Ex Gn’R manager chats exclusively about his new act

Tom Hollister Trio: What it would sound like if Eric Clapton and Otis Reading started a band.

Alan Niven admits he wasn’t interested when his wife Heather told him to check out an up and coming guitarist showing off his skills on YouTube, but it only took one look at Chris Buck’s clip to realise he was seeing something special.

The ex-Guns N’ Roses manager is now the star-maker behind up and coming blues rockers the Tom Hollister Trio and their remarkable opportunity is all down to the viral video site.

After spotting the teenager’s potential, Niven was also blown away by the vocals of Tom Hollister, who joined Buck in his Abercarn bedroom. The pair soon joined forces as a band with drummer Adam Roberts, and were signed up by the man who helped steer Gn’R to the top of the rock n’ roll world.

In an exclusive interview with RockAAA, Niven revealed the Trio have been working on their debut album with legendary producer Chris Kimsey and will be heading back to America next month, but he says they won’t be rushing their work.

Niven said: “Chris has begun pre-production with the band. Heather and I really, really, like Chris Kimsey’s vibe, and of course, his track record is impeccable.

“The larder is filling up nicely with originals, and when the band are here in Arizona in April we hope to see a couple more songs come together. We plan a little bit of studio work but on their return to the UK they will get into the studio with Chris Kimsey and start recording masters for an album.

“We’re not in a race or a pressure situation. Excellence takes its own time. And that’s the vision – to make the album worthwhile and special.”

Niven has labelled Buck as the ‘best up-and-coming-guitarist this century’ but the teenager took a bit of convincing before he believed who was emailing him.

Niven explained: “It was my partner Heather who spotted him on YouTube. She was actually looking to find out who was trading GnR demos with my name attached. She came and asked me to look, and I rather stupidly said ‘have you any idea how many wannabes are playing in their bedrooms’ -- which earned me a hairy eyeball.

“So I duly sat down in front of the screen and was totally blown away by the feel and articulation with which Chris played -- remember he was all of 16 then.

“He was playing at being ‘Lil Slash’ -- but it was obvious even then he had his own sense of expression. Heather has a very acute ear. We thought it would be fun to compliment him and that evolved into an email correspondence -- we’d exchange missives four, five times a week.

“Once he realised who he was talking to, he really wanted to pick our brains. He doesn’t want to make the clichéd and predictable rock n roll mistakes so many others have made.

“And absolutely, he’s the best up and comer I have heard since the turn of the century. There’s a remarkably soulful and intelligent articulation to his playing -- for any age.

“Then a couple of years into the relationship Chris wheels Tom into the same bedroom and they do an acoustic version of ‘Simple Man’ -- and anyone would be floored with that vocal tone of Tom’s. Rob had been working with Tom on a college project so they had a solid basis for development. When they started to get attention we decided that it would only be right to offer to take a responsible role, and help out a little.”

Niven is convinced the future is bright for the three-piece but he stresses they must be given time to find their own sound and their own path.

He added: “Every musical entity has within it the character of being a journey, so there can be no exact vision of development – it is important to ‘let it grow’ as Clapton so exquisitely put it -- unforced and natural.

“Besides, the journey is more significant than the destination, which tends to be not what you think in any case. You can never tell who your audience will be and how deeply they will take you to heart. We only know we love Tom Hollister Trio and we will do whatever we can to further their career and where it goes is to be discovered -- and that will be the fun of it along with the pleasure of working with them and hearing what they come up with.

“TH3 are going to make some rocking’ bluesy soul music, ignited by some exceptional guitar playing and we want to be in the front row to hear it.”

Yeah there was a good cover of Mr Brownstone that Chris did but he seems to have taken that one down.  Presumably doesn't want to perpetuate the Slash comparison.

I really like the guitar stuff at the end of "Tied Up in Blue" and there's some cool playing in "Run" too.  The vocalists voice sounds great also for a guy so young, he's got quite a mature sound.

Scoring Chris Kimsey to be producer on your first record is a pretty big win for a relatively unknown group too.

I dare say Niven's apparent willingness to do interviews about the past (when he hasn't really before) may have more to do with promoting his current projects than really giving a shit about GNR and how things went down 20 odd years ago.

Love the mix of post-grunge vocals and UYI-era GN'R, blues-rock. Just love it.

Tied Up In Blue - good god 9

Have they got an album out yet?
