Unfortunately these things do happen though.  I had a friend who came down with an ear infection when she was a senior in high school.  The doctor prescribed medication that she was allergic to and she developed atypical pneumonia and went into the ICU.  She seemed to be getting better though, so they sent her home after a few weeks.  Unfortunately, she wasn't better.  She got extremely sick soon after she got home and had to take Life Star back to the hospital.  She died soon after.  It was awful.  The parents sued the balls off the doctors years later, but that's hardly a consolation from having your daughter taken away from you at such a young age.

Could be something similar here.  Maybe the dog was allergic to the medication it was given and had an unfortunate fatal reaction.
