CLEVELAND, Ohio - McDonald's Inc., is hoping to give 50,000 more Americans a reason to say "I'm lovin' it."
The world's largest fast-food chain in terms of sales aims to hire 50,000 workers nationwide - including 1,000 crew members and restaurant managers here in Northeast Ohio.
McDonald's has been revamping its menu offerings, expanding its hours and offering free WiFi at most of its restaurants, but what the company most wants is to rebrand itself as a desirable place to work and pursue a career.
The company, which rung up nearly $24.1 billion worldwide in 2010, employs more than 650,000 people in its more than 14,000 U.S. restaurants.
It is launching a nationwide advertising and public relations campaign, including newspaper and radio ads, in advance of its national hiring day on April 19, including employee testimonials of "Why I love my McJob" at mcdonalds.com/careers.
On that day, job-seekers can apply at participating McDonald's locations or go online to www.mcdonaldsneo.com.
McDonald's is hiring because it and other fast-casual restaurants benefited from the recession as cash-strapped families trimmed their dining out budgets and traded down from other sit-down restaurants.
The company's new McCafe mochas and fruit smoothies, addition of healthier menu items, return of the McRib sandwich and popular Monopoly game helped it increase sales by 6 percent in 2010. As a result, not only did it win over more customers, but its regulars returned to eat there more often.
And the company expects to continue cashing in in 2011.
McDonald's Chief Executive Jim Skinner told investors the company plans to spend $2.5 billion this year opening 1,100 new restaurants and renovating existing locations.
Its hiring day is timed to beef up its staff as the company heads into its busy summer season.
"Our business is strong and our customers are responding positively to the variety of choices on our menu and the value and convenience we provide," said Joe Woods, McDonald's regional marketing manager.
The company says more than half of its franchisees, 75 percent of its restaurant managers and many of its corporate executives, including CEO Skinner and McDonald's USA President Jan Fields, started their careers behind the counter.
McDonald's, which is hiring for both seasonal and permanent, full- and part-time jobs, is touting its flexible hours, benefits packages, job training and growth opportunities as reasons to climb aboard. The company awards more than $140,000 a year in scholarships and offers advanced degrees at its Hamburger University in Oak Brook, Ill., and six international campuses.

One of the local radio shows mentioned this. They said McDOnalds are able to do this because they have a deal with the government to keep there current health care.
short term: 50k new jobs!
Long term; 700k with unaffordable health care?
I could not find a news source on here to support the radio claims.

If true, that's very disappointing. Wal-Mart is only able to get away with its very low wages and low promotion rate because so many of their employees qualify for public assistance with health care (Medicaid, plus they hire the elderly in high rates who come with Medicare, SS, and a host of other government benefits). If McDonald's is not in compliance with the same laws every other employer is, and given the wages their employees earn already, it's fair to say a lot of these jobs will still be people taking Medicaid or some other form of government insurance.

Yeah, and you can rest assured that these 50,000 jobs will just conviently come UNDER full-time employment in terms of hours.
Which also limits the access to benefits for employees, saves McDonald's money, yet they make more money because they are allowed to expand with their extensive roster of rotating part-time employees.
I know for a fact that Wal-Mart is starting to do that more and more and more so they can cheat long-time employees out of their pension.
Re: McDonald's to hire 50,000 people nationwide
I can remember when I was in high school, several friends of mine got jobs at McD's, their first, and although this is probably more of a comment of management, and not McD's themselves...
They used to punish the kids for coming up light at the end of the work day. So if the manager felt that they could've made more money that day, he'd dock their pay, and take cuts from it to make up the rest from each employee.
My first thought was - the manager is ripping off the McD's. BUT, because the kids were - kids, and the whole place was staffed with 16 year olds... there wasn't a damn thing they could do.
Heard the same story, different style, from several different employees. Immediately put a sour taste in my mouth towards McD's from that point forward.
Most people just quit after a couple of months.
