Racial hoax causes PR nightmare for McDonald's

An online hoax that falsely suggests McDonald's discriminates against African-American customers is causing a PR headache for the Golden Arches.
Over the weekend, the photograph above circulated widely on the internet. The image shows what looks like an official McDonald's notice in the window of a restaurant, telling customers that blacks will be charged $1.50 extra "as an insurance measure due in part to a recent string of robberies."
Many internet users retweeted the photo, using the words "Seriously McDonald's," to express their disapproval of the burger chain.
In response, McDonald's sent a tweet of its own on Saturday: "That pic is a senseless & ignorant hoax McD's values ALL our customers. Diversity runs deep in our culture on both sides of the counter."
But that clearly wasn't enough to clear things up, because Twitter users continued to send out the picture, with that same message of condemnation: "Seriously McDonald's." Indeed, so many people sent "Seriously McDonald's" Tweets that the phrase became a leading entry on Twitter's trend list.
That led to a second, blunter McTweet, on Sunday: "That Seriously McDonalds picture is a hoax."
The latest pushback effort seems to have helped keep the photo from spreading too much further--but there's no telling how many people out there still think the photo is for real.
This is hardly the only recent barrage of negative publicity for the burger behemoth--some of it more justified. McDonalds CEO Jim Skinner recently was forced to defend the company's renewed use of the Ronald McDonald mascot to appeal to children, after critics said the restaurant's fat-laden burgers and fries endanger kids' health.
It's not clear who created the hoax image. It appears to have first showed up on the popular 4chan message board, and it was posted last year on an anti-McDonald's blog.
But there's no doubt it's fake. As some Twitter users have pointed out, the toll-free number given at the bottom of the sign is actually the number for ... Kentucky Fried Chicken.

Yeah I don't really understand why people take shit like this so seriously.
It sounds cliche, but get a sense of humor.
No one can talk about minorities.
No one can talk about gays.
No one can talk about foreigners.
No one can talk about sick people.
No one can talk about Islam.
No one can talk about Jews.
But if your white, fat, American, and Christian - that's okay. That's funny.
I don't really, nor have I ever seen, why jokes can't be made that are totally classless and in poor taste AND offensive.
As long as it's funny - that's the important part. You either laugh at it or you don't.

Agreed.
That's pretty funny. What's even more funny is the amount of stupid people just looking for something to jump on that believed it. Had that come across my twitter feed, I would've immediately known it was a joke.
I saw a website recently that was a list of links from The Onion that people posted to facebook, and people's stupid reactions to them.
It was hilarious, but of course I can't find the link right now.

I agree with what you're saying, but there are some definite differences. This could have seriously hurt McDonalds business. I see it far more than just a joke. It's like the Tommy Hilfiger racist hoax that actually cost him a lot of business because a lot of black people boycotted his products because they truly believed that he said he didn't want black people to wear his clothes. I still hear people who repeat this nonsense.
And sometimes people can take name-calling a little too far, where it's not a playful joke.

I think if people are that stupid - fuck 'em. Fuck their business, fuck their opinions.
It might be very Axl and simplistic of me, but knee jerk assholes like that are what start the race wars and conflict to begin with, because they act and shoot before they ask any questions for clarification.
I have sympathy for McD's & Tommy, but if I was in the same spot, me kissing the ass of my "customers" is a day they can keep dreaming for.

No one is. Growing up as a poor white boy, McD's used to be one of the cheapest (and fattiest) places for a poor boy to eat like a king.
$3-4 bucks, and you had tons of food.
These days, it's like people demand apologies just for the sake of it, and people give them out just to move on. It bugs me no one stands up for a stance anymore.
