opens up new avenues for researchers to create more practical cures, she said.
In 2007, Dr. Gero Huetter and colleagues at Charite-University Medicine Berlin did stem cell therapy on Timothy Ray Brown, a 44year- old American who had HIV and leukemia. They used stem cells from a donor who had an inherited gene mutation that left Brown's body without the gene receptors involved in contracting HIV, making him naturally resistant to the virus. This week in the journal Blood, the doctors say that 3 1/ 2 years after the transplant, Brown's cell counts remain in the range of people without HIV. "In conclusion," they wrote, "our results strongly suggest that cure of HIV has been achieved in this patient."
Brown also shows no evidence of leukemia. The treatment in Brown's case couldn't be used for the general population, Fischl said, because he had to undergo chemotherapy and fullbody radiation for leukemia. The treatments nearly destroyed his immune system, but left his body receptive to the HIV-resistant stem cells.

It's pretty damn good news really...gives us all hope for the future. Although it's kinda a downer that they say they nearly had to kill him to do it and so you can't do it on everyone...but it's definately a real good sign for the future.

Wow, I hope this is a step in the right direction.
Hey Monkey, for some reason I thought you would be at the Megadeth gig tonight, or did they play a show in Melbourne as well?

Yeah they played at No Sleep Til in melbourne last night!!!
Dave might be a couple of years older than back in the day but damn if it doesn't seem like he's in his prime!
This version of the band is just so flawless...the musicanship is incredible. While i've loved other incarnations as well, Dave and Chris just blows me away.
Rust in Peace was amazing as you'd expect, but I was really really happy to get "How the Story Ends" as it's my fav track on endgame...or one of them anyway. And that solo from Chris in the middle was just incredible...note perfect as you'd expect and lightyears beyond anything I can do on the guitar.
I went to the festival just for megadeth, and I was skeptical that the enviroment there would make for a bad show (outdoors, big crowd = hard to see, lots of fans there of other bands who will wanna fight more than watch. - sorry i'm getting too old to fight for my spot at at show hahah) etc - but it was actually the opposite...got a much better spot than I had at the last festival hall indoor gig in mebourne, the sound mix was fine, and, once again the band were in top form.
I'd been ill with a miagraine that day. And going in I'd begun to doubt if it was worth the effort. (i was so sick - i'd begun to rationalise - thoughts like 'i'll just watch the big 4 and rust in peace blu rays real loud tomorrow! lol). But i forced myself to go despite nearly throwing up on the train and other fun stuff....but it was worth every second. Fantastic gig.
There were a few 17 yo types who prefer to fight in the mosh rather than actually see the band...but generally...great show.
So yeah I totally recommend modern megadeth to anyone who comes across them...i really think this line up has recaptured the glory of the Marty days.
Sorry for a thread derail!!!!!
